Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends talking over coffee in a city café

When you eat out in a French-speaking country, you often need to check one particular dish rather than explain your whole diet. This lesson teaches you how to ask 'Is this dish vegetarian?' and 'Is this dish gluten-free?' in French, and how to understand the answer. You will learn polite question forms, key vocabulary, and common replies such as 'Oui, il est végétarien' or 'Non, il contient du gluten.' The focus is on checking a specific dish, not on discussing your overall dietary needs.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask whether a specific dish is vegetarian in French.
    • ask whether a specific dish is gluten-free in French.
    • understand simple yes/no answers about a dish's ingredients.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Est-ce que ce plat est végétarien ?

    Is this dish vegetarian?

    ess-kuh suh plah eh vay-zhay-tah-ryen

Standard polite question. Use 'ce plat' for a dish you can point to or that is on the menu.

Est-ce que ce plat est sans gluten ?

    Is this dish gluten-free?

ess-kuh suh plah eh sahn glue-ten

'Sans gluten' is the standard phrase throughout the French-speaking world. The pronunciation of 'un' varies by region (in Quebec it is closer to [œ̃]), but the phrase itself is the same.

Ce plat contient-il de la viande ?

    Does this dish contain meat?

suh plah kon-tyen-teel duh lah vyahnd

A useful follow-up if you want to be sure. The inverted form 'contient-il' is formal but common in restaurants.

    Il y a du gluten là-dedans ?

    Is there gluten in there?

    eel yah dew glue-ten lah-duh-dahn

Informal spoken French. 'Là-dedans' means 'in there' and is very common in casual conversation. Note that 'il y a' is usually pronounced 'ya' in fast speech.

    C'est végétarien ou pas ?

    Is it vegetarian or not?

    seh vay-zhay-tah-ryen oo pah

A simple either/or question. Useful when you want a quick yes/no answer.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To ask about a specific dish, use 'Est-ce que ce plat est...' followed by the adjective or phrase. For example: 'Est-ce que ce plat est végétarien ?' (Is this dish vegetarian?) and 'Est-ce que ce plat est sans gluten ?' (Is this dish gluten-free?). You can also use 'Ce plat est-il...' in more formal writing, but 'Est-ce que' is perfectly polite in speech. To ask about ingredients, use 'Est-ce qu'il y a...' as in 'Est-ce qu'il y a de la viande ?' (Is there meat?).

    When to use it

Use these questions when you are ordering a specific dish and need to check its suitability. For example, if you see 'ratatouille' on the menu, you can ask 'Est-ce que la ratatouille est végétarienne ?' (Is the ratatouille vegetarian?). If you are gluten-free, ask 'Est-ce que ce plat est sans gluten ?' before ordering. In casual settings, you can shorten to 'C'est végétarien ?' (Is it vegetarian?). Always use 'vous' with staff unless you know them well.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Bonjour, est-ce que ce plat est végétarien ?

Hello, is this dish vegetarian?bon-zhoor, ess-kuh suh plah eh vay-zhay-tah-ryen
    B

Oui, il est végétarien. Il n'y a pas de viande.

Yes, it is vegetarian. There is no meat.wee, eel eh vay-zhay-tah-ryen. eel nyah pah duh vyahnd
    A

    Est-ce qu'il est sans gluten aussi ?

    Is it gluten-free too?ess-keel eh sahn glue-ten oh-see
    B

Non, il contient du gluten. Il y a de la farine.

No, it contains gluten. There is flour.nohn, eel kon-tyen dew glue-ten. eel yah duh lah fah-reen

A little context goes a long way

In France, vegetarianism is increasingly common but not universal. Some dishes may contain hidden meat products like stock or lardons. It is normal to ask specific questions about a dish. In Quebec, the phrase 'sans gluten' is the same, though the pronunciation of 'un' differs. In Belgium and Switzerland, restaurant staff are generally used to such questions. Always be polite and use 'vous' with servers.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 'Je suis végétarien' when you mean 'Is this dish vegetarian?'

Try this instead: To ask about a dish, say 'Est-ce que ce plat est végétarien ?' not 'Je suis végétarien' (I am vegetarian). The latter describes you, not the dish. Use 'ce plat' or the dish name: 'Est-ce que la quiche est végétarienne ?'

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you ask if the soup is gluten-free?

    Show a sample answer

Est-ce que la soupe est sans gluten ?

This uses the same pattern with the specific dish 'la soupe'. You could also say 'La soupe est-elle sans gluten ?' but the 'Est-ce que' form is more common in speech.

2What does 'Il contient du gluten' mean?

    Show a sample answer

    It contains gluten.

'Il contient' means 'it contains'. 'Du gluten' is partitive, meaning 'some gluten'. This is a common answer when a dish is not gluten-free.

3Translate: 'Is there meat in this dish?'

    Show a sample answer

    Est-ce qu'il y a de la viande dans ce plat ?

This uses 'Est-ce qu'il y a' (is there) plus 'de la viande' (meat) and 'dans ce plat' (in this dish). You could also ask 'Ce plat contient-il de la viande ?'

    Take this with you

To check a specific dish, use 'Est-ce que ce plat est végétarien ?' or 'Est-ce que ce plat est sans gluten ?' and listen for 'Oui' or 'Non' with a reason. Always be polite and specific.
