Mandarin Chinese for Urban Sketchers: Suggesting What to Draw and Where
Learn to suggest a shared sketching subject in Mandarin Chinese using 画什么, 一起画, and 那个角落. This situational lesson helps you collaborate naturally at urban sketching meetups.

At a sketching meetup, the group often needs to agree on a subject before anyone starts drawing. In Mandarin Chinese, you can steer that conversation with a few simple patterns. The core question is 画什么? (huà shénme?) — literally 'draw what?' — which asks what to draw. To propose drawing together, use 一起画 (yìqǐ huà), meaning 'draw together'. To point out a specific spot, say 那个角落 (nàge jiǎoluò), 'that corner'. This lesson teaches you to combine these into natural, collaborative suggestions. You will practice asking for ideas, proposing a subject, and agreeing or adjusting as a group. The register is friendly and cooperative, typical of urban sketching meetups where people share a location but choose their own focus. No prior grammar beyond basic pronouns and verbs is needed. By the end, you will be able to initiate and respond to suggestions about what to sketch, and you will know how to ask staff simple questions about where you may sit or stand.
By the end, you can…
- ask what to draw using 画什么.
- suggest drawing together with 一起画.
- point out a specific spot with 那个角落.
- agree or gently adjust a sketching suggestion.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

画什么?
What should we draw?
huà shénme?
Use this open question to start the decision. It is neutral and collaborative, not demanding.
一起画那个角落,好吗?
Let's draw that corner together, okay?
yìqǐ huà nàge jiǎoluò, hǎo ma?
A polite suggestion that includes 一起画 and 那个角落. The tag 好吗? invites agreement.
我想画那个角落。
I want to draw that corner.
wǒ xiǎng huà nàge jiǎoluò.
States your own preference without pressuring others. Useful when you have a clear subject in mind.
我们画什么?
What shall we draw?
wǒmen huà shénme?
Adds 我们 (we) to make the question explicitly about the group's shared subject.
那个角落怎么样?
How about that corner?
nàge jiǎoluò zěnmeyàng?
A soft proposal. 怎么样? asks for opinion and leaves room for other ideas.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The pattern 一起画 + place means 'draw (place) together'. For example, 一起画那个角落 (yìqǐ huà nàge jiǎoluò) means 'draw that corner together'. You can replace 那个角落 with other places: 一起画这个公园 (yìqǐ huà zhège gōngyuán) 'draw this park together', or 一起画那栋楼 (yìqǐ huà nà dòng lóu) 'draw that building together'. To ask what to draw, use 画什么? (huà shénme?). To make it a group question, say 我们画什么? (wǒmen huà shénme?). These patterns are flexible and do not require changing verb endings.
When to use it
Use 画什么? when the group has arrived at a location but has not chosen a subject. Use 一起画 when you want to propose that everyone draw the same thing, which is common at urban sketching meetups for a shared focus. Use 那个角落 when you point to a specific corner you can see. If you prefer a different spot, you can say 我想画那个角落 (wǒ xiǎng huà nàge jiǎoluò) 'I want to draw that corner' and then ask 你们呢? (nǐmen ne?) 'and you all?'. This keeps the tone collaborative. Avoid using 一起画 if you mean 'draw at the same time but different subjects' — for that, just say 我们在这里画 (wǒmen zài zhèlǐ huà) 'we draw here'.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
我们到了。画什么?
We've arrived. What should we draw?wǒmen dào le. huà shénme?那个角落怎么样?有老房子。
How about that corner? There are old houses.nàge jiǎoluò zěnmeyàng? yǒu lǎo fángzi.好,一起画那个角落,好吗?
Okay, let's draw that corner together, shall we?hǎo, yìqǐ huà nàge jiǎoluò, hǎo ma?好啊。我去那边坐。
Sure. I'll go sit over there.hǎo a. wǒ qù nàbiān zuò.A little context goes a long way
At urban sketching meetups in Chinese-speaking cities, decisions are often made quickly and informally. A direct question like 画什么? is normal and not rude. Using 好吗? or 怎么样? softens a suggestion and shows you value others' input. If you are a guest at a venue, it is polite to ask staff before settling in. You can say 请问,我们可以在这里画画吗? (qǐngwèn, wǒmen kěyǐ zài zhèlǐ huà huà ma?) 'Excuse me, may we draw here?' Staff may point you to a suitable area, but policies vary by location, so ask rather than assume.
One thing to watch for
Saying 画什么? with a falling, abrupt tone that sounds like a challenge, or using 一起画 to mean 'draw the same thing at the same time' when you actually mean 'draw together in the same place'.
Try this instead: Keep 画什么? light and rising. For 'draw together in the same place', say 我们在这里一起画 (wǒmen zài zhèlǐ yìqǐ huà) 'we draw together here'. If you mean 'draw the same subject', use 一起画那个角落 (yìqǐ huà nàge jiǎoluò).
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you ask 'What should we draw?' in Mandarin?
Show a sample answer
我们画什么?
This adds 我们 (we) to 画什么? to make it a group question. 画什么? alone is also correct and commonly used.
2You want to suggest drawing that corner together. What do you say?
Show a sample answer
一起画那个角落,好吗?
This combines 一起画 (draw together) and 那个角落 (that corner) with 好吗? to invite agreement. You could also say 那个角落怎么样?
3How do you politely ask staff if you can draw at the venue?
Show a sample answer
请问,我们可以在这里画画吗?
This uses 请问 to politely get attention and 可以...吗? to ask permission. Actual policies vary, so asking is appropriate.
Use 画什么? to ask what to draw, 一起画 to propose drawing together, and 那个角落 to point out a specific spot. Keep suggestions soft with 好吗? or 怎么样?, and ask staff before settling in.
