French for Joining Group Conversations: 'Je peux me joindre à vous ?' and 'Vous parlez de quoi ?'

Learn to enter an ongoing French conversation politely, ask what the group is discussing, and contribute naturally when multiple people are talking.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

Joining a conversation that is already in progress is different from starting a one-on-one chat. In French, you need a polite way to interrupt, a clear question to find out the topic, and strategies to manage turn-taking with several speakers. This lesson gives you elementary-level phrases to enter a group, listen, and add a comment without sounding abrupt. You will practise standard French, with notes on informal and regional usage. The focus is on spoken interaction: getting attention, asking about the topic, and making a simple contribution.

    By the end, you can…

    • politely ask to join an ongoing conversation in French.
    • ask what a group is talking about and understand a short answer.
    • contribute a simple opinion or question when several people are speaking.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Je peux me joindre à vous ?

    May I join you?

zhuh puh muh zhwaⁿ-druh ah voo

Standard polite way to ask to join a group. Use with people you do not know well or in a formal setting. The reflexive verb 'se joindre à' is followed by 'vous' here.

    Vous parlez de quoi ?

    What are you talking about?

    voo par-lay duh kwah

Informal but common in spoken French. Word order with 'de quoi' at the end is typical of casual conversation. In more formal French, say 'De quoi parlez-vous ?'.

Je peux dire un mot ?

Can I say something? / Can I put in a word?

    zhuh puh deer uⁿ moh

A friendly way to ask for a turn when several people are talking. It literally means 'Can I say a word?' and works in small groups.

    Excusez-moi de vous interrompre.

    Excuse me for interrupting.

    eks-kew-zay mwah duh voo-zaⁿ-tay-roⁿ-pruh

Polite apology before breaking into a conversation. Use it when you need to get the group's attention. In informal speech, you may hear 'Désolé de vous interrompre'.

    Moi aussi, je trouve que...

    I also think that...

    mwah oh-see, zhuh troov kuh

A simple way to agree and add your own view. 'Moi aussi' highlights that you share the feeling. Complete the sentence with an opinion, e.g. 'Moi aussi, je trouve que c'est intéressant.'

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To join a group, start with a polite formula, then ask about the topic. A common pattern is: 'Excusez-moi de vous interrompre. Vous parlez de quoi ?' (Excuse me for interrupting. What are you talking about?). After you hear the answer, you can react with 'Ah bon ?' (Really?) or 'Intéressant.' (Interesting.) Then ask to contribute: 'Je peux dire un mot ?' This sequence works because it shows respect, gathers information, and requests a turn. Note that 'vous' is used for a group, even if you would use 'tu' with each person individually.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when you approach two or more people already talking. If the group is informal and includes friends, 'Vous parlez de quoi ?' is fine. If the setting is formal or you do not know them, prefer 'De quoi parlez-vous ?' and 'Puis-je me joindre à vous ?' (May I join you? – more formal). When you want to add a point, wait for a short pause and say 'Je peux dire un mot ?' or 'Moi aussi, je trouve que...' Avoid talking over others; in French group conversations, a brief 'Excusez-moi' or 'Pardon' helps you get the floor.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In many French-speaking contexts, joining a conversation without a brief polite formula can seem rude, especially with strangers or in formal settings. A short 'Excusez-moi' or 'Pardon' is expected before you speak. Among friends, 'Vous parlez de quoi ?' is common, but in more formal French, inversion ('De quoi parlez-vous ?') is preferred. Regional differences exist: in Québec, informal pronunciation may sound different, but the polite phrases remain similar. When in doubt, use 'vous' for a group and wait for a pause before contributing.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 'Je peux joindre à vous ?' without the reflexive pronoun 'me'.

Try this instead: The verb is 'se joindre à' and needs the reflexive pronoun: 'Je peux me joindre à vous ?' Without 'me', the sentence is grammatically incorrect. Similarly, do not say 'Je peux me joindre avec vous ?' – the preposition is 'à', not 'avec'.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1You see two classmates talking and want to join. What polite question can you ask?

    Show a sample answer

Je peux me joindre à vous ?

This is the standard polite way to ask to join a group. 'Puis-je me joindre à vous ?' is also correct and more formal.

2You want to know what the group is discussing. What can you say informally?

    Show a sample answer

    Vous parlez de quoi ?

This informal question is common in spoken French. In a formal context, 'De quoi parlez-vous ?' is better.

3You agree with someone and want to add your opinion. Complete: 'Moi aussi, je trouve que...'

    Show a sample answer

Moi aussi, je trouve que c'est une bonne idée.

This pattern lets you agree and contribute. Any logical completion works, e.g. 'Moi aussi, je trouve que c'est intéressant.'

    Take this with you

To join a French group conversation, start with a polite 'Excusez-moi' or 'Je peux me joindre à vous ?', ask 'Vous parlez de quoi ?' to find the topic, and request a turn with 'Je peux dire un mot ?'. Then contribute simply with 'Moi aussi, je trouve que...'.
