To offer help, use 'pouvoir' (can) + subject + verb. Formal: 'Puis-je vous aider ?' or 'Je peux vous aider ?' Informal: 'Est-ce que je peux t'aider ?' or 'Je peux t'aider ?' The choice of 'vous' vs. 'tu' is crucial. For ongoing offers, use 'Fais-moi signe si...' (informal) or 'N'hésitez pas à me faire signe si...' (formal).
When to use it
Use formal forms with strangers, older people, or in professional contexts. Use informal forms with friends, family, and peers. If unsure, start formal; the other person may invite you to use 'tu'. In France, using 'vous' is safer with strangers unless they invite you to use 'tu'. Offering help too insistently can seem pushy; a single polite offer is usually enough. In Quebec, informal offers may use 'tu' more quickly, but formal contexts still require 'vous'.
One thing to watch for
Using 'tu' with a stranger when offering help, e.g., 'Je peux t'aider ?'
Try this instead: Use 'vous' for formal situations: 'Je peux vous aider ?' Save 'tu' for friends and family.
