Italian for Choirs: Asking to Sing the Lower Harmony Part

Learn to ask in Italian which voice sings the lower harmony and whether you can try it, using voce bassa, armonia, contralto and provare in a real choir rehearsal.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

When you join an amateur choir in Italy, the first practical question is often about parts: who sings the lower harmony, and can you try it? This lesson gives you neutral, reusable Italian for that exact moment. You will ask which voice covers the lower line, check whether the part is open, and request a short trial. The focus is on four useful words: voce bassa (low voice), armonia (harmony), contralto (contralto part) and provare (to try). Choir arrangements vary, so you will also learn how to ask rather than assume.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask which voice part sings the lower harmony in Italian.
    • ask whether I may try singing the lower part in a rehearsal.
    • understand and use voce bassa, armonia, contralto and provare in short choir questions.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Qual è la voce che canta l'armonia più bassa?

Which voice is it that sings the lower harmony?

    kwal eh la VOH-cheh keh KAN-tah lar-moh-NEE-ah pyoo BAH-sah

Neutral question for a choir director or a singer. Use più bassa when you mean the lower of two or more harmony lines.

La parte bassa la cantano i bassi o i contralti?

Is the lower part sung by the basses or the contraltos?

    lah PAR-teh BAH-sah lah KAN-tah-noh ee BAH-see oh ee kon-TRAL-tee

Useful when the choir uses standard four-part names. The repeated la parte bassa is natural spoken Italian.

Posso provare a cantare la voce bassa?

Can I try singing the lower voice part?

    POS-soh proh-VAH-reh ah kan-TAH-reh lah VOH-cheh BAH-sah

Polite and direct. Posso plus the infinitive is the standard way to ask permission.

Mi piacerebbe provare l'armonia, se c'è posto.

I would like to try the harmony, if there is room.

    mee pyah-cheh-REB-beh proh-VAH-reh lar-moh-NEE-ah seh cheh POS-toh

Softer request for a first rehearsal. Se c'è posto checks availability without asking about policy.

Per la voce bassa, devo cantare all'ottava o nella stessa ottava?

For the lower part, should I sing at the octave or in the same octave?

    pehr lah VOH-cheh BAH-sah DEH-voh kan-TAH-reh al-lot-TAH-vah oh NEL-lah STES-sah ot-TAH-vah

Ask this if the director mentions octave placement. It shows you are listening to the arrangement, not assuming.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The key pattern is Posso provare a cantare...? (Can I try singing...?). Posso is the first-person form of potere and works for permission in neutral situations. Add a specific part: Posso provare a cantare la voce bassa? or Posso provare il contralto? If you want to sound slightly softer, use Mi piacerebbe provare... (I would like to try...). To ask which part sings the lower harmony, use Qual è la voce che canta l'armonia più bassa? The word voce can mean both the human voice and a voice part, so context makes it clear.

    When to use it

Use these questions at the start of a rehearsal or after a piece is introduced. If the choir uses SATB labels, ask La parte bassa la cantano i bassi o i contralti? If the group uses informal part names, ask Chi canta l'armonia più bassa? (Who sings the lower harmony?). When you are offered a trial, you can answer Volentieri, provo subito (Gladly, I'll try right away). Avoid assuming that contralto always means the same range in every choir; in some amateur groups it is simply the lower female part, and in others it overlaps with male alto or tenor writing.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Scusi, qual è la voce che canta l'armonia più bassa?

Excuse me, which voice is it that sings the lower harmony?SKOO-zee kwal eh lah VOH-cheh keh KAN-tah lar-moh-NEE-ah pyoo BAH-sah
    B

Di solito la canta il gruppo dei contralti, ma dipende dal brano.

Usually the contralto group sings it, but it depends on the piece.dee SOH-lee-toh lah KAN-tah eel GROOP-poh dehy kon-TRAL-tee mah dee-PEN-deh dal BRAH-noh
    A

Posso provare a cantare la voce bassa con loro?

    Can I try singing the lower part with them?POS-soh proh-VAH-reh ah kan-TAH-reh lah VOH-cheh BAH-sah kon LOH-roh
    B

Certo, mettiti qui accanto a me e seguiamo l'armonia insieme.

Of course, stand here next to me and we'll follow the harmony together.CHER-toh met-TEE-tee kwee ak-KAN-toh ah meh eh seh-GWEE-ah-moh lar-moh-NEE-ah in-SYEH-meh

A little context goes a long way

Italian choirs often use informal part names in rehearsal, and a director may switch between voce, parte and armonia. Contralto is common in amateur groups, but the exact range and role vary by arrangement. Asking Posso provare? is neutral and polite; adding se c'è posto makes it easier for the director to say no without awkwardness.

    One thing to watch for

Saying Posso provo cantare la voce bassa? by mixing posso with a conjugated verb.

Try this instead: Use posso plus the infinitive: Posso provare a cantare la voce bassa? If you prefer a full sentence with provare, say Provo a cantare la voce bassa (I'll try to sing the lower part). Do not put provo directly after posso.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask whether you can try the lower voice part, using posso?

    Show a sample answer

Posso provare a cantare la voce bassa?

Posso plus provare a cantare is the standard permission pattern. Posso provare la voce bassa? is also acceptable and slightly shorter.

2Which Italian question asks whether the basses or the contraltos sing the lower part?

    Show a sample answer

La parte bassa la cantano i bassi o i contralti?

This uses the part name and the two likely voice groups. You could also ask Chi canta la parte bassa? if you do not know the group names.

3What does contralto usually refer to in an amateur Italian choir?

    Show a sample answer

It usually refers to the lower female voice part, though the exact range depends on the choir and the arrangement.

The term is common, but arrangements vary. Asking the director is better than assuming a fixed range.

    Take this with you

Ask Qual è la voce che canta l'armonia più bassa? and then Posso provare a cantare la voce bassa? Keep the request simple, and let the director confirm whether the part is called contralto, basso or something else in that choir.
