For deflecting, use 哪里哪里 (nǎlǐ nǎlǐ) or 没有没有 (méiyǒu méiyǒu) before a modest phrase. 哪里哪里 is more traditional and formal, while 没有没有 is common in everyday speech. To return a compliment, add 你也是 (nǐ yě shì) or 你太客气了 (nǐ tài kèqi le). These patterns are fixed and easy to remember.
When to use it
Use direct acceptance like 谢谢，我很高兴 with friends, peers, or people who value straightforwardness. Use humble deflection like 哪里哪里，您过奖了 with teachers, elders, or in formal business settings. However, younger speakers and casual friends often accept compliments with a simple 谢谢. Pay attention to the other person's age, status, and your relationship. When in doubt, a light deflection followed by a return compliment is usually safe and friendly.

Using 哪里哪里 with close friends in a casual setting, which can sound stiff or overly formal.
Try this instead: With close friends, a simple 谢谢，我很高兴 (Xièxie, wǒ hěn gāoxìng) or 谢谢，你也是 (Xièxie, nǐ yě shì) sounds more natural. Save 哪里哪里，您过奖了 for formal or respectful situations.
