Japanese for Coin Laundries: Asking Whether Detergent Is Added Automatically

Learn to ask 洗剤は自動ですか and 持って来たほうがいいですか at an unfamiliar Japanese coin laundry, and to read 自動投入 on the machine panel.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

Walking into an unfamiliar coin laundry in Japan, the first practical question is often whether the machine adds detergent by itself. Some machines do, some do not, and the answer changes what you need to buy or carry. This lesson gives you neutral-polite Japanese for that exact moment: asking a member of staff whether detergent is automatic, asking whether you should bring your own, and reading the word 自動投入 on the control panel. You will also learn the difference between 洗剤 (detergent) and 柔軟剤 (fabric softener), because they are separate products and machines treat them separately. The patterns 〜は自動ですか and 〜を持って来たほうがいいですか are short, reusable, and polite enough for a first visit to any shop.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask whether detergent is added automatically at a coin laundry.
    • ask whether I should bring detergent or fabric softener myself.
    • recognise 自動投入 on a machine panel and understand what it means.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    すみません、洗剤は自動ですか。

Excuse me, is the detergent automatic?

    Su-mi-ma-sen, sen-zai wa ji-dō desu ka.

Your main question at the counter or to a staff member on the floor. 洗剤 means laundry detergent. Keep the rising question intonation on ですか.

    洗剤を持って来たほうがいいですか。

Should I bring detergent with me?

    Sen-zai o mot-te ki-ta hō ga ii desu ka.

Use this when you want a recommendation rather than a yes/no fact. 〜たほうがいいですか asks what would be better to do.

    柔軟剤も自動ですか。

Is the fabric softener automatic too?

    Jū-nan-zai mo ji-dō desu ka.

柔軟剤 is fabric softener, a separate product from 洗剤. The particle も means 'also', so this follows naturally after the first question.

    柔軟剤を持って来たほうがいいですか。

Should I bring fabric softener with me?

    Jū-nan-zai o mot-te ki-ta hō ga ii desu ka.

Same pattern as the detergent question, with 柔軟剤 swapped in. Useful because some machines add detergent automatically but not softener.

    投入口はどこですか。

Where is the slot for putting it in?

    Tō-nyū-guchi wa do-ko desu ka.

投入口 is the opening or slot where something is poured or inserted. Point at the machine while asking if the staff member is nearby.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 〜は自動ですか asks whether something happens by itself. Put the item before は: 洗剤は自動ですか (Is the detergent automatic?), 柔軟剤は自動ですか (Is the softener automatic?). To ask what you should do, use 〜を持って来たほうがいいですか, literally 'Is it better that I bring 〜?'. For example, 洗剤を持って来たほうがいいですか means 'Should I bring detergent?'. Both patterns are neutral-polite and safe with staff you have not met.

    When to use it

Use 洗剤は自動ですか when you are standing at the machine or asking at the counter and simply want to know how the machine works. Use 持って来たほうがいいですか when you are deciding whether to buy something at the shop or bring it from home next time. If the staff member points at the panel and says 自動投入, that means the machine dispenses the detergent itself. If you are unsure, ask 投入口はどこですか and let them show you the slot.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    すみません、洗剤は自動ですか。

Excuse me, is the detergent automatic?Su-mi-ma-sen, sen-zai wa ji-dō desu ka.
    B

    はい、自動投入です。洗剤は入れなくていいですよ。

Yes, it is automatic dispensing. You do not need to put detergent in.Hai, ji-dō tō-nyū desu. Sen-zai wa i-re-na-ku-te ii desu yo.
    A

    柔軟剤を持って来たほうがいいですか。

Should I bring fabric softener with me?Jū-nan-zai o mot-te ki-ta hō ga ii desu ka.
    B

    柔軟剤は自動じゃないので、持って来たほうがいいですよ。

The softener is not automatic, so it is better to bring it.Jū-nan-zai wa ji-dō ja nai no de, mot-te ki-ta hō ga ii desu yo.

A little context goes a long way

Neutral-polite forms such as です and ます are appropriate with shop staff you do not know. In a small coin laundry, staff may not be present at all, so the panel itself is often your main source of information. Reading 自動投入 tells you the machine handles detergent, but it does not tell you whether softener is included, so ask separately if that matters to you.

    One thing to watch for

Asking 洗剤は自動ですか when you actually mean 'Is there detergent here?'

Try this instead: 自動 asks about automatic operation, not availability. If you want to know whether detergent is provided at all, ask 洗剤はありますか (Is there detergent?). Use 洗剤は自動ですか only when you mean 'Does the machine add it automatically?'

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask a staff member whether the detergent is automatic?

    Show a sample answer

    すみません、洗剤は自動ですか。

This uses 〜は自動ですか with 洗剤 as the topic. Adding すみません first makes it polite and natural when approaching someone.

2You want a recommendation about bringing your own fabric softener. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    柔軟剤を持って来たほうがいいですか。

This uses 〜を持って来たほうがいいですか, which asks what would be better to do. 洗剤を持って来たほうがいいですか would also be correct if you meant detergent instead.

3You see 自動投入 on the panel. What does it tell you?

    Show a sample answer

It means the machine dispenses the detergent automatically, so you do not need to add your own for that part.

自動投入 refers to automatic dispensing of detergent. It does not by itself guarantee that softener is also automatic, so check separately if you need it.

    Take this with you

Ask 洗剤は自動ですか to find out how the machine works, 持って来たほうがいいですか to decide what to bring, and look for 自動投入 on the panel when no staff member is around.
