French for Beginners: How to Politely Ask for Help and Directions

Asking for help is one of the first real conversations you will have in French. The difference between a request that lands well and one that sounds abrupt usually comes down to a few fixed phrases and the choice between tu and vous. This lesson gives you ready-made polite requests for directions, for a stranger's attention, and for favors from people you know. It does not cover offering help; it focuses only on asking for it.

Use with a friend, family member, or someone you call tu. It is casual but not rude.

The tu form of s'il vous plaît is s'il te plaît. Pourrais is a polite conditional, softer than peux.

Useful pattern
The core pattern is a polite opener plus a request. With strangers, start with Excusez-moi, then use pouvez-vous or pourriez-vous plus the infinitive: Pouvez-vous m'aider ? / Pourriez-vous me dire où est la poste ? With friends, switch to tu: Tu peux m'aider ? / Tu pourrais me dire où est la poste ? Adding s'il vous plaît (formal) or s'il te plaît (informal) makes the request noticeably warmer. For example, Excusez-moi, pourriez-vous me dire où est la gare, s'il vous plaît ? is fully polite and natural.
When to use it
Use vous with strangers, in shops, with officials, and with anyone significantly older unless they invite tu. Use tu with friends, classmates, close family, and children. If you are unsure, start with vous; a French speaker may then say on peut se tutoyer, and you can switch. Pourriez-vous and pourrais-tu are softer than pouvez-vous and peux-tu, so they work well when you are asking a bigger favor or interrupting someone. For a tiny request, Je peux vous demander quelque chose ? is a gentle way to begin.

In France, Belgium, and Switzerland, bonjour is expected before any request, even in a shop or on the street. Starting with Excusez-moi, bonjour... is more natural than Excusez-moi alone. In Quebec, bonjour works the same way, and vous remains the safe default with strangers. S'il vous plaît is standard everywhere; s'il te plaît is only for tu relationships. A short Merci before or after the request is also common and sounds friendly.
One thing to watch for
Using tu with a stranger because English uses you for everyone.
Try this instead: With strangers, keep vous: Excusez-moi, pouvez-vous m'aider ? not Excuse-moi, tu peux m'aider ? The tu form is for friends, family, and children. If you are unsure, use vous until the other person suggests tutoyer.

Tu peux is the normal informal request with a friend. Tu pourrais m'aider... ? is also fine and sounds a little softer. Do not use vous with a close friend unless that is your usual relationship.

The choice depends on the pronoun you use with the person. With a stranger or someone you address as vous, say s'il vous plaît. With a friend you call tu, say s'il te plaît. Mixing them sounds inconsistent.
Start with Excusez-moi or Bonjour, choose vous with strangers and tu with friends, use pourriez-vous or pourrais-tu for a softer request, and add s'il vous plaît or s'il te plaît to keep the tone polite.
