How to Define Abstract Ideas in Italian: Justice, Happiness and More

Learn to define abstract nouns in Italian with simple, natural patterns such as 'La giustizia significa equità per tutti' and 'significa che...'.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

Defining an abstract idea in Italian is a practical skill you can build with a small set of patterns. The core verb is 'significare' (to mean), and the most useful frame is 'X significa Y' — 'La giustizia significa equità per tutti' (Justice means fairness for everyone). You can also define by consequence with 'significa che...' plus a verb, or by essence with 'è' plus a noun or adjective. This lesson gives you those frames, the vocabulary for justice, happiness, freedom and peace, and the small grammar points that keep your definitions natural rather than translated from English.

    By the end, you can…

    • define an abstract noun in Italian using 'significare' plus a noun phrase
    • expand a definition with 'significa che...' plus a verb in the indicative
    • distinguish a definition ('Che cos'è...?') from an opinion ('Che cosa pensi di...?')

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

La giustizia significa equità per tutti.

    Justice means fairness for everyone.

    lah joo-STEE-tsah see-nyee-FEE-kah eh-kwee-TAH pehr TOOT-tee

The core definition frame: abstract noun + significa + noun phrase. 'Equità' is the standard noun for fairness.

La felicità significa stare bene con se stessi.

Happiness means feeling good about yourself.

    lah feh-lee-chee-TAH see-nyee-FEE-kah STAH-reh BEH-neh kon seh STES-see

Use 'significa' plus an infinitive when the definition is an action or state rather than a thing.

Essere liberi significa che puoi scegliere.

Being free means that you can choose.

    ES-seh-reh LEE-beh-ree see-nyee-FEE-kah keh PWOY SHEH-lyeh-reh

'Significa che' introduces a full clause; the verb stays in the indicative, not the subjunctive.

Che cos'è la pace, secondo te?

What is peace, in your opinion?

    keh koh-ZEH lah PAH-cheh, seh-KON-doh teh

The standard question for asking a definition. 'Secondo te' softens it into an invitation to explain.

Per me, la libertà è poter dire quello che pensi.

For me, freedom is being able to say what you think.

    pehr meh, lah lee-behr-TAH eh poh-TEHR DEE-reh KWEL-loh keh PEN-see

'Per me' marks a personal definition. Use it when you are offering your own view, not a dictionary meaning.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The workhorse pattern is 'X significa Y'. X is a singular abstract noun with its article: la giustizia, la felicità, la libertà, la pace, la verità. Y can be a noun phrase ('equità per tutti'), an infinitive ('stare bene con se stessi'), or a clause introduced by che ('che puoi scegliere'). Keep 'significare' in the third person singular: significa. Do not add 'di' before an infinitive — 'significa stare bene', not 'significa di stare bene'. For a personal definition, swap in 'Per me, X è...'.

    When to use it

Use 'significa' when you are explaining what a word or idea denotes, especially in a discussion, a classroom or a written definition. Use 'vuol dire' in the same way in everyday speech: 'La pace vuol dire rispetto.' Use 'è' when you are identifying the essence: 'La verità è la conformità ai fatti.' Use 'Per me' or 'Secondo me' when the definition is your opinion rather than a shared one. If someone asks 'Che cosa significa giustizia?', answer with 'Significa...' and no subject pronoun.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Italian discussion, 'significa' and 'vuol dire' are close synonyms, but 'vuol dire' is more conversational and 'significa' slightly more formal or written. When you give a personal definition, 'Per me' is common and polite; 'Secondo me' is equally standard. Avoid presenting a personal definition as universal by dropping the framing phrase, which can sound assertive in a debate.

    One thing to watch for

La giustizia significa di essere equi per tutti.

Try this instead: Do not put 'di' before an infinitive after 'significare'. Say 'La giustizia significa essere equi per tutti' or, more naturally, 'La giustizia significa equità per tutti.' The verb 'significare' takes a direct infinitive or a noun phrase, not 'di' plus infinitive.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1Translate: 'Freedom means being able to choose.'

    Show a sample answer

    La libertà significa poter scegliere.

'Significare' takes the infinitive directly, with no preposition. 'La libertà vuol dire poter scegliere' is also correct and more colloquial.

2Turn this into a definition question: 'What does peace mean?'

    Show a sample answer

    Che cosa significa la pace?

'Che cosa significa' plus the noun with its article is the standard definition question. 'Che cos'è la pace?' is also correct but asks more about essence than meaning.

3Correct the error: 'La felicità significa di stare bene.'

    Show a sample answer

    La felicità significa stare bene.

Remove 'di'. After 'significare', an infinitive follows directly. The same rule applies to 'vuol dire'.

    Take this with you

Define abstract ideas in Italian with 'X significa Y', where Y is a noun phrase, a bare infinitive, or a clause with 'che'. Add 'Per me' when the definition is your own view.
