How to Ask About Package Insurance in German: "Kann ich dieses Paket versichern?"
Learn to ask whether you can insure a package in German, understand what coverage includes, and discuss Versicherung at the post office or courier counter.

When you send a parcel in a German-speaking country, staff will often ask whether you want insurance, and you may want to ask for it yourself. This lesson gives you the exact sentences for asking "Can I insure this package?", for checking what is covered, and for stating the value you want insured. You will practise the verb "versichern" (to insure), the noun "die Versicherung" (insurance), and the key question words "was", "wie hoch" and "bis zu welchem Betrag". The focus is on real counter conversations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where wording and prices differ but the grammar you need stays the same.
By the end, you can…
- ask whether a package can be insured and request insurance at a post office or courier counter.
- ask what a given level of coverage includes and up to what amount it pays.
- state the value of my package and choose between standard and higher insurance.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Kann ich dieses Paket versichern?
Can I insure this package?
kahn ikh DEE-zes pah-KET fair-ZIKH-ern
The core question. "Versichern" is a regular verb; the modal "kann" sends it to the end of the sentence. Use it at any post or courier counter.
Ist das Paket automatisch versichert?
Is the package automatically insured?
ist das pah-KET ow-toh-MAH-tish fair-ZIKH-ert
Useful when you are not sure whether basic coverage is already included in the shipping price.
Was ist in der Versicherung enthalten?
What is included in the insurance?
vas ist in dair fair-ZIKH-er-oong ent-HAL-ten
"Enthalten" means "included". This asks about the scope of coverage, not the price.
Bis zu welchem Betrag ist das Paket versichert?
Up to what amount is the package insured?
bis tsoo VEL-khem be-TRAHK ist das pah-KET fair-ZIKH-ert
"Bis zu welchem Betrag" is the standard way to ask about a coverage limit. Answer with a sum, e.g. "bis 500 Euro".
Ich möchte das Paket für 200 Euro versichern.
I would like to insure the package for 200 euros.
ikh MERKH-te das pah-KET fuer TSVAI-hun-dert OY-roh fair-ZIKH-ern
The recording uses 200 Euro as an example insured value. Replace it with the actual amount and the currency quoted by the provider; do not assume the same currency or coverage across countries. Switzerland uses Swiss francs.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
German uses the modal verb "kann" plus the infinitive at the end: "Kann ich dieses Paket versichern?" The same frame works with other modals: "Muss ich das Paket versichern?" (Do I have to insure the package?) and "Sollte ich das Paket versichern?" (Should I insure the package?). For a statement, put the verb in second position: "Ich versichere das Paket." To name a value, add "für" plus the amount: "für 200 Euro". The noun is feminine: "die Versicherung", plural "die Versicherungen". The adjective is "versichert" (insured): "Das Paket ist versichert."
When to use it
Use "Kann ich dieses Paket versichern?" at the start of the transaction, before you pay. If the clerk has already offered insurance, you can simply answer "Ja, bitte" or "Nein, danke". Ask "Was ist in der Versicherung enthalten?" when you need details about loss, damage or theft. Ask "Bis zu welchem Betrag ist das Paket versichert?" when the limit matters, for example with electronics. In Switzerland you may hear "die Sendung" (the consignment) instead of "das Paket"; in Austria "das Paket" is standard. If you want extra cover, say "Ich möchte eine höhere Versicherung" (I would like higher insurance).
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Guten Tag, ich möchte dieses Paket nach Hamburg schicken. Kann ich es versichern?

In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, postal and courier staff usually ask about insurance as a routine step, so a short "Ja, bitte" or "Nein, danke" is perfectly polite. Use "Sie" with staff unless they offer "du" first. Prices and default coverage limits differ by provider and country, so treat any figure you hear as an example and confirm the current terms at the counter or on the provider's website.
One thing to watch for
Treating an example amount as the provider’s actual coverage limit, or confusing insuring a package with having a provider arrange insurance.
Try this instead: Kann ich dieses Paket versichern? asks whether you can insure the package. Kann ich dieses Paket versichern lassen? is also grammatical: lassen means having someone arrange the insurance. Confirm the amount, currency and coverage with the provider; the recorded figures are examples.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you ask a clerk whether you can insure a package?
Show a sample answer
Kann ich dieses Paket versichern?
This uses the modal "kann" with the infinitive "versichern" at the end, the standard polite question form. "Könnte ich dieses Paket versichern?" is also correct and slightly more tentative.
2Ask what the insurance includes and whether damage is covered.
Show a sample answer
Was ist in der Versicherung enthalten? Ist Beschädigung abgedeckt?
"Enthalten" asks about scope, and "abgedeckt" means "covered". "Ist Schaden abgedeckt?" is a valid alternative, though "Beschädigung" is more precise for physical damage.
3Say that you want to insure the package for 300 euros.
Show a sample answer
Ich möchte das Paket für 300 Euro versichern.
"Möchte" plus the infinitive at the end expresses a polite wish, and "für 300 Euro" states the insured value. "Ich will das Paket für 300 Euro versichern" is grammatical but blunter.
Ask "Kann ich dieses Paket versichern?" first, then check the limit with "Bis zu welchem Betrag ist das Paket versichert?" and the scope with "Was ist in der Versicherung enthalten?" before you pay.
