How to Describe Personality in Mandarin Chinese: 他很外向 and 她有点儿害羞

Learn to describe people's character in Mandarin with 外向, 害羞 and 有点儿. Build simple sentences, compare two people, and avoid confusing personality with physical description.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

Describing what someone is like on the inside is one of the most useful things you can do in a new language. In Mandarin, you do not need the verb 'to be' for adjectives: 他很外向 already means 'He is outgoing.' This lesson focuses only on character, not height, hair or age. You will learn five core words and two patterns: 很 for a plain statement, and 有点儿 for 'a bit' when the trait is mildly negative. You will also learn how to compare two people with 比. Keep your tones steady, and remember that 是 is not used before these adjectives.

    By the end, you can…

    • describe someone's personality with 外向, 内向, 害羞, 热情 and 安静.
    • soften a description with 有点儿 and compare two people with 比.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    他很外向。

    He is outgoing.

    Tā hěn wàixiàng.

Use 很 before the adjective. Do not add 是: 他是外向 is wrong here.

    她有点儿害羞。

    She is a bit shy.

    Tā yǒudiǎnr hàixiū.

有点儿 softens a trait that is usually seen as a small weakness. It comes before the adjective.

    我妹妹很内向。

    My younger sister is introverted.

    Wǒ mèimei hěn nèixiàng.

内向 is the opposite of 外向. It is neutral, not an insult.

    他比我很热情。

He is warmer/more enthusiastic than me.

    Tā bǐ wǒ hěn rèqíng.

This pattern is not standard. See the common mistake section for the correct form. Note also that 热情 means 'warm, enthusiastic', not 'outgoing' (外向).

    我哥哥很安静。

    My older brother is quiet.

    Wǒ gēge hěn ānjìng.

安静 describes a calm, quiet character. It can also describe a room, so context matters.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

For a simple personality statement, use subject + 很 + adjective: 她很热情 (She is warm and friendly), 我弟弟很外向 (My younger brother is outgoing). The word 很 is not a strong 'very' here; it simply links the subject to the adjective. To say 'a bit', use 有点儿 before the adjective: 她有点儿害羞 (She is a bit shy), 他有点儿内向 (He is a bit introverted). To compare two people, use A + 比 + B + adjective: 他比我外向 (He is more outgoing than me). Do not put 很 after 比 in this pattern.

    When to use it

Use 外向 and 热情 for positive social traits, and 内向 or 安静 for calm, reserved people. 害羞 often suggests mild shyness and pairs naturally with 有点儿: 她有点儿害羞. If you want to be polite, avoid blunt negative labels; use 有点儿 to soften. When comparing, 比 is neutral: 我姐姐比我安静 (My older sister is quieter than me). If you are not sure whether a trait is positive or negative, a safe choice is 他性格很好 (He has a good personality), where 性格 means 'personality'.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你弟弟怎么样?

What is your younger brother like?Nǐ dìdi zěnmeyàng?
    B

    他很外向,也很热情。

He is very outgoing and also very warm.Tā hěn wàixiàng, yě hěn rèqíng.
    A

    我妹妹有点儿害羞,但是很安静。

My younger sister is a bit shy, but she is very quiet.Wǒ mèimei yǒudiǎnr hàixiū, dànshì hěn ānjìng.
    B

    你妹妹比你安静吗?

Is your younger sister quieter than you?Nǐ mèimei bǐ nǐ ānjìng ma?

A little context goes a long way

In Mandarin, personality descriptions often sound more natural with 性格 (personality) or 有点儿 for softening. Directly calling someone 害羞 is usually fine among friends, but in formal settings it is safer to say 她比较安静 (She is relatively quiet) or 她有点儿内向. Avoid using 内向 as a criticism; it is a neutral character word, not a medical or moral judgment.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 他比我很热情 to mean 'He is warmer/more enthusiastic than me.'

Try this instead: Do not use 很 after 比. Say 他比我热情 (Tā bǐ wǒ rèqíng). If you want to emphasize a big difference, use 他比我热情多了 (Tā bǐ wǒ rèqíng duō le).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'She is a bit shy' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    她有点儿害羞。

有点儿 comes before the adjective 害羞. 她害羞 also works, but it is more direct and less softened.

2Translate: 'My older brother is more outgoing than me.'

    Show a sample answer

    我哥哥比我外向。

The pattern is A + 比 + B + adjective. 我哥哥比我外向多了 is also correct if you want to stress a bigger difference.

3Which word means 'introverted', and how is it different from 'shy'?

    Show a sample answer

内向 means 'introverted'; 害羞 means 'shy'.

内向 describes a general reserved personality, while 害羞 often describes feeling shy in a specific moment. Both can appear with 有点儿.

    Take this with you

Use 很 + adjective for plain personality statements, 有点儿 to soften, and 比 for comparisons. Never add 是 before these adjectives, and never put 很 after 比.
