    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is Posso + infinitive: Posso tracciare questo pacco? (Can I track this package?). To ask about a specific parcel, use questo pacco (this package) or il mio pacco (my package). For a tracking number, ask Qual è il numero di tracciamento? and answer with È + number. To ask about location, use Dov'è + noun: Dov'è il mio pacco? Remember that pacco is masculine, so questo pacco and il mio pacco agree in masculine singular. Note that tracciare is spelled with -cci-: the double c is pronounced as a single 'ch' sound, not as two separate sounds.

    When to use it

Use Posso tracciare questo pacco? when you are holding the parcel or looking at an order page and want to know if tracking is available. Use Vorrei sapere lo stato della spedizione in a more formal email or phone call. If you are the customer, you can also say Ho un numero di tracciamento (I have a tracking number). In shops, a simple Posso tracciarlo? (Can I track it?) is natural when the object is already clear. Note that tracciarlo attaches the direct-object pronoun lo to the infinitive, giving the meaning 'to track it'.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Buongiorno, ho ricevuto un avviso ma il pacco non è arrivato. Posso tracciare questo pacco?

A little context goes a long way

In Italy, customer service often uses the formal Lei with unfamiliar customers, so Vorrei sapere... and Potrebbe controllare... sound appropriately polite. With friends or in informal messages, Posso tracciare il pacco? is fine. Regional usage varies: corriere is the usual word for a courier, while posta refers to the postal service; tracking pages may show English loanwords such as tracking alongside tracciamento.

    One thing to watch for

Using traccia instead of tracciare after posso, as in Posso traccia questo pacco?

Try this instead: After posso, use the infinitive: Posso tracciare questo pacco? The form traccia is the third-person singular present (lui/lei traccia), not the infinitive. Compare: Posso tracciare il pacco? (Can I track the package?) and Il corriere traccia il pacco (The courier tracks the package).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask "Can I track this package?" politely in Italian?

    Show a sample answer

    Posso tracciare questo pacco?

Posso + infinitive is the standard polite pattern. Posso tracciare il mio pacco? is also correct if the package is clearly yours.

2You need the tracking number. What do you ask?

    Show a sample answer

Qual è il numero di tracciamento?

Qual è is the standard way to ask "What is...?" before a singular noun. In informal contexts, Qual è il codice di tracking? is also understood.

3How do you say "Where is my package now?" in Italian?

    Show a sample answer

    Dov'è il mio pacco adesso?

Dov'è is the contraction of dove + è. Adesso means "now"; you can also say ora, which is slightly more formal in some regions.

    Take this with you

Use Posso tracciare questo pacco? to ask about tracking, Qual è il numero di tracciamento? to get the number, and Dov'è il mio pacco? to ask where it is. Keep posso followed by the infinitive tracciare.
