Persuading in Mandarin: Leading with 'I think we should...'

Learn to use 我觉得我们应该…因为… to propose ideas and build consensus in Mandarin. This lesson teaches the grammar, tone, and strategies for leading a group toward agreement.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

In Mandarin, persuading others is not just about stating your opinion; it is about guiding the group toward a shared decision. The pattern 我觉得我们应该…因为… ('I think we should... because...') is a powerful tool for leading a discussion and building consensus. Unlike negotiating a compromise, which often involves concessions, this approach emphasizes your reasoning and invites others to see the logic. In this lesson, you will learn how to use this pattern effectively, with appropriate softeners and follow-up questions, to persuade without sounding pushy. We will focus on the grammar, intonation, and cultural nuances that make your proposal more acceptable in Chinese contexts.

    By the end, you can…

    • use 我觉得我们应该…因为… to propose a course of action and give reasons.
    • soften a proposal with 吧 or 怎么样 to invite agreement.
    • respond to counterarguments and build consensus in a group discussion.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    我觉得我们应该先试试看。

I think we should try it first.

Wǒ juéde wǒmen yīnggāi xiān shìshi kàn.

Use this to propose a tentative action. 试试看 means 'try and see', which sounds open-minded. Note that 应该 (yīnggāi) already conveys 'should', so 我觉得我们应该… is a fairly direct proposal; soften it with 吧 or 怎么样 when you want to invite agreement.

    因为这样更省时间。

    Because this saves more time.

    Yīnwèi zhèyàng gèng shěng shíjiān.

Give a clear reason after 因为. 更 means 'more', highlighting the benefit.

    大家觉得怎么样?

    What does everyone think?

    Dàjiā juéde zěnmeyàng?

Invite others' opinions to build consensus. 怎么样 is a neutral way to ask for feedback.

    我们能不能考虑一下这个方案?

    Can we consider this plan?

Wǒmen néng bu néng kǎolǜ yīxià zhège fāng'àn?

Use 能不能 to make a polite suggestion. 考虑一下 means 'consider a bit', softening the request. 方案 (fāng'àn) means 'plan' or 'proposal'.

    我同意你的看法,不过我们也可以…

I agree with your view, but we could also...

Wǒ tóngyì nǐ de kànfǎ, bùguò wǒmen yě kěyǐ...

Acknowledge agreement first, then gently introduce an alternative. 不过 is a soft 'but'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is 我觉得我们应该 + [action] + 因为 + [reason]. For example, 我觉得我们应该早点出发,因为路上可能会堵车。('I think we should leave early because there might be traffic.') You can also use 我觉得我们可以 instead of 应该 to sound less forceful. To invite agreement, add 吧 at the end: 我觉得我们应该试试吧。('I think we should try it, right?') Another variation is to use 要不要…? to propose: 我们要不要换个方法?('Shall we change the method?') This pattern is common in meetings and group decisions.

    When to use it

Use this pattern when you want to lead a group toward a decision without being authoritarian. It works well in team meetings, family discussions, or planning with friends. For instance, if you want to suggest a restaurant, say 我觉得我们应该去吃火锅,因为大家都喜欢。('I think we should go eat hotpot because everyone likes it.') If someone disagrees, respond with 我明白你的意思,不过… to acknowledge their point before countering. Avoid using 应该 if you are not in a position to suggest; instead, use 可以 or 要不要 to sound more collaborative. In formal settings, you might say 我建议我们可以… ('I suggest we could...') to be more polite.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    我觉得我们应该这个周末去爬山,因为天气很好。

I think we should go hiking this weekend because the weather is nice.Wǒ juéde wǒmen yīnggāi zhège zhōumò qù páshān, yīnwèi tiānqì hěn hǎo.
    B

    爬山听起来不错,但是我有点担心时间不够。

Hiking sounds good, but I'm a bit worried we don't have enough time.Páshān tīng qǐlái bùcuò, dànshì wǒ yǒudiǎn dānxīn shíjiān bù gòu.
    A

    我明白你的担心。我们可以早点出发,这样时间就充足了。大家觉得怎么样?

I understand your concern. We can leave earlier so we have enough time. What does everyone think?Wǒ míngbai nǐ de dānxīn. Wǒmen kěyǐ zǎo diǎn chūfā, zhèyàng shíjiān jiù chōngzú le. Dàjiā juéde zěnmeyàng?
    B

    那好吧,我同意。早点出发是个好主意。

Alright then, I agree. Leaving earlier is a good idea.Nà hǎo ba, wǒ tóngyì. Zǎo diǎn chūfā shì ge hǎo zhǔyi.

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese communication, directly stating 'I think we should' can sometimes sound assertive. To build consensus, it's common to soften proposals with 吧, 怎么样, or 好不好, and to invite others' input with 大家觉得呢? Additionally, showing respect for others' opinions by saying 我明白你的意思 before disagreeing helps maintain harmony. In more formal contexts, using 建议 instead of 觉得 can sound more polite and professional.

    One thing to watch for

Learners often say 我觉得我们应该… because they think it's a direct translation of 'I think we should...' and use it in all situations, even when talking to superiors or in very formal settings, which can sound too blunt.

Try this instead: In formal or hierarchical situations, soften the proposal. Instead of 我觉得我们应该…, say 我建议我们可以… ('I suggest we could...') or 要不要考虑…? ('Shall we consider...?'). For example, to a boss: 我建议我们可以先做一个试点项目。('I suggest we could do a pilot project first.') This shows respect and invites agreement rather than demanding it.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you propose having a meeting tomorrow instead of today, giving a reason?

    Show a sample answer

    我觉得我们应该明天开会,因为今天大家都很忙。

This uses the target pattern with a clear reason. You could also say 我们可以明天开会吗?因为今天大家都很忙。 which is more of a question, but still persuasive.

2What phrase can you add to 我觉得我们应该试试 to make it sound more like inviting agreement?

    Show a sample answer

    吧

Adding 吧 at the end, as in 我觉得我们应该试试吧, turns the statement into a suggestion seeking agreement. Other options like 怎么样 also work, but 吧 is the most common softener.

3If a colleague disagrees with your proposal, how can you acknowledge their point before countering?

    Show a sample answer

    我明白你的意思,不过…

This phrase shows you have listened and then allows you to present your counterargument. You could also say 你说得对,但是… to similar effect.

    Take this with you

To persuade in Mandarin, lead with 我觉得我们应该…因为…, but soften with 吧 or 怎么样 and invite others' views. Acknowledge disagreement before countering to build consensus.
