Chinese Conversation: Talking About Friendship and Chosen Bonds

Learn to describe close friends in Mandarin: say someone is always there for you, that you've been friends for years, and express why the friendship matters.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

In this lesson you will learn how to talk about friends in Mandarin Chinese. Unlike family, which is given, friendship is chosen, so the language often highlights loyalty, time, and emotional support. You will practice key phrases such as 她一直在我身边 (she's always there for me) and 我们是多年的朋友 (we've been friends for years). You will also learn how to express that a friendship is valuable using 重要 (important) and 珍惜 (to cherish). The lesson focuses on elementary sentence patterns with 是, 有, and time expressions, and it avoids assuming that Chinese works like English. By the end, you will be able to hold a short conversation about a close friend.

    By the end, you can…

    • say that a friend is always there for me using 一直在我身边.
    • say how many years I have been friends with someone using 我们是……年的朋友.
    • express that a friendship is important or that I cherish it using 重要 and 珍惜.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    她一直在我身边。

She is always there for me.

    Tā yìzhí zài wǒ shēnbiān.

Use 一直 (always, continuously) and 在我身边 (by my side) to describe ongoing emotional support. Works for any close friend.

    我们是多年的朋友。

We have been friends for many years.

Wǒmen shì duō nián de péngyou.

Literally 'we are many years of friends.' 多年 means 'many years.' This pattern states the duration of the friendship directly.

    他对我很重要。

He is very important to me.

    Tā duì wǒ hěn zhòngyào.

Use 对……很重要 to say someone or something is important to a person. 对 marks the person who feels the importance.

    我很珍惜我们的友谊。

    I really cherish our friendship.

Wǒ hěn zhēnxī wǒmen de yǒuyì.

珍惜 means to cherish or value deeply. 友谊 is a slightly formal word for friendship, good for sincere statements.

    我们认识十年了。

We have known each other for ten years.

    Wǒmen rènshi shí nián le.

认识 means to know (a person). The sentence-final 了 shows the duration has continued up to now. Replace 十年 with any number of years.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To say how long you have been friends, use: 我们 + 认识 + [number] + 年 + 了. For example, 我们认识五年了 (We have known each other for five years). You can also use 我们是 + [number] + 年的朋友, as in 我们是三年的朋友 (We have been friends for three years). Note that Chinese does not change verb forms for tense; time is shown by words like 了 or 多年. To say someone is always there for you, use 一直在我身边. For example, 我难过的时候,她一直在我身边 (When I am sad, she is always by my side).

    When to use it

Use these phrases when you want to describe a chosen bond, not a family relationship. For example, when introducing a close friend to someone, you can say 这是我最好的朋友,我们认识八年了 (This is my best friend; we have known each other for eight years). If you want to express value, say 他对我很重要 or 我很珍惜我们的友谊. Avoid using 家人 (family member) for a friend unless you mean they are like family. Also, 男朋友/女朋友 means romantic partner, not just a male or female friend; for a friend, use 男性朋友 or 女性朋友 if you need to specify gender.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你最好的朋友是谁?

Who is your best friend?Nǐ zuì hǎo de péngyou shì shéi?
    B

    我最好的朋友是小丽。我们认识十年了。

My best friend is Xiaoli. We have known each other for ten years.Wǒ zuì hǎo de péngyou shì Xiǎolì. Wǒmen rènshi shí nián le.
    A

    她对你怎么样?

How is she toward you?Tā duì nǐ zěnmeyàng?
    B

    她一直在我身边。我很珍惜我们的友谊。

She is always there for me. I really cherish our friendship.Tā yìzhí zài wǒ shēnbiān. Wǒ hěn zhēnxī wǒmen de yǒuyì.

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese conversations, friendship is often described through shared time and practical support rather than constant verbal declarations of affection. Saying 我们认识十年了 or 她一直在我身边 carries sincere warmth. The word 友谊 is slightly formal; in casual speech, people often just say 我们是好朋友 (we are good friends) or 我们关系很好 (we have a good relationship). Use 珍惜 to express that you value the bond, but avoid overusing it in everyday chat; it can sound a bit earnest. When referring to a close friend, 好朋友 is safe and common.

    One thing to watch for

Using 男朋友 or 女朋友 to mean a male or female friend.

Try this instead: In Mandarin, 男朋友 and 女朋友 usually mean boyfriend and girlfriend in a romantic sense. To say a male friend, use 男性朋友 (nánxìng péngyou) or 男的朋 友 (nán de péngyou); for a female friend, use 女性朋友 (nǚxìng péngyou) or 女的朋 友 (nǚ de péngyou). If you just mean a friend, say 朋友 (péngyou).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'We have been friends for eight years' using 认识?

    Show a sample answer

    我们认识八年了。

This uses 我们 + 认识 + 八年 + 了 to show duration up to now. You could also say 我们是八年的朋友, which is also correct but slightly less common in casual speech.

2Translate: 'She is always there for me.'

    Show a sample answer

    她一直在我身边。

一直 means 'always, continuously' and 在我身边 means 'by my side.' You could also say 她总是在我身边, but 一直 emphasizes ongoing support.

3How do you say 'He is very important to me'?

    Show a sample answer

    他对我很重要。

The pattern 对……很重要 marks the person who feels the importance. You could also say 他对我是很重要的, but the simpler form is more natural.

    Take this with you

Use 一直在我身边 for 'always there for me,' 我们认识……年了 for duration of friendship, and 对我很重要 or 珍惜 for expressing value. Remember that friendship is a chosen bond, so these phrases highlight time and support.
