Italian for Choir Singers: Asking a Fellow Member for a Rehearsal Recording

Learn friendly Italian phrases to ask a choir mate for a recording of a rehearsal you missed, and to check which voice parts it covers.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

If you sing in an Italian amateur choir and miss a rehearsal, the fastest fix is often a message to a fellow chorister asking for the recording they made on a phone. This lesson gives you natural, polite Italian for that exact situation: saying you were absent, requesting the file, and checking which voice parts (soprani, contralti, tenori, bassi) are actually audible on it. You will practise the verbs mancare, mandare and the noun registrazione, and learn how to ask questions that get a clear, useful answer without sounding demanding.

    By the end, you can…

    • say that I missed a rehearsal and explain why in simple Italian
    • politely ask a choir mate to send me a recording
    • ask which voice parts are covered in the recording
    • respond when someone offers to share a file in a different way

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Ciao, purtroppo ieri sera sono mancato alla prova.

Hi, unfortunately I missed last night's rehearsal.

    CHOW, poor-TROP-poh ee-EH-ree SEH-rah SO-noh man-KAH-toh al-lah PROH-vah

mancare is used with essere; a woman says mancata. Add a reason: ...perché lavoravo fino a tardi.

    Qualcuno ha registrato la prova?

    Did anyone record the rehearsal?

    kwal-KOO-noh ah reh-jee-STRAH-toh lah PROH-vah

Neutral question you can post in a choir group chat before asking anyone privately.

Mi mandi la registrazione, per favore?

Could you send me the recording, please?

    mee MAN-dee lah reh-jee-stra-TSYOH-neh, per fah-VOH-reh

Informal tu form, suitable for a choir mate you know. Use mi manda with someone you address formally.

Nella registrazione si sentono anche i contralti?

Can you hear the altos in the recording too?

    NEL-lah reh-jee-stra-TSYOH-neh see SEN-toh-noh AN-keh ee kon-TRAL-tee

Swap in soprani, tenori or bassi depending on your part. si sentono means 'are audible'.

    Grazie mille, sei gentilissimo!

Thanks a lot, you're very kind!

    GRAT-tsyeh MEL-leh, say jen-tee-LEES-see-moh

A woman says gentilissima to a woman, or gentilissimi to several people. Warm and common in choir chats.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core request pattern is mi mandi + object + per favore: Mi mandi la registrazione, per favore? ('Could you send me the recording, please?'). You can replace the object: Mi mandi il file? ('the file'), Mi mandi il link? ('the link'). To ask about content, use si sente / si sentono: Si sente il pianoforte? ('Can you hear the piano?'), Si sentono i bassi? ('Can you hear the basses?'). This impersonal si is the natural way to talk about what is audible on a recording.

    When to use it

Use the informal tu forms with a choir mate you chat with regularly; in a formal choir context or with a conductor, switch to Mi manda la registrazione, per favore? and La ringrazio. If you only need part of the rehearsal, be specific: Mi serve solo la parte dei tenori ('I only need the tenors' part'). If you are not sure a recording exists, ask first: Avete registrato la prova di martedì? ('Did you record Tuesday's rehearsal?') before making a direct request.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Ciao Marco, purtroppo ieri sera sono mancata alla prova. Qualcuno ha registrato?

    Hi Marco, unfortunately I missed last night's rehearsal. Did anyone record it?CHOW MAR-koh, poor-TROP-poh ee-EH-ree SEH-rah SO-noh man-KAH-tah al-lah PROH-vah. kwal-KOO-noh ah reh-jee-STRAH-toh

Grazie! Nella registrazione si sentono anche i soprani?

Thanks! Can you hear the sopranos in the recording too?GRAT-tsyeh. NEL-lah reh-jee-stra-TSYOH-neh see SEN-toh-noh AN-keh ee soh-PRAH-nee
    B

I soprani sì, i bassi un po' meno. Se vuoi ti mando anche le mie note.

The sopranos yes, the basses a bit less. If you want, I'll send you my notes too.ee soh-PRAH-nee see, ee BAS-see oon poh MEH-noh. seh VWOH-ee tee MAN-doh AN-keh leh MEE-eh NOH-teh

A little context goes a long way

In Italian amateur choirs, sharing phone recordings and notes in a WhatsApp group is common and informal, and a quick Grazie mille! is expected. Address individual singers with tu once you know them, but keep Lei with a conductor or a choir officer you have not met. Regional usage varies: in the north, people often say mandami rather than mi mandi, and in the south you may hear mandamela ('send it to me') as one word.

    One thing to watch for

Using mancare as a transitive verb: Ho mancato la prova.

Try this instead: In this meaning mancare is intransitive and takes essere: Sono mancato alla prova or Sono mancata alla prova. Use ho mancato only in other senses, such as Ho mancato il bersaglio ('I missed the target').

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'I missed the rehearsal' if you are a woman?

    Show a sample answer

    Sono mancata alla prova.

mancare takes essere and the past participle agrees with the subject; a man says Sono mancato alla prova. Both are correct in context.

2Ask a choir mate informally to send you the recording, with 'please'.

    Show a sample answer

Mi mandi la registrazione, per favore?

This uses the informal tu imperative with the indirect pronoun mi. Mi manda la registrazione, per favore? is equally correct with a formal Lei.

3Ask whether the tenors can be heard on the recording.

    Show a sample answer

Nella registrazione si sentono i tenori?

The impersonal si sentono with a plural noun asks what is audible. Si sente il tenore? would ask about one tenor voice.

    Take this with you

To get a missed rehearsal recording in Italian, say Sono mancato/a alla prova, ask Qualcuno ha registrato?, then request it with Mi mandi la registrazione, per favore? and check the content with Si sentono i tenori? Keep it friendly and thank them warmly.
