Italian for the Merceria: Asking for Elastic by Width and Use

Learn beginner Italian to ask for elastico in a merceria, specify width in centimetres, say how many metres you need, and answer staff questions about use and colour.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

In a merceria (a small haberdashery shop selling thread, buttons, ribbons and notions), elastic is usually sold by the metre from a roll, and the assistant will need to know two things: how wide you want it and what you are making. This lesson gives you the exact Italian to say 'largo due centimetri' (two centimetres wide), to ask for a length with 'ne avrei bisogno di due metri' (I would need two metres of it), and to check whether something is elastic with 'è elastico?'. You will also practise the questions staff commonly ask back, so the exchange stays short, polite and clear. Register is informal but respectful, the normal tone in a merceria.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask for elastic and state its width in centimetres.
    • say how many metres I need using ne avrei bisogno di...
    • explain what I am making with per un paio di pantaloni or per una gonna.
    • understand and answer a staff question about use and colour.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    Scusi, avete dell'elastico?

Excuse me, do you have any elastic?

    SKOO-zee, ah-VEH-teh del-leh-LAH-stee-koh

Opening question at the counter. Scusi is the polite 'excuse me' with a stranger; avete is 'you (plural) have', standard for a shop.

Ne avrei bisogno di due metri.

I would need two metres of it.

    neh ah-VREH-ee bee-ZOH-nyoh dee DOO-eh MEH-tree

Ne replaces 'of it' and must be there. Avrei bisogno di is a soft, polite way to state a need; due metri means two metres.

    Lo vorrei largo due centimetri.

I would like it two centimetres wide.

    loh vor-REH-ee LAR-goh DOO-eh chehn-tee-MEH-tree

Lo refers to elastico (masculine). Largo agrees with it. Change the number for other widths: largo un centimetro, largo tre centimetri.

    È elastico?

    Is it elastic?

    eh eh-LAH-stee-koh

Useful when a ribbon or trim looks stretchy but you are not sure. The answer may be Sì, è elastico or No, non è elastico.

Mi serve per un paio di pantaloni.

I need it for a pair of trousers.

    mee SEHR-veh pehr oon PAH-yoh dee pahn-tah-LOH-nee

Mi serve means 'I need it'. Per introduces the purpose. Alternatives: per una gonna (for a skirt), per una fascia (for a headband).

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is volere or avere bisogno di plus a width and a length. Say Lo vorrei largo due centimetri (I would like it two centimetres wide) and then Ne avrei bisogno di due metri (I would need two metres of it). Note two grammar points: largo changes ending to match the noun, so la fascia elastica would take larga; and ne is obligatory when you mean 'of it', as in Ne prendo un metro (I'll take one metre of it). For a narrower or wider roll, just swap the number: largo un centimetro, largo tre centimetri.

    When to use it

Use these lines when the elastic is behind the counter rather than on open display. Start with Scusi, avete dell'elastico? Then give the use before the measurement if you want the assistant to suggest a type: Mi serve per una gonna; ne avrei bisogno di due metri. If you are unsure, ask È elastico? or Questo è morbido? (Is this soft?). In many mercerie the assistant will ask A cosa le serve? (What do you need it for?) or Di che colore? (What colour?), so be ready to answer briefly with per un paio di pantaloni or preferisco il nero (I prefer black).

    Width, length and purpose

Keep the three pieces of information separate in your mind: width (largo due centimetri), length (due metri), purpose (per un paio di pantaloni). Italian word order is flexible, but a natural request is: Vorrei dell'elastico largo due centimetri per un paio di pantaloni; ne avrei bisogno di due metri. If you only need a short piece, say un pezzo da trenta centimetri (a thirty-centimetre piece). For a wider waistband elastic, largo quattro centimetri is common in shops, but ask what they have rather than assuming stock.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    Buongiorno, scusi. Avete dell'elastico?

Good morning, excuse me. Do you have any elastic?bwon-JOR-noh, SKOO-zee. ah-VEH-teh del-leh-LAH-stee-koh
    B

Sì, certo. A cosa le serve?

Yes, of course. What do you need it for?see, CHEHR-toh. ah KOH-zah leh SEHR-veh
    A

Mi serve per un paio di pantaloni. Lo vorrei largo due centimetri e ne avrei bisogno di due metri.

I need it for a pair of trousers. I would like it two centimetres wide, and I would need two metres of it.mee SEHR-veh pehr oon PAH-yoh dee pahn-tah-LOH-nee. loh vor-REH-ee LAR-goh DOO-eh chehn-tee-MEH-tree eh neh ah-VREH-ee bee-ZOH-nyoh dee DOO-eh MEH-tree
    B

Va bene. Di che colore lo preferisce?

All right. What colour would you prefer?vah BEH-neh. dee keh koh-LOH-reh loh preh-feh-REE-sheh

A little context goes a long way

In a merceria, Scusi is the normal polite opener and voi forms such as avete are standard for shop staff. Lei forms may appear in larger shops, so you may hear A cosa le serve? with the polite indirect pronoun le. Small mercerie often sell elastic by the metre from a roll and may ask about use to recommend the right type; availability, colours and any cutting or minimum-length rules vary by shop, so ask rather than assume.

    One thing to watch for

Saying Vorrei elastico due centimetri metri, dropping largo and ne, and mixing width with length.

Try this instead: Separate the two measurements and use the right structures: Lo vorrei largo due centimetri (width) and Ne avrei bisogno di due metri (length). Ne is required because you are asking for 'of it', and largo agrees with elastico.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask for two metres of elastic politely, using ne?

    Show a sample answer

Ne avrei bisogno di due metri.

Ne means 'of it' and avrei bisogno di is a polite way to say 'I would need'. Ne prendo due metri is also correct and slightly more direct.

2You want elastic two centimetres wide for a skirt. Say it in one sentence.

    Show a sample answer

Vorrei dell'elastico largo due centimetri per una gonna.

Largo agrees with elastico and per una gonna states the purpose. Mi serve per una gonna is a valid alternative opening.

3The assistant asks Di che colore lo preferisce? Give a short answer.

    Show a sample answer

    Preferisco il nero, grazie.

Preferisco plus the colour works for any colour. Lo preferisco nero is also correct; both answer the question directly.

    Take this with you

Ask with Scusi, avete dell'elastico?, give width as largo due centimetri, length as ne avrei bisogno di due metri, and purpose as per un paio di pantaloni. Keep width and length separate, and use ne whenever you mean 'of it'.
