Japanese for Offering Food: 'Would you like some ___?' and Encouraging Seconds
Learn to offer food in Japanese with 〜はいかがですか and 〜はどうですか, and to encourage a second helping politely using もう一ついかがですか and 遠慮しないでください.

When you are serving food rather than inviting someone to an event, Japanese uses different patterns. This lesson teaches you to offer a specific item with 〜はいかがですか or the more casual 〜はどうですか, and to encourage someone to take more with もう一ついかがですか or 遠慮しないでください. You will also learn the difference between offering and inviting, and how to respond when you are the guest.
By the end, you can…
- offer a specific food or drink politely using 〜はいかがですか。
- encourage someone to take a second helping with もう一ついかがですか。
- respond appropriately when someone offers me food or asks me to take more.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The core pattern is [item] は いかがですか。 Put the food or drink before は. means 'Would you like some coffee?' To encourage more, use もう一つ (another one) or おかわり (a refill/second serving): もう一ついかがですか。 These are offers, not invitations to an event.
When to use it
Use いかがですか with guests, elders, customers, or people you do not know well. Use どうですか with friends and family. When you are the guest and want to accept, say To decline politely, say If the host says , you can accept with じゃあ、遠慮なく。 (Well then, I won't hold back.)
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Would you like some tea?Ocha wa ikaga desu ka.
Yes, please.Hai, onegai shimasu.
Would you like a refill? Please don't hold back.Okawari wa ikaga desu ka. Enryo shinaide kudasai.
Well then, I won't hold back. Another one, please.Jā, enryo naku. Mō hitotsu onegai shimasu.A little context goes a long way
Offering food in Japanese often includes a soft insistence. show hospitality, but guests may politely decline once or twice before accepting. This is not dishonesty; it is a common polite exchange. Match your level of formality to the relationship and setting.
One thing to watch for
to offer food, as in ケーキに来ませんか。
invites someone to come to an event or place. for 'Would you like some cake?'
