The most common are deflecting with 哪里哪里 (nǎlǐ nǎlǐ) or 过奖了 (guòjiǎng le), accepting with 谢谢 (xièxie), or returning the compliment. The two most common deflection patterns are 哪里哪里 and 过奖了. 哪里哪里 literally asks 'where?', but in this context it means 'not at all'. Example: A: 你的中文说得真好。 B: 哪里哪里。 过奖了 is more formal and often used when the compliment feels exaggerated. Example: A: 你的中文太棒了。 B: 过奖了，我还在学习。 To accept, use 谢谢 plus a modest follow-up: 谢谢，我还在学。 You can also return the compliment: 谢谢，你的英文也很好。 This keeps the exchange friendly and balanced.
When to use it
Use 哪里哪里 with acquaintances, colleagues, or strangers who offer a casual compliment. It may sound slightly traditional to some younger urban speakers, but it is never rude. Use 过奖了 in more formal settings, such as when a teacher, senior colleague, or client praises you. Use 谢谢，我还在学 when you want to accept the compliment without sounding arrogant. If the compliment is about your Chinese and you genuinely feel it is not good yet, 哪里，还差得远呢 is appropriate. Avoid using 哪里哪里 in very informal settings with close friends—they might find it overly modest. In those cases, a simple 谢谢 or 谢谢，你太客气了 works well.

The key is to match the formality of the situation: use 过奖了 with seniors or in professional settings, and 谢谢 with peers. Avoid over-deflecting, which can seem insincere.
One thing to watch for
Responding to a compliment with 不 or 不是 to deny it directly, as in 不，我的中文不好.
Try this instead: A direct denial can sound abrupt or overly self-critical. Instead, use a modest deflection like 哪里哪里 or 过奖了, or accept with 谢谢，我还在学. Example: A: 你的中文很好。 B: 哪里哪里，我还在学。 This is softer and more natural.
