German for Finding Middle Ground: Saying 'How about we split the difference?'

Learn German phrases for proposing a compromise, from partial agreement to splitting the difference, with polite register and regional notes.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

When two people want different things, you do not always need to win the argument. In German, a useful intermediate skill is proposing a middle ground: acknowledging the other position, then offering a concrete compromise. This lesson teaches phrases such as 'Wie wäre es, wenn wir uns in der Mitte treffen?' and 'Können wir uns auf einen Kompromiss einigen?' You will practise softening disagreement, making a counter-proposal, and confirming a deal. The focus is on reaching agreement, not on proving who is right.

    By the end, you can…

    • propose a compromise in German using 'Wie wäre es, wenn ...' and 'in der Mitte treffen'.
    • respond flexibly to a counter-proposal with partial agreement and a condition.
    • confirm a compromise politely and distinguish formal and informal register.

Wie wäre es, wenn wir uns in der Mitte treffen?

How about we split the difference?

vee VEH-ruh es, ven veer uns in der MIT-tuh TREF-en

Standard polite suggestion. 'Wie wäre es, wenn ...' takes a subordinate clause with the verb at the end. Use with colleagues, acquaintances or in service situations.

Können wir uns auf einen Kompromiss einigen?

Can we agree on a compromise?

    KUR-nen veer uns owf EYE-nen kom-pro-MISS EYE-ni-gen

Formal and neutral. 'Sich auf etwas einigen' means to agree on something. Useful in meetings or negotiations when you want to move toward a solution.

Das sehe ich anders, aber ich bin bereit, einen Schritt auf dich zuzugehen.

I see it differently, but I'm willing to meet you halfway.

    das ZAY-uh ikh AN-ders, AH-ber ikh bin buh-RYTE, EYE-nen shrit owf dikh TSOO-gay-en

Shows flexibility without giving up your view. 'Einen Schritt auf jemanden zugehen' is a common idiom for making a concession. Informal 'dich'; formal would be 'auf Sie zuzugehen'.

Von mir aus können wir es so machen.

As far as I'm concerned, we can do it that way.

fon meer ows KUR-nen veer es zo MAKH-en

'Von mir aus' signals limited but genuine agreement. It can sound slightly reluctant, so pair it with a friendly tone. Common in informal spoken German.

Dann machen wir es halb und halb.

Then let's do it half and half.

dan MAKH-en veer es halp unt halp

Very common informal compromise formula. It suggests an even split, often of time, cost or tasks. Not usually used in formal written German.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is 'Wie wäre es, wenn wir ...' plus a verb at the end: 'Wie wäre es, wenn wir uns in der Mitte treffen?' or 'Wie wäre es, wenn wir die Kosten teilen?' This is a polite suggestion, not a demand. For a more formal tone, use 'Könnten wir uns darauf einigen, dass ...' with a subordinate clause: 'Könnten wir uns darauf einigen, dass jeder die Hälfte übernimmt?' The modal 'könnten' (could) softens the proposal. To accept, say 'Das wäre ein guter Kompromiss' or 'Damit kann ich leben'. To reject gently, say 'Das geht leider nicht, aber vielleicht ...' and offer an alternative.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when both sides have legitimate needs and a full victory is unlikely. For example, if a colleague wants a meeting at 9 a.m. and you prefer 11 a.m., say: 'Wie wäre es, wenn wir uns um 10 Uhr treffen?' If you are dividing work, try: 'Dann machen wir es halb und halb: Ich übernehme den ersten Teil, du den zweiten.' In formal contexts, such as with a landlord or a client, prefer 'Könnten wir einen Kompromiss finden?' rather than the informal 'Von mir aus'. In Austria and southern Germany, 'passt schon' can signal acceptance of a compromise, but it is casual and regionally marked.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

Saturday sounds good. Then let's do it half and half: morning me, afternoon you.ZAM-stakh klingt goot. dan MAKH-en veer es halp unt halp: FOR-mit-takh ikh, NAKH-mit-takh doo

A little context goes a long way

German compromise language often sounds more direct than English. 'Von mir aus' can seem grudging if said flatly, so add a friendly 'Gerne' or 'Das passt für mich'. In formal settings, use 'Könnten wir ...' and 'Ich wäre bereit ...' rather than 'Wir machen das so'. In Switzerland, 'Das geht in Ordnung' is a common neutral acceptance; in Austria, 'Passt schon' is informal and friendly. Avoid treating any one regional phrase as universal.

    One thing to watch for

Using 'Wir treffen uns in der Mitte' to mean 'we split the difference' in a negotiation.

Try this instead: 'Sich in der Mitte treffen' usually refers to meeting at a physical location halfway between two places. For a compromise on terms, use 'Wir einigen uns auf einen Kompromiss' or 'Wir machen es halb und halb'. Example: 'Können wir uns auf einen Kompromiss einigen?'

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you politely propose splitting the difference in German?

    Show a sample answer

Wie wäre es, wenn wir uns in der Mitte treffen?

This uses the polite suggestion formula 'Wie wäre es, wenn ...' with the verb 'treffen' at the end. 'Könnten wir uns in der Mitte treffen?' is also correct and slightly more formal.

2Translate: 'I see it differently, but I'm willing to meet you halfway.' Use informal 'du'.

    Show a sample answer

Das sehe ich anders, aber ich bin bereit, einen Schritt auf dich zuzugehen.

'Einen Schritt auf dich zugehen' expresses a concession. With formal 'Sie', it becomes 'auf Sie zuzugehen'. 'Ich bin bereit' is neutral and clear.

3What does 'Dann machen wir es halb und halb' mean, and when would you use it?

    Show a sample answer

It means 'Then let's do it half and half.' Use it informally to propose an even split of work, cost or time, for example: 'Dann machen wir es halb und halb: Ich zahle die Hälfte.'

It is a common spoken compromise formula. In formal writing, prefer 'Wir teilen es zu gleichen Teilen' or 'Wir einigen uns auf einen Kompromiss'.

    Take this with you

To find middle ground in German, soften your suggestion with 'Wie wäre es, wenn ...' or 'Könnten wir ...', show flexibility with 'Ich bin bereit, einen Schritt auf dich zuzugehen', and confirm with 'Das wäre ein guter Kompromiss' or 'Dann machen wir es halb und halb'.
