When you live in Italy or are staying somewhere for a while, one practical question comes up fast: has a package arrived for me? Italian uses the verb arrivare for packages, and the past tense is formed with essere plus the past participle arrivato. This lesson gives you the exact question forms, the vocabulary for ritiro (pickup), and the polite phrases you need at a portineria, an ufficio postale or a courier point. You will also learn how to ask where to collect the parcel and what identification is required.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask whether a package has arrived for me using è arrivato and the correct preposition.
    • ask where and when to pick up a parcel and what to bring.
    • understand and respond to common questions about a package at a pickup desk.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

È arrivato un pacco per me?

Has a package arrived for me?

eh ar-ree-VAH-toh oon PAHK-koh pehr meh

The standard neutral question. Un pacco is any parcel; use it at a portineria, hotel desk or courier point.

C'è un pacco a nome Rossi?

Is there a package under the name Rossi?

    cheh oon PAHK-koh ah NOH-meh ROS-see

Very common at pickup counters. A nome plus a surname means 'under the name of'. Replace Rossi with your own surname.

    Devo ritirare un pacco.

I need to pick up a package.

    DEH-voh ree-tee-RAH-reh oon PAHK-koh

Use ritirare for collecting something held for you. This is the key verb for pickup situations.

    Dove posso ritirarlo?

Where can I pick it up?

    DOH-veh POS-soh ree-tee-RAR-loh

The pronoun lo attaches to the infinitive ritirare, giving ritirarlo. Use it when the parcel has already been mentioned.

    Serve un documento?

    Is an ID document needed?

    SEHR-veh oon doh-koo-MEN-toh

A polite way to ask what to bring. A documento is usually an identity card or passport; a codice fiscale may also be requested.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

Italian marks the arrival of a parcel with arrivare, not with avere. The past tense is è arrivato for a masculine singular noun such as un pacco: È arrivato un pacco per me? If the item is feminine, the participle agrees: È arrivata una lettera? For plural items, use sono arrivati or sono arrivate: Sono arrivati due pacchi? The preposition per marks the beneficiary: per me, per lei, per Mario. To ask about a name on the label, use a nome: C'è un pacco a nome Bianchi?

    When to use it

Use È arrivato un pacco per me? when you do not know whether the parcel is there yet. Use C'è un pacco a nome... when you expect it to be held and want the clerk to check. At a portineria, the concierge may say È arrivato, lo tengo qui, meaning it is here and being held. If you are collecting, say Devo ritirare un pacco and then ask Dove posso ritirarlo? For a courier point, you may hear è in giacenza, meaning it is being held for collection. Ask Da quanto è in giacenza? to find out how long it has been waiting.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Buongiorno, è arrivato un pacco per me? Mi chiamo Laura Conti.

Good morning, has a package arrived for me? My name is Laura Conti.bwon-JOR-noh, eh ar-ree-VAH-toh oon PAHK-koh pehr meh? mee KYAH-moh LOW-rah KON-tee
    B

Un attimo, controllo. Sì, c'è un pacco a nome Conti.

One moment, let me check. Yes, there is a package under the name Conti.oon AT-tee-moh, kon-TROL-loh. see, cheh oon PAHK-koh ah NOH-meh KON-tee
    A

Perfetto. Devo ritirarlo qui o devo andare altrove?

Perfect. Do I need to pick it up here, or do I need to go elsewhere?pehr-FET-toh. DEH-voh ree-tee-RAR-loh kwee oh DEH-voh an-DAH-reh al-TROH-veh
    B

Qui, però serve un documento. Ha la carta d'identità?

Here, but an ID document is needed. Do you have your identity card?kwee, peh-ROH SEHR-veh oon doh-koo-MEN-toh. ah lah KAR-tah dee-den-tee-TAH

A little context goes a long way

In Italy, many residential buildings have a portineria where the portiere or portiera receives parcels. In smaller buildings, couriers may leave a notice and hold the parcel at a local fermo posta or courier depot. Address staff with lei unless you know them well: Ha un pacco per me? is polite; Hai un pacco per me? is informal and used with friends or family. At post offices, ritiro and giacenza are standard terms for pickup and holding.

    One thing to watch for

Ho arrivato un pacco per me?

Try this instead: Arrivare takes essere, not avere, and the subject is the parcel, not you. Say È arrivato un pacco per me? If you want to say you received it, use Ho ricevuto un pacco, which uses avere because ricevere is transitive.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask whether a package has arrived for you, using the standard neutral question?

    Show a sample answer

È arrivato un pacco per me?

This uses arrivare with essere and the masculine singular participle arrivato, plus per me for the beneficiary. You could also say C'è un pacco per me? in a more casual register.

2You are at a pickup counter and the clerk asks for identification. How do you ask whether a document is needed?

    Show a sample answer

    Serve un documento?

Serve means 'is needed' and works with a singular noun. You may also hear Ci vuole un documento? Both are correct; serve is slightly more formal and common at counters.

3How do you ask where you can pick up the parcel, attaching the pronoun to the verb?

    Show a sample answer

    Dove posso ritirarlo?

The object pronoun lo attaches to the infinitive ritirare, forming ritirarlo. You could also say Dove lo posso ritirare? with the pronoun before the verb; both are standard.

    Take this with you

Use arrivare with essere for parcels: È arrivato un pacco per me? Then use ritirare for pickup and ask Serve un documento? before you go.
