In this lesson you will learn to talk about hobbies in Italian in a way that sounds natural and enthusiastic, not like a dry list. You will use the phrase mi piace (I like) and the stronger mi interessa (I'm interested in), add frequency words like spesso (often) and ogni giorno (every day), and ask follow-up questions with ti piace...? (do you like...?) and quanto spesso...? (how often...?). Italian uses the verb piacere differently from English: the thing you like is the subject, so you say mi piace la fotografia (photography is pleasing to me). You will also learn to use giocare a (to play a sport or game) and suonare (to play an instrument). By the end, you will be able to keep a short, lively conversation going about free-time activities.

In Italian conversation, enthusiasm is often expressed with tone and simple words like che bello! (how nice!) or davvero? (really?). Mi piace is neutral and safe; mi interessa can sound slightly more formal or thoughtful. Individual speakers vary in how they use these, so treat any regional tendency as a loose tendency rather than a rule. Regional words for 'game' or 'play' exist in dialect, but standard Italian giocare a is understood everywhere.
One thing to watch for
Saying Io sono dentro la fotografia to mean 'I'm into photography'.
Try this instead: Do not translate 'into' literally. Use mi piace la fotografia or mi interessa la fotografia. Example: Mi interessa molto la fotografia (I'm very into photography).
