Japanese for a Coin Laundry: Saying Your Bag Is Caught in the Door

Learn elementary Japanese to explain that a laundry bag is caught in the machine door, ask staff for help politely, and avoid forcing the door yourself.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

You are at a coin laundry, you close the machine door, and the drawstring of your laundry bag is caught in it. The door will not shut, so the cycle will not start. In this lesson you will learn five practical Japanese expressions for exactly this situation: 袋が挟まっています (the bag is caught), ドア (door), 閉まりません (it will not close), 引っ張ってみました (I tried pulling it), and 手伝ってもらえますか (could you help me?). You will also learn the pattern 〜が挟まっています for describing a stuck state, and polite wording for asking staff instead of forcing the door.

    By the end, you can…

    • describe that a bag or drawstring is caught in the machine door using 〜が挟まっています.
    • explain that the door will not close and that I already tried pulling it.
    • politely ask a staff member for help with 手伝ってもらえますか.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

The bag is caught (in the door).

    fukuro ga hasamatte imasu

Use this to describe the current stuck state. 袋 (fukuro) means bag; 挟まっています (hasamatte imasu) describes something pinched or caught between two things.

    The door will not close.

    doa ga shimarimasen

Say this when the door stays open or will not shut completely. 閉まりません is the polite negative form of 閉まります (shimarimasu), to close.

    I tried pulling it.

    hippatte mimashita

Use this to explain what you already tried. The 〜てみました pattern means 'I tried doing something.'

    Could you help me?

    tetsudatte moraemasu ka

A polite request for help. Use it with a staff member when you cannot solve the problem yourself.

Excuse me, could you take a look?

    sumimasen, chotto mite moraemasu ka

A soft way to get a staff member's attention and ask them to check the machine.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 〜が挟まっています describes a state: something is caught or pinched. For example, 袋が挟まっています (the bag is caught), ひもが挟まっています (the string is caught), or 服が挟まっています (clothing is caught). This is a state description, not an action you are doing. If you want to say what got caught, name the object before が. To ask a question, add か: 袋が挟まっていますか (is the bag caught?).

    When to use it

Use these phrases at the machine when the door will not close and the cycle will not start. First say すみません to get attention, then explain: 袋が挟まっています。 If the staff member asks what you did, say Do not force the door or try to repair the machine. Instead, ask staff to check it: ちょっと見てもらえますか。This keeps you and the machine safe.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Excuse me, the bag is caught. The door will not close.sumimasen, fukuro ga hasamatte imasu. doa ga shimarimasen.
    B

Where is it? Let me take a look.doko desu ka. mite mimasu ne.
    A

Here. I tried pulling it, but it still will not close.koko desu. hippatte mimashita ga, mada shimarimasen.
    B

I understand. I will help you. Please wait a moment.wakarimashita. tetsudaimasu yo. sukoshi matte kudasai.

A little context goes a long way

In Japan, staff at coin laundries are usually helpful, but they may not be on site at all hours. Keep your request short and polite, and avoid touching the machine roughly. If no staff member is present, look for a contact number or a notice on the wall and ask for assistance rather than forcing the door.

    One thing to watch for

(I will pull the door) as a request or explanation.

Try this instead: Use 引っ張ってみました to say what you already tried, and 手伝ってもらえますか to ask for help. Do not say you will force the door; ask staff instead.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'The bag is caught' in Japanese?

    Show a sample answer

This uses the pattern 〜が挟まっています to describe a stuck state. You could also say ひもが挟まっています if the drawstring is caught.

2The door will not close. What polite phrase explains this?

    Show a sample answer

閉まりません is the polite negative form of 閉まります. It clearly states that the door does not close.

3You already tried pulling the bag. How do you say that, and then ask for help?

    Show a sample answer

引っ張ってみました means 'I tried pulling it,' and 手伝ってもらえますか is a polite request for help. You can also add すみません at the start.

    Take this with you

If your bag is caught in the coin laundry door, say 袋が挟まっています and ドアが閉まりません, mention 引っ張ってみました, then politely ask 手伝ってもらえますか. Ask staff to check the machine instead of forcing the door.
