You can also put the reason first: 路上堵车，所以我迟到了。 (lù shang dǔ chē, suǒ yǐ wǒ chí dào le) 'There was a traffic jam, so I was late.' The word 所以 (suǒ yǐ) means 'so' or 'therefore'. Keep the reason short and true. Common reasons are 堵车 (dǔ chē) 'traffic jam', 地铁晚点 (dì tiě wǎn diǎn) 'the subway was delayed', and 临时有事 (lín shí yǒu shì) 'something came up at the last minute'.
When to use it
Choose your apology by relationship and setting. With friends, 不好意思，让你久等了。 (bù hǎo yì si, ràng nǐ jiǔ děng le) is warm and enough. With a boss or client, use 非常抱歉 (fēi cháng bào qiàn) or 真抱歉 (zhēn bào qiàn) and add a clear reason: 非常抱歉，我来晚了，路上堵车。 (fēi cháng bào qiàn, wǒ lái wǎn le, lù shang dǔ chē) 'I'm very sorry I'm late, there was a traffic jam.'
