Italian for the Sewing Shop: Asking for a Zipper by Length and Type
Learn to ask for a zipper in Italian by length and type (separabile or non separabile), and describe the garment you are repairing.

In a small Italian merceria, you often need to ask for a zipper by length and by type. The staff will understand if you say una cerniera, but to get the right one you should specify the length in centimetres and whether it needs to be open-ended (separabile) or closed-end (non separabile). This lesson gives you the exact phrases to request what you need, describe the garment, and ask if the length can be adjusted. You will also learn how to respond if the shop assistant offers an alternative.
By the end, you can…
- ask for a zipper of a specific length in centimetres.
- distinguish between a separabile and a non separabile zipper.
- describe the garment I am repairing (giacca, gonna, pantaloni).
- ask if the length can be adjusted.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

I would like a twenty-centimetre zipper, please.

Polite and standard. Use vorrei rather than voglio. The length follows di + number + centimetri.
La cerniera deve essere separabile.
The zipper needs to be open-ended.
la cher-NYEH-ra DEH-veh ES-seh-reh seh-pa-RAH-bee-leh
Separabile means the two sides can be completely separated, as on a jacket. For a closed-end zipper, say non separabile.
È per una giacca.
It's for a jacket.
eh per OO-na JAHK-kah
Use per una giacca for a jacket, per una gonna for a skirt, per un paio di pantaloni for a pair of trousers.
Si può accorciare la cerniera?
Can the zipper be shortened?
see pwo ak-kor-CHAH-reh la cher-NYEH-ra
Ask this if the shop only has a longer zipper. The answer may be sì, si può or no, non si può.
Avete una cerniera non separabile?
Do you have a closed-end zipper?
ah-VEH-teh OO-na cher-NYEH-ra non seh-pa-RAH-bee-leh
Use Avete (you plural) in shops. This asks for a zipper that does not separate, common for skirts or trousers.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
To ask for a zipper by length, use: Vorrei una cerniera di + number + centimetri. For example, Vorrei una cerniera di venti centimetri. To specify the type, add separabile or non separabile: Vorrei una cerniera separabile di venti centimetri. If you need it for a specific garment, add per + article + garment: per una giacca, per una gonna, per un paio di pantaloni. You can also ask Avete una cerniera da venti centimetri? The preposition da is common in shops when giving a size or measure.
When to use it
Use these phrases in a merceria or a sewing shop when you need to replace a zipper. Start with Vorrei... or Avete... to be polite. If the assistant shows you a zipper that is too long, ask Si può accorciare? If you need an open-ended zipper for a jacket, say separabile. For a skirt or trousers, say non separabile. If you are not sure, describe the garment: È per una giacca. The assistant may then ask: Separabile o no? You can answer: Separabile, grazie. Remember that in Italian the adjective usually follows the noun: cerniera separabile, not separabile cerniera.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Buongiorno, vorrei una cerniera di venti centimetri.
Good morning, I would like a twenty-centimetre zipper.bwon-JOR-no, vor-RAY oo-na cher-NYEH-ra dee VEN-tee cheh-TEE-meh-treeCerto. La vuole separabile o non separabile?

In small Italian mercerie, staff are usually helpful and may offer alternatives if the exact length or type is not in stock. It is normal to ask for advice. Use Lei (third person singular) with the shop assistant unless you are a regular customer and they invite tu. The word cerniera is standard; in some regions you may hear chiusura lampo, but cerniera is understood everywhere. Do not assume a shop can shorten a zipper; ask politely with Si può accorciare?
One thing to watch for
Using separabile after the noun incorrectly, or confusing separabile with non separabile.
Try this instead: In Italian, the adjective normally follows the noun: una cerniera separabile. Separabile means the two sides can be completely separated (for a jacket). Non separabile means the zipper does not separate (for a skirt or trousers). For example: Per una giacca: una cerniera separabile. Per una gonna: una cerniera non separabile.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you ask for a fifteen-centimetre zipper?
Show a sample answer
Vorrei una cerniera di quindici centimetri.
This uses the polite vorrei and the pattern di + number + centimetri. You could also say Avete una cerniera da quindici centimetri? Both are correct.
2You need a zipper for a skirt. Which type do you ask for?
Show a sample answer
Una cerniera non separabile.
A skirt typically uses a closed-end zipper, so non separabile is correct. If the skirt has a separating zipper, you would ask for separabile, but that is less common.
3How do you ask if the zipper can be shortened?
Show a sample answer
Si può accorciare?
This is a polite way to ask if shortening is possible. You can also say Si può accorciare la cerniera? The answer may be sì or no.
In a merceria, ask for una cerniera di + number + centimetri, then specify separabile or non separabile. Describe the garment with per una giacca, per una gonna, or per un paio di pantaloni. If needed, ask Si può accorciare? Keep it polite with vorrei or avete.
