    Dove posso noleggiare una bici?

Where can I rent a bike?

    DOH-veh POS-soh noh-led-JAH-reh OO-nah BEE-chee

The standard, polite way to ask. Bici is the common short form of bicicletta and is feminine, so it takes una.

    Quanto costa il noleggio?

How much does the rental cost?

    KWAHN-toh KOS-tah eel noh-LED-joh

Use this to ask the price in general. Noleggio is a masculine noun meaning 'rental' or 'hire'.

    Quanto costa all'ora?

How much is it per hour?

    KWAHN-toh KOS-tah al-LOH-rah

All'ora means 'per hour'. Use al giorno for 'per day' and alla settimana for 'per week'.

Vorrei noleggiare una bici per un giorno.

I would like to rent a bike for one day.

    vor-RAY noh-led-JAH-reh OO-nah BEE-chee pehr oon JOHR-noh

Vorrei is a polite way to say 'I would like'. Per un giorno specifies the rental period.

    È inclusa l'assicurazione?

    Is insurance included?

    eh een-KLOO-zah las-see-koo-rah-TSYOH-neh

Useful when checking what the price covers. Assicurazione is feminine, hence inclusa.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern Dove posso + infinitive asks 'Where can I...?'. Posso is the first-person form of potere, 'to be able to'. Examples: Dove posso noleggiare una bici? (Where can I rent a bike?), Dove posso comprare un biglietto? (Where can I buy a ticket?). To ask about price, use Quanto costa...? followed by a singular noun: Quanto costa il noleggio? For plural items, use Quanto costano...?

    When to use it

Use noleggiare for renting something temporarily, such as a bike, car or boat. Do not confuse it with affittare, which usually refers to renting an apartment or a longer-term arrangement. In a bike shop you can simply say Vorrei noleggiare una bici. If you want to sound less formal, you can ask Posso noleggiare una bici qui? (Can I rent a bike here?). In northern Italy you may hear the short form bici; in some regions people also say bicicletta in full, which is equally correct.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Italy, noleggiare is the normal verb for renting a bike for a short period. Prices are usually given in euro per hour (all'ora) or per day (al giorno). In many cities you will also see bike-sharing stations, where you can say Vorrei noleggiare una bici con l'app. Politeness matters: use Buongiorno when entering a shop, and vorrei rather than voglio when making a request.

    One thing to watch for

Using affittare una bici for a short bike rental.

Try this instead: Affittare is used mainly for longer-term rentals such as apartments. For a bike rented by the hour or day, use noleggiare: Vorrei noleggiare una bici per un giorno. Using affittare here can sound odd or suggest a long-term contract.
