Chinese 'Unless' with 除非: Expressing Negative Conditions

Learn to use 除非 (chúfēi) to mean 'unless' in Mandarin. Build sentences like 'I won't go unless you come' and understand how 除非 differs from ordinary 如果 'if' clauses.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

In English, 'unless' introduces the only condition that would change a negative result: 'I won't go unless you come.' Mandarin expresses this with 除非 (chúfēi), often paired with 才 (cái) or 不然 (bùrán). Unlike 如果 (rúguǒ, 'if'), which can introduce any condition, 除非 highlights a necessary exception. This lesson teaches the core pattern 除非…,才… and its common variants, so you can state conditions confidently in everyday conversation.

    By the end, you can…

    • use 除非…,才… to say 'only if / unless' in Mandarin.
    • contrast 除非 with 如果 to choose the right conditional word.
    • form negative conditions like 'I won't go unless you come' in Chinese.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    除非你来,我才去。

I won't go unless you come.

chúfēi nǐ lái, wǒ cái qù

Core pattern: 除非 introduces the necessary condition; 才 marks the result that depends on it. Note that 除非…,才… often corresponds to English 'only if', while the negative result is implied.

    除非下雨,不然我们去公园。

We'll go to the park unless it rains.

chúfēi xiàyǔ, bùrán wǒmen qù gōngyuán

除非…,不然… means 'unless…, otherwise…'. 不然 introduces what happens if the condition is not met. Here the main clause is affirmative: 'we'll go unless it rains.'

    除非你道歉,否则我不原谅你。

I won't forgive you unless you apologize.

chúfēi nǐ dàoqiàn, fǒuzé wǒ bù yuánliàng nǐ

否则 (fǒuzé) is a formal synonym of 不然, common in writing and careful speech.

    除非很便宜,我才买。

I'll only buy it if it's very cheap.

chúfēi hěn piányi, wǒ cái mǎi

The condition can be an adjective phrase. 才 still marks the result. This pattern means 'only if', not 'unless'.

    除非你帮我,不然我做不完。

I can't finish unless you help me.

chúfēi nǐ bāng wǒ, bùrán wǒ zuò bù wán

Useful for asking for help. 做不完 means 'cannot finish'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The basic pattern is 除非 + condition,才 + result. 除非 means 'unless' or 'only if', and 才 emphasizes that the result happens only under that condition. Example: 除非你打电话,我才去。 'I won't go unless you call.' You can also use 除非…,不然/否则… to state the opposite result: 除非你打电话,不然我不去。 'Unless you call, I won't go.' Both patterns are common. Note that 除非 is not followed by 如果; they do not combine.

    When to use it

Use 除非 when the condition is an exception to a negative or restricted outcome. Compare: 如果下雨,我不去。 'If it rains, I won't go.' This is a general if-clause. 除非下雨,我才去。 'I won't go unless it rains.' Here rain is the only condition that would make me go. In everyday speech, 除非…,不然… is very frequent for warnings and plans: 除非堵车,不然我七点到。 'Unless there's traffic, I'll arrive at seven.' Use 除非 to sound precise about necessary conditions.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    明天你去爬山吗?

Are you going hiking tomorrow?míngtiān nǐ qù páshān ma
    B

    除非不下雨,我才去。

I'll go only if it doesn't rain.chúfēi bù xiàyǔ, wǒ cái qù
    A

    如果下雨呢?

What if it rains?rúguǒ xiàyǔ ne
    B

    除非你开车来接我,不然我不去。

Unless you drive to pick me up, I won't go.chúfēi nǐ kāichē lái jiē wǒ, bùrán wǒ bù qù

A little context goes a long way

除非 is neutral in register and used in both speech and writing. In formal writing, 否则 is preferred over 不然. When making requests, 除非…,不然… can sound blunt; adding 吧 or a polite tone softens it. For example, 除非你帮我,不然我真的没办法。 'Unless you help me, I really have no way.' This is acceptable among friends but may seem direct to strangers.

    One thing to watch for

Learners often say 除非你来,我去。 omitting 才, which makes the sentence sound incomplete or like a simple sequence.

Try this instead: Add 才 before the result: 除非你来,我才去。 'I won't go unless you come.' The 才 signals that the result depends on the 除非 condition. Alternatively, use 不然: 除非你来,不然我不去。

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

    1Translate: 'I won't eat unless I'm hungry.' Use 除非…,才….

    Show a sample answer

    除非我饿,我才吃。

除非 introduces the necessary condition 我饿, and 才 marks the result 吃. Word order follows the standard pattern.

2Choose the better word: 除非 / 如果 for 'Unless you hurry, we'll be late.'

    Show a sample answer

    除非你快一点,不然我们会迟到。

除非 is correct because the condition is an exception to a negative outcome. 如果 would mean 'If you hurry, we'll be late,' which changes the meaning.

3What does 否则 mean in 除非你道歉,否则我不原谅你?

    Show a sample answer

否则 means 'otherwise' or 'or else'.

否则 is a formal synonym of 不然, introducing the result if the 除非 condition is not met. Both are correct here.

    Take this with you

Use 除非…,才… for 'only if / unless' and 除非…,不然/否则… for 'unless…, otherwise…'. Keep 除非 for necessary exceptions, not general if-clauses.
