Japanese for Elementary Learners: Talk About Your Study Routine

Learn to describe how you study in Japanese, including making flashcards, studying in the morning, and sharing study tips. Build elementary conversation skills for academic routines.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

In this lesson, you will learn how to talk about your study habits in Japanese. You will practice saying when you study, what tools you use, and how you prepare for tests. The focus is on academic routines, not hobbies. You will use simple sentence patterns with verbs like 勉強します (benkyou shimasu, to study) and 作ります (tsukurimasu, to make). By the end, you can hold a short conversation about study methods and give a basic tip. Pay attention to particles like を (o), で (de), and に (ni), which mark the object, location, and time of actions.

    By the end, you can…

    • say when I study, such as in the morning or at night.
    • describe study tools like flashcards and notebooks.
    • give a simple study tip to a friend.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    毎朝、勉強します。

    I study every morning.

    Maiasa, benkyou shimasu.

Use 毎朝 (maiasa) to mean 'every morning'. The verb 勉強します (benkyou shimasu) is a polite way to say 'study'.

    フラッシュカードを作ります。

    I make flashcards.

    Furasshu kaado o tsukurimasu.

フラッシュカード (furasshu kaado) is a loanword for 'flashcards'. The particle を (o) marks the object.

    朝は集中できます。

I can concentrate in the morning.

    Asa wa shuuchuu dekimasu.

朝 (asa) means 'morning'. 集中できます (shuuchuu dekimasu) means 'can concentrate'. Use は (wa) to contrast with other times.

    図書館で勉強するのが好きです。

I like studying at the library.

Toshokan de benkyou suru no ga suki desu.

図書館 (toshokan) means 'library'. The particle で (de) marks the location. のが好きです (no ga suki desu) expresses liking an activity.

    寝る前に復習します。

I review before going to bed.

    Neru mae ni fukushuu shimasu.

寝る前に (neru mae ni) means 'before sleeping'. 復習します (fukushuu shimasu) means 'review'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To say when you study, use a time word followed by に (ni) for specific clock times, or no particle for general times like 朝 (asa, morning) or 夜 (yoru, night). For example: 朝に勉強します (asa ni benkyou shimasu) is less natural; say 朝、勉強します (asa, benkyou shimasu). To say what you make, use [noun] を作ります ([noun] o tsukurimasu). Example: ノートを作ります (nooto o tsukurimasu, I make notes). To say where, use [place] で勉強します ([place] de benkyou shimasu). Example: カフェで勉強します (kafe de benkyou shimasu, I study at a cafe).

    When to use it

Use these patterns when talking about your daily or weekly study routine. For instance, if someone asks いつ勉強しますか (itsu benkyou shimasu ka, when do you study?), you can answer 夜、勉強します (yoru, benkyou shimasu, I study at night). If you want to share a tip, say 朝は集中できます (asa wa shuuchuu dekimasu, I can concentrate in the morning). To ask about someone's tools, say 何を作りますか (nani o tsukurimasu ka, what do you make?). These are polite forms, suitable for classmates or teachers.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    毎日、勉強しますか。

Do you study every day?Mainichi, benkyou shimasu ka.
    B

    はい、毎朝、勉強します。フラッシュカードを作ります。

Yes, I study every morning. I make flashcards.Hai, maiasa, benkyou shimasu. Furasshu kaado o tsukurimasu.
    A

    いいですね。どこで勉強しますか。

That's nice. Where do you study?Ii desu ne. Doko de benkyou shimasu ka.
    B

    図書館で勉強します。朝は集中できます。

I study at the library. I can concentrate in the morning.Toshokan de benkyou shimasu. Asa wa shuuchuu dekimasu.

A little context goes a long way

In Japanese schools and workplaces, study routines are often discussed politely, but boasting about long hours can be seen as immodest. It is common to share tips modestly, using phrases like よかったら (yokattara, if you like) when offering advice. Also, many students study in the morning before school or work, so mentioning 朝 (asa) is natural. Avoid saying 私は天才です (watashi wa tensai desu, I am a genius); instead, focus on effort.

    One thing to watch for

Using で (de) to mark time, as in 朝で勉強します (asa de benkyou shimasu).

Try this instead: For time, use に (ni) for specific times (e.g., 7時に, shichi-ji ni, at 7 o'clock) or no particle for general times (e.g., 朝、勉強します, asa, benkyou shimasu). で (de) marks location or means, as in 図書館で (toshokan de, at the library) or ペンで (pen de, with a pen).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'I study at night' in Japanese?

    Show a sample answer

    夜、勉強します。 (Yoru, benkyou shimasu.)

夜 (yoru) means 'night', and no particle is needed for general time. 勉強します (benkyou shimasu) is the polite verb. You could also say 夜に勉強します (yoru ni benkyou shimasu), but it is less common.

    2Translate: 'I make notes.'

    Show a sample answer

    ノートを作ります。 (Nooto o tsukurimasu.)

ノート (nooto) means 'notebook' or 'notes'. The particle を (o) marks the object, and 作ります (tsukurimasu) means 'make'. You can replace ノート with other study tools like カード (kaado, cards).

3What is a polite way to ask 'Where do you study?'

    Show a sample answer

どこで勉強しますか。 (Doko de benkyou shimasu ka.)

どこ (doko) means 'where', で (de) marks the location, and か (ka) makes it a question. This is polite and suitable for most conversations.

    Take this with you

Use time words like 朝 (asa) or 夜 (yoru) without particles, mark locations with で (de), and objects with を (o). Practice saying your own study routine to build fluency.
