Reading a Parcel Locker SMS in Chinese: Pickup Codes, Locker Numbers, and Gate Locations
Learn to parse a typical Chinese parcel locker SMS: tell 取件码 from 运单号, find the locker and gate, read digits aloud, and confirm the pickup window with staff.

A parcel locker SMS in mainland China is short and dense: it usually contains a pickup code, a tracking number, a locker number, a gate or location, and a deadline. The goal of this lesson is not to translate every character, but to scan the message in the right order and act. First, find 取件码 (qǔjiàn mǎ), the pickup code you type or scan at the locker. Do not confuse it with 运单号 (yùndān hào), the tracking number used by the courier company; that number is usually longer and is not what the locker asks for. Next, look for the locker number and the gate: 柜机号 (guìjī hào) or 柜号 (guì hào) tells you which machine, and 门 (mén) or 出入口 (chūrùkǒu) tells you where it is. Brand names such as 丰巢 (Fēngcháo) and 菜鸟 (Càiniǎo) often appear as the sender or platform, but they are not the code itself. Finally, check the pickup window: 取件时间 (qǔjiàn shíjiān) or 前 (qián) before a time tells you the deadline. This lesson gives you reusable patterns, a short dialogue, and practice reading the digits aloud so you can handle the message without guessing.
By the end, you can…
- find the 取件码 in a locker SMS and distinguish it from the 运单号.
- extract the locker number and gate or location from the message.
- read a pickup code digit by digit in Mandarin.
- ask staff to confirm the pickup window and location.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Useful pattern
A common SMS pattern is: 您的取件码是 123456,请到 3 号柜机,东门,24 点前取件。The key is to read it in chunks. 您的取件码是 (nín de qǔ jiàn mǎ shì) means 'your pickup code is'. 请到 (qǐng dào) means 'please go to'. 3 号柜机 (sān hào guì jī) means 'locker machine number 3'. 东门 (dōng mén) means 'east gate'. 前 (qián) after a time means 'before'. So 24 点前 means 'before 24:00'. Another pattern is 取件码 123456,运单号 9876543210. Here the first number is short and is the pickup code; the second is longer and is the tracking number. If you see 丰巢 or 菜鸟, they are platform names, not codes. Read the digits one by one: 一 (yī), 二 (èr), 三 (sān), 四 (sì), 五 (wǔ), 六 (liù), 七 (qī), 八 (bā), 九 (jiǔ), 零 (líng). For 123456, say yī èr sān sì wǔ liù.
When to use it
Use these patterns when you are standing at the locker and the screen asks for a code, or when you are on the phone with staff. If the SMS says 请到 3 号柜机,东门, you can ask 三号柜机在哪儿? (sān hào guì jī zài nǎr?) meaning 'Where is locker machine number 3?' If the message says 24 点前取件, you can confirm with 是今天晚上 24 点前吗? (shì jīn tiān wǎn shang èr shí sì diǎn qián ma?) meaning 'Is it before 24:00 tonight?' When you call staff, start with 你好,我的取件码是 123456 (nǐ hǎo, wǒ de qǔ jiàn mǎ shì yī èr sān sì wǔ liù). Then ask 请问柜机号是多少? (qǐng wèn guì jī hào shì duō shao?) meaning 'May I ask what the locker number is?' Keep your questions short and repeat the digits slowly. Do not assume the tracking number works at the locker; use the pickup code.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
你好,我的取件码是 123456,请问柜机号是多少?
Hello, my pickup code is 123456. May I ask what the locker number is?nǐ hǎo, wǒ de qǔ jiàn mǎ shì yī èr sān sì wǔ liù, qǐng wèn guì jī hào shì duō shao?三号柜机,在东门旁边。取件时间到今晚 24 点。
Locker machine number 3, next to the east gate. Pickup is until 24:00 tonight.sān hào guì jī, zài dōng mén páng biān. qǔ jiàn shí jiān dào jīn wǎn èr shí sì diǎn.好的,运单号需要吗?
Okay, do you need the tracking number?hǎo de, yùn dān hào xū yào ma?不用,输入取件码就行。
No need, just enter the pickup code.bú yòng, shū rù qǔ jiàn mǎ jiù xíng.A little context goes a long way
In mainland China, locker SMS messages are usually automated and very brief. 丰巢 and 菜鸟 are common platform names you may see, but the message itself is not a personal note. Staff at a service desk may speak quickly; it is normal to ask them to repeat the code slowly. Use 请问 (qǐng wèn) to soften a question, and 谢谢 (xiè xie) when you finish. Avoid treating the tracking number as a pickup code; the locker screen will reject it.
One thing to watch for
Using the 运单号 (tracking number) as the 取件码 (pickup code) at the locker.
Try this instead: The pickup code is usually a short 6-digit number, while the tracking number is longer. For example, in 取件码 123456,运单号 9876543210, enter 123456 at the locker, not 9876543210. If the screen rejects it, check the SMS again for 取件码.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1In the SMS '您的取件码是 654321,请到 2 号柜机,西门,22 点前取件', what is the pickup code?
Show a sample answer
654321
The phrase 取件码是 directly introduces the pickup code. 2 号柜机 is the locker number, 西门 is the west gate, and 22 点前 is the deadline. A valid alternative is to read it as liù wǔ sì sān èr yī.
2How would you ask staff to repeat the pickup code politely?
Show a sample answer
请再说一遍取件码,谢谢。
This uses 请 (please) and 再说一遍 (say again). You can also say 麻烦再说一遍取件码 (má fan zài shuō yí biàn qǔ jiàn mǎ), which is equally polite in casual speech.
3What does 24 点前 mean in a pickup SMS?
Show a sample answer
Before 24:00, meaning before midnight.
前 after a time means 'before'. In context, it tells you the pickup window ends at midnight. Some messages may say 24 点前 or 23:59 前; both indicate the deadline.
Scan the SMS for 取件码 first, then the locker number and gate, then the deadline. Read the code digit by digit, and ask staff to repeat if needed. Do not use the 运单号 at the locker.
