Italian for the Copy Shop: Asking for a Scan of a Faded Receipt
Learn polite Italian phrases to ask a copisteria to scan a faded receipt, request more contrast or grayscale, and explain it is for an expense report.

At a copy shop (copisteria) in Italy, a faded receipt (scontrino sbiadito) often needs more than a simple photocopy: you need a scan (scansione) with better contrast (più contrasto) or in grayscale (scala di grigi). This lesson gives you polite, reusable Italian for explaining the problem, asking staff to improve the image, and saying what the file is for. You will practise questions such as 'Si legge poco, può migliorarlo?' and 'Serve per una nota spese', and you will learn the key nouns scansione, PDF and risoluzione so you can follow the assistant's reply. The register is polite and explanatory, suitable for a quick, practical exchange at the counter.
By the end, you can…
- ask a copy shop assistant to scan a faded receipt and explain that it is hard to read.
- request a higher-contrast or grayscale scan and say what file format I need.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Buongiorno, avrei bisogno di una scansione di questo scontrino.
Good morning, I would need a scan of this receipt.

Polite opening at the counter. 'Avrei bisogno di' is softer than 'voglio' and works in most shops.
Si legge poco, può migliorarlo?
It is hard to read, can you improve it?
see LED-jeh PO-ko, pwoh mee-lyo-RAR-lo
Use this when the text is faint. 'Può' is the polite third-person form; 'migliorarlo' means 'improve it'.
Potrebbe farlo con più contrasto?
Could you do it with more contrast?
po-TREB-beh FAR-lo kon pyoo kon-TRA-sto
'Potrebbe' is very polite. Use it to request a setting rather than a simple command.
Va bene anche in scala di grigi.
Grayscale is fine too.
va BWE-neh AN-keh een SKA-la dee GREE-jee
Useful when colour is not needed. 'Anche' means 'also/too' and makes the request flexible.
Serve per una nota spese.
It is for an expense report.
SER-veh per OO-na NO-ta SPE-zeh
Explains the purpose. 'Nota spese' is the common Italian term for an expense claim or report.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The polite request pattern 'Potrebbe + infinitive?' means 'Could you...?'. Examples: 'Potrebbe scannerizzarlo di nuovo?' (Could you scan it again?), 'Potrebbe aumentare il contrasto?' (Could you increase the contrast?), 'Potrebbe inviarmelo in PDF?' (Could you send it to me as a PDF?). This structure is safe with staff you do not know and avoids the blunt imperative.
When to use it
Use 'Si legge poco' before asking for a change, so the assistant understands the problem. Then add a specific request: 'può migliorarlo?' or 'potrebbe farlo con più contrasto?'. If you only need a readable copy, say 'Va bene anche in scala di grigi'. If the file is for work, add 'Serve per una nota spese' so the assistant knows why quality matters.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

In Italy, 'copisteria' is the usual word for a copy and print shop; 'centro copie' also appears. Staff are generally addressed with 'lei' (the polite 'you') on a first visit. Asking about contrast, grayscale or resolution is a normal technical request, not a complaint. Avoid assuming a specific price, turnaround or file policy; ask 'Quanto costa?' or 'Quando è pronto?' if you need details.
One thing to watch for
Using the blunt imperative 'Miglioralo' or 'Fallo con più contrasto' with a shop assistant.
Try this instead: Use the polite request form instead: 'Può migliorarlo?' or 'Potrebbe farlo con più contrasto?'. The imperative can sound rude in this context. For example, say 'Potrebbe aumentare il contrasto, per favore?' rather than 'Aumenta il contrasto'.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you politely ask a copy shop assistant to improve a receipt that is hard to read?
Show a sample answer
Si legge poco, può migliorarlo?
This combines the problem ('Si legge poco') with a polite request ('può migliorarlo?'). 'Potrebbe migliorarlo?' is also correct and slightly more formal.
2You need the scan in grayscale because colour is not necessary. What can you say?
Show a sample answer
Va bene anche in scala di grigi.
'Va bene anche' means 'is fine too' and presents grayscale as an acceptable option. 'Può farlo in scala di grigi?' is another valid way to ask.
3How do you explain that the scan is for an expense report?
Show a sample answer
Serve per una nota spese.
'Serve per' means 'it is for'. 'Nota spese' is the standard term for an expense claim. You could also say 'Mi serve per la nota spese' for extra clarity.
At the copisteria, state the problem first ('Si legge poco'), then make one polite request ('Può migliorarlo?' / 'Potrebbe farlo con più contrasto?'), and mention the purpose ('Serve per una nota spese') so the assistant knows what quality you need.
