How to Describe Your Typical Day in Mandarin Chinese: Daily Routines with Time Expressions

Learn to say when you wake up, go to work, and do daily activities in Mandarin. Use time expressions with present simple to describe regular routines, not weekend plans.

Two friends sharing an evening conversation

In this lesson, you will learn to describe a typical day in Mandarin Chinese using simple present-tense sentences and time expressions. You will practice saying when you wake up, go to work, and do other regular activities. The focus is on habitual actions that happen every day, not on specific plans for the weekend. By the end, you will be able to string together a short description of your daily routine using common verbs and time words.

    By the end, you can…

    • say what time I wake up and go to work in Mandarin.
    • use time expressions like 'at 7 o'clock' and 'then' to sequence daily activities.
    • describe regular daily routines using present simple sentences.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    我七点起床。

    I wake up at 7 o'clock.

    wǒ qī diǎn qǐchuáng

Use this to state your regular wake-up time. The time expression comes before the verb.

    我七点半去上班。

I go to work at 7:30.

wǒ qī diǎn bàn qù shàngbān

Use '半' (bàn) for half past. '去上班' means 'go to work'.

    然后我吃早饭。

    Then I eat breakfast.

    ránhòu wǒ chī zǎofàn

'然后' (rán hòu) means 'then' and connects two actions in sequence.

    我八点开始工作。

    I start work at 8 o'clock.

    wǒ bā diǎn kāishǐ gōngzuò

Use '开始' (kāi shǐ) to say when you start an activity.

    我下午五点下班。

    I get off work at 5 p.m.

    wǒ xiàwǔ wǔ diǎn xiàbān

'下班' (xià bān) means 'get off work'. Use '下午' (xià wǔ) for afternoon.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

In Mandarin, time expressions come before the verb. The basic pattern is: Subject + Time + Verb + Object. For example, '我七点起床' (wǒ qī diǎn qǐchuáng) means 'I wake up at 7'. You can also use '然后' (ránhòu) to connect actions: '我七点起床,然后我七点半去上班' (I wake up at 7, then I go to work at 7:30). To say 'at' a specific time, simply put the time word before the verb without any preposition. For half past, use '半' (bàn): '七点半' (7:30). For a.m. and p.m., use '上午' (shàngwǔ) and '下午' (xiàwǔ) before the time.

    When to use it

Use these patterns to talk about habitual actions that happen regularly, such as every day or on weekdays. For example, '我每天七点起床' (wǒ měitiān qī diǎn qǐchuáng) means 'I wake up at 7 every day'. If you want to specify the day, add the day before the time: '我星期一七点起床' (I wake up at 7 on Monday). To ask about someone's routine, say '你几点起床?' (nǐ jǐ diǎn qǐchuáng? - What time do you wake up?). Note that Mandarin does not change verb forms for different subjects, so '起床' stays the same for 'I', 'you', 'he', etc.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你每天几点起床?

What time do you wake up every day?nǐ měitiān jǐ diǎn qǐchuáng?
    B

    我七点起床,然后七点半去上班。

I wake up at 7, then I go to work at 7:30.wǒ qī diǎn qǐchuáng, ránhòu qī diǎn bàn qù shàngbān.
    A

    你几点开始工作?

What time do you start work?nǐ jǐ diǎn kāishǐ gōngzuò?
    B

    我八点开始工作,下午五点下班。

I start work at 8, and get off work at 5 p.m.wǒ bā diǎn kāishǐ gōngzuò, xiàwǔ wǔ diǎn xiàbān.

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese workplaces, it is common to ask about daily routines as a friendly conversation starter. However, be mindful that work schedules can vary widely. When talking about your routine, using '每天' (every day) or '通常' (usually) helps clarify that you are describing a regular pattern, not a one-time plan. Avoid assuming that everyone follows the same schedule.

    One thing to watch for

Putting the time expression after the verb, as in English: '我起床七点' (wǒ qǐchuáng qī diǎn).

Try this instead: In Mandarin, time expressions come before the verb. Say '我七点起床' (wǒ qī diǎn qǐchuáng).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'I go to work at 7:30' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    我七点半去上班。

This answer uses the correct word order: subject (我) + time (七点半) + verb (去上班). You could also say '我七点三十分去上班', but '半' is more common in everyday speech.

    2What does '然后我吃早饭' mean?

    Show a sample answer

    Then I eat breakfast.

'然后' means 'then', '我' means 'I', '吃' means 'eat', and '早饭' means 'breakfast'. This sentence connects a previous action to eating breakfast.

    3Translate: 'I start work at 8 o'clock.'

    Show a sample answer

    我八点开始工作。

The time expression '八点' comes before the verb '开始工作'. You could also say '我八点开始上班', which is similar but slightly more specific to going to work.

    Take this with you

Remember: time expressions come before the verb in Mandarin. Use '然后' to sequence actions, and keep verbs the same for all subjects. Practice describing your own daily routine to reinforce these patterns.
