Planning a Day Trip in Mandarin: Asking What to See and Sorting Out Logistics
Learn Mandarin phrases for planning a day trip: asking what to see, checking times, tickets, and transport, plus a short planning conversation.

This lesson focuses on one practical task: planning a day trip in Mandarin. You will learn how to ask what is worth seeing, how to check opening hours and ticket prices, and how to talk about transport and return times. The key pattern is 应该 (yīnggāi, should) plus a verb, which lets you ask for and give suggestions politely. You will also practice 怎么 (zěnme, how) for asking about routes and methods. All examples use simplified Chinese and pinyin with tone marks. Work through the phrases, then read the dialogue aloud. The goal is not to memorize a script, but to handle the small decisions that make a day trip work: what to see, when to go, how to get there, and when to come back.
By the end, you can…
- ask what we should see on a day trip using 应该.
- ask about opening hours, ticket prices, and transport in Mandarin.
- suggest a simple day-trip plan and agree on a return time.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

zhège dìfang jǐ diǎn kāimén?
几点 asks for a clock time. 开门 means to open; 关门 means to close.
门票多少钱?
How much is the ticket?
ménpiào duōshao qián?
门票 is an admission ticket. 多少钱 is the standard way to ask a price.
怎么去最方便?
What is the most convenient way to get there?
zěnme qù zuì fāngbiàn?
怎么 asks how. 最方便 means most convenient, useful when comparing bus, metro, or taxi.
我们几点回来?
What time should we come back?
wǒmen jǐ diǎn huílái?
Use this to agree on a return time before you leave, so the day trip stays manageable.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The pattern 应该 + verb means should do something. It is very useful for planning because it asks for or gives advice without sounding too direct. For example, 我们应该早点儿出发 (wǒmen yīnggāi zǎodiǎnr chūfā) means we should set off a bit early. 一日游应该看什么? uses 应该 to ask what is worth seeing. To answer, you can say 应该先看博物馆 (yīnggāi xiān kàn bówùguǎn), we should see the museum first. You can also use 可以 (kěyǐ, can) for options: 我们可以坐地铁去 (wǒmen kěyǐ zuò dìtiě qù), we can take the metro. 应该 is for advice; 可以 is for a possible choice.
When to use it
Use 应该 when you want a recommendation or want to sound polite rather than demanding. If you ask 看什么? alone, it can sound abrupt; 应该看什么? sounds like you are asking for advice. Use 几点 for clock times: 几点开门? (what time does it open?), 几点回来? (what time do we come back?). Use 怎么 for method or route: 怎么去? (how do we get there?), 怎么走? (how do we walk there?). Before a day trip, confirm three things: opening time, ticket price, and return time. A natural sequence is 这个地方几点开门?门票多少钱?怎么去最方便? Then agree: 我们五点回来,好吗? (wǒmen wǔ diǎn huílái, hǎo ma?), Let's come back at five, okay?
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
明天我们一日游应该看什么?
What should we see on our day trip tomorrow?míngtiān wǒmen yī rì yóu yīnggāi kàn shénme?应该先去老城,然后看博物馆。
We should go to the old town first, then see the museum.yīnggāi xiān qù lǎochéng, ránhòu kàn bówùguǎn.博物馆几点开门?门票多少钱?
What time does the museum open? How much is the ticket?bówùguǎn jǐ diǎn kāimén? ménpiào duōshao qián?九点开门,门票三十块。我们怎么去最方便?
It opens at nine, and the ticket is thirty yuan. What is the most convenient way to get there?jiǔ diǎn kāimén, ménpiào sānshí kuài. wǒmen zěnme qù zuì fāngbiàn?A little context goes a long way
In mainland China, 块 (kuài) is the common spoken word for yuan, while 元 (yuán) is more formal and appears on signs and receipts. Prices and opening hours can change, especially on Mondays when many museums close, so it is normal to confirm by phone or an official account before going. When making a plan with friends, proposing a return time with 好吗? (hǎo ma?) is a polite way to check agreement rather than announcing a decision.
One thing to watch for
Using 什么时候开门? when you want a specific clock time, or answering 八点开门 when the question was 几点开门?
Try this instead: Use 几点 for a clock time: 博物馆几点开门? (bówùguǎn jǐ diǎn kāimén?), What time does the museum open? 什么时候 is broader and can mean what day or what period, so it is less precise for a day-trip schedule. Answer with a time: 九点开门 (jiǔ diǎn kāimén), It opens at nine.
Your turn

Show a sample answer
博物馆几点开门?门票多少钱?
几点开门 asks for the opening clock time, and 门票多少钱 asks the price. 多少钱 is the standard price question. In some regions you may hear 票价 instead of 门票, but both are understood.
3Suggest going by metro and agree to come back at six.
Show a sample answer
我们可以坐地铁去。我们六点回来,好吗?
可以 introduces a possible option, and 坐地铁去 means go by metro. 我们六点回来,好吗? proposes a return time and checks agreement with 好吗. You could also say 六点回来行吗? with a similar polite meaning.
For a smooth day trip in Mandarin, confirm three things before you go: 几点开门, 门票多少钱, and 几点回来. Use 应该 for advice and 可以 for options.
