Italian for the Copy Shop: Explaining Mixed Landscape and Portrait Pages in a PDF
Learn elementary Italian to tell copy shop staff that some PDF pages are landscape and others portrait, ask them to rotate pages, and check margins before printing.

At a copy shop in Italy, the person at the counter often asks how you want your PDF printed. If your file mixes landscape (orizzontale) and portrait (verticale) pages, you need to explain which pages are rotated and what you want changed. This lesson gives you short, reusable Italian sentences for that conversation. You will learn to say that some pages are rotated, ask staff to fix them, and say that you want everything readable. You will also practise understanding common staff questions about rotation and margins. The register is collaborative and slightly technical: polite but practical, the way customers and print shop workers speak when a deadline is close.
By the end, you can…
- say that some pages in a PDF are landscape and others are portrait.
- ask copy shop staff to rotate specific pages and keep the margins readable.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Alcune pagine sono ruotate, può sistemarle?
Some pages are rotated, can you fix them?
ahl-KOO-neh PAH-jee-neh SO-no rwoh-TAH-teh, pwoh see-steh-MAR-leh
Use this when several pages are sideways. The pronoun le refers to the pages. Use può for one staff member, potete for a group.
Questa pagina è orizzontale, quella è verticale.
This page is landscape, that one is portrait.
KWEH-stah PAH-jee-nah eh oh-reet-tson-TAH-leh, KWEH-lah eh veer-tee-KAH-leh
Use this while pointing at pages on a screen or a proof sheet. Orizzontale means the page is wider than it is tall; verticale means taller than it is wide.
Vorrei che tutto fosse leggibile.
I would like everything to be readable.
vor-RAY keh TOOT-toh FOS-seh leh-JEE-bee-leh
A polite way to state your goal without giving technical instructions. Use it when you care about the final result, not the exact method.
Può ruotare solo le pagine dispari?
Can you rotate only the odd-numbered pages?
pwoh rwoh-TAH-reh SO-lo leh PAH-jee-neh DEES-pah-ree
Useful when the mixed orientation follows a pattern. Dispari means odd; pari means even.
I margini sono troppo stretti?
Are the margins too narrow?
ee MAR-jee-nee SO-no TROP-poh STRET-tee
Ask this before printing. Staff may answer that the margin is too small for binding or trimming. Margini is plural; margine is singular.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
To describe a problem with pages, use Alcune pagine sono + past participle: Alcune pagine sono ruotate (some pages are rotated). To ask for a fix, use Può + infinitive: Può sistemarle? (Can you fix them?) or Può ruotarle? (Can you rotate them?) The object pronoun goes on the end of the infinitive: sistemare + le becomes sistemarle. For a group of staff, switch to Potete: Potete sistemarle? This keeps the request polite and collaborative.
When to use it
Use orizzontale and verticale when you are looking at the file together. If you are not sure which pages are wrong, say Non so quali pagine sono ruotate (I don't know which pages are rotated) and ask Può controllare? (Can you check?). If you want a specific result, use Vorrei che + subjunctive: Vorrei che tutto fosse leggibile. This is slightly formal but natural in a service situation. For margins, ask I margini sono troppo stretti? and listen for answers like Sì, sono un po' stretti (Yes, they are a bit narrow) or No, vanno bene (No, they are fine).
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Buongiorno, ho un PDF con alcune pagine orizzontali e altre verticali.

In Italian copy shops, customers often explain the result they want rather than giving technical commands. Using vorrei and può keeps the tone collaborative, especially when staff are busy. If you speak to more than one person, use potete instead of può. In many parts of Italy, copy shops are called copisterie; in some cities you may also hear the English word print shop. Regional pronunciation varies, but the written forms here are standard.
One thing to watch for
Learners often say Ho alcune pagine orizzontali e verticali, which can sound as if the same pages are both landscape and portrait.
Try this instead: Separate the two groups clearly: Alcune pagine sono orizzontali e altre sono verticali. If you mean a mix, you can also say Il PDF ha orientamenti diversi (the PDF has different orientations).
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you ask one staff member to rotate only the even pages?
Show a sample answer
Può ruotare solo le pagine pari?
This uses può for one person and pari for even pages. You could also say Potete ruotare solo le pagine pari? if you are speaking to a group.
2What does Vorrei che tutto fosse leggibile mean, and when would you say it?
Show a sample answer
It means 'I would like everything to be readable.' You say it when you care about the final printed result rather than a specific technical step.
The phrase uses vorrei che plus the subjunctive fosse. A simpler alternative is Voglio che tutto sia leggibile, but vorrei is more polite.
3A staff member asks: I margini sono troppo stretti? What are they asking about?
Show a sample answer
They are asking whether the margins are too narrow.
Margini means margins, troppo means too, and stretti means narrow. You can answer Sì, sono un po' stretti or No, vanno bene.
Point to the pages, say Alcune pagine sono ruotate, ask Può sistemarle?, and state your goal with Vorrei che tutto fosse leggibile. Check margins before printing.
