German for Describing Torn Packaging at a Pickup Counter

Learn to report damaged packaging in German at a parcel pickup counter: describe tears, ask staff questions, and request documentation in neutral, factual language.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

At a German pickup counter, staff may hand you a parcel whose outer packaging is already torn, dented or partly open. You need calm, factual German to point out the damage, ask what to do next, and say that you want it recorded. This lesson gives you three reusable patterns: describing the condition of the packaging, naming exactly where it is torn, and stating that you want the damage documented. The register stays neutral and factual; you are reporting what you see, not making legal claims. All phrases work in everyday standard German and are understood throughout Germany.

    By the end, you can…

    • describe damaged packaging with 'Die Verpackung ist beschädigt.'
    • say where a parcel is torn using 'Das Paket ist an der Seite aufgerissen.'
    • ask counter staff to document the damage with 'Ich möchte das dokumentieren.'
    • ask practical follow-up questions about opening, checking or reporting the parcel.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    Die Verpackung ist beschädigt.

    The packaging is damaged.

    dee fer-PAK-oong ist be-SHEH-dikt

Neutral, factual opening line when you notice any damage to the outer packaging. Works for tears, dents or crushed corners.

Das Paket ist an der Seite aufgerissen.

The parcel is torn open on the side.

    das pa-KET ist an dair ZY-te OWF-ge-ris-sen

Names the exact location. Replace 'an der Seite' with 'an der Ecke' (at the corner) or 'oben' (on top) as needed.

    Ich möchte das dokumentieren.

I would like to have this documented.

    ikh MERKH-te das do-koo-men-TEE-ren

Polite, standard way to ask staff to record the damage before you take the parcel. 'Ich möchte' is softer than 'Ich will'.

    Können Sie das bitte festhalten?

    Could you please record that?

    KER-nen zee das BIT-te FEST-hal-ten

Alternative to 'dokumentieren'. 'Festhalten' here means to note something down officially or in writing.

Kann ich das Paket hier öffnen und den Inhalt prüfen?

Can I open the parcel here and check the contents?

kan ikh das pa-KET heer ERF-nen oont dane IN-halt PRER-fen

Useful when you want to inspect the goods before leaving the counter. Ask before opening anything.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is: subject + ist + adjective or participle. 'Die Verpackung ist beschädigt.' and 'Das Paket ist aufgerissen.' follow the same structure. 'Beschädigt' is a general adjective meaning damaged; 'aufgerissen' is a past participle meaning torn open. To add a location, use 'an' + dative: 'an der Seite', 'an der Ecke', 'an der Unterseite'. For example: 'Das Paket ist an der Ecke aufgerissen.' This keeps your report precise and easy for staff to understand.

    When to use it

Use these sentences at the moment the parcel is handed over, before you sign anything or leave the counter. Start with the general statement 'Die Verpackung ist beschädigt.', then add the specific detail 'Das Paket ist an der Seite aufgerissen.' If you want a record, say 'Ich möchte das dokumentieren.' or 'Können Sie das bitte festhalten?' These are requests, not accusations, so they suit a neutral, cooperative tone. If you need to inspect the contents, ask first: 'Kann ich das Paket hier öffnen und den Inhalt prüfen?'

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Germany, it is common and accepted to point out damage at the counter and ask for it to be recorded before you take the parcel. Keep your tone factual and calm; staff usually respond cooperatively. Use 'Sie' with counter staff unless they offer 'du'. The verb 'dokumentieren' is standard here and does not imply a legal claim by itself.

    One thing to watch for

Using 'Ich will das dokumentieren' because 'will' looks like English 'will'.

Try this instead: In German, 'ich will' sounds blunt or demanding. Use 'Ich möchte das dokumentieren.' for a polite request. If you want to be even softer, say 'Könnten Sie das bitte dokumentieren?'

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'The packaging is damaged' in German?

    Show a sample answer

    Die Verpackung ist beschädigt.

This uses the standard pattern subject + ist + adjective. 'Die Verpackung' is feminine, so the article is 'die'. You could also say 'Die Verpackung ist kaputt.' in casual speech, but 'beschädigt' is more precise and neutral.

2You want to say the parcel is torn open at the corner. Which sentence fits?

    Show a sample answer

Das Paket ist an der Ecke aufgerissen.

'An der Ecke' means 'at the corner' and takes the dative after 'an'. 'Aufgerissen' is the past participle of 'aufreißen' and describes a tear. 'An der Seite' would mean 'on the side', which is also correct if that is where the tear is.

3How do you politely ask staff to document the damage?

    Show a sample answer

    Ich möchte das dokumentieren.

'Ich möchte' is the polite, standard way to express a wish. 'Das dokumentieren' refers to recording the damage. You could also ask 'Können Sie das bitte festhalten?' Both are appropriate at a pickup counter.

    Take this with you

At a German pickup counter, state the damage factually, name the exact spot, and ask for it to be documented before you leave: 'Die Verpackung ist beschädigt. Das Paket ist an der Seite aufgerissen. Ich möchte das dokumentieren.'
