Mandarin Chinese: Ask and Answer "Where Are You From?" in Casual Travel Talk
Learn to ask 你是哪国人? and respond naturally with 我是…人, plus follow-up questions about hometown and travel. Includes pinyin, tone marks, and cultural tips for casual conversation.

When you meet someone while traveling in a Chinese-speaking region, one of the first questions you'll hear is 你是哪国人? (Nǐ shì nǎ guó rén?) — "Which country are you from?" This lesson teaches you to ask and answer that question naturally, then keep the small talk going with follow-ups about hometown and travel. You'll practice the key pattern 我是…人 (Wǒ shì … rén), learn how to soften questions with 请问 (qǐngwèn), and pick up casual responses like 我是美国人 (Wǒ shì Měiguó rén). The focus is on real, spoken Mandarin for friendly travel chats, not formal self-introductions. By the end, you'll be able to handle the first few turns of a conversation with confidence.
By the end, you can…
- ask someone which country they are from using 你是哪国人?
- answer with 我是…人 and name my country in Mandarin.
- ask and answer a follow-up about hometown using 你老家在哪儿?
- use 请问 to politely open a question with a stranger.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

你是哪国人?
Which country are you from?
nǐ shì nǎ guó rén?
The most common casual way to ask someone's nationality. Use with people you've just met; it's direct but friendly.
我是美国人。
I'm American.
wǒ shì Měiguó rén.
Replace 美国 with your country: 英国 (Yīngguó, UK), 加拿大 (Jiānádà, Canada), 澳大利亚 (Àodàlìyà, Australia).
你老家在哪儿?
Where is your hometown?
nǐ lǎojiā zài nǎr?
A warm follow-up after nationality. 老家 means your family's home region or where you grew up, not necessarily where you live now.
我是来旅游的。
I'm here for travel.
wǒ shì lái lǚyóu de.
Use this to explain why you're in the city. It invites the other person to share their own travel plans.
请问,你是哪国人?
Excuse me, which country are you from?
qǐngwèn, nǐ shì nǎ guó rén?
Add 请问 when approaching a stranger. It softens the question and shows politeness.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Useful pattern
The core pattern is 我是 + country + 人 (Wǒ shì + country + rén). For example: 我是中国人 (Wǒ shì Zhōngguó rén) — I'm Chinese; 我是法国人 (Wǒ shì Fǎguó rén) — I'm French. To ask, swap 我 for 你 and add 哪: 你是哪国人? (Nǐ shì nǎ guó rén?). Note that 哪 (nǎ) means "which," so the question literally asks "which country person." You can also ask 你从哪儿来? (Nǐ cóng nǎr lái?) — Where do you come from? — but 你是哪国人? is more common for nationality.
When to use it
Use 你是哪国人? in casual settings: hostels, tours, cafés, or when a local strikes up a conversation. It's direct but not rude. If you want to be extra polite, start with 请问 (qǐngwèn). For a softer, more open question, try 你是从哪里来的? (Nǐ shì cóng nǎlǐ lái de?) — Where are you from? — which can refer to city or country. Avoid asking 你是什么人? (Nǐ shì shénme rén?) — it can sound like "What kind of person are you?" and may offend.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
你好!请问,你是哪国人?
Hello! Excuse me, which country are you from?nǐ hǎo! qǐngwèn, nǐ shì nǎ guó rén?我是美国人。你呢?
I'm American. And you?wǒ shì Měiguó rén. nǐ ne?我是加拿大人。你老家在哪儿?
I'm Canadian. Where is your hometown?wǒ shì Jiānádà rén. nǐ lǎojiā zài nǎr?我老家在芝加哥。我是来旅游的。
My hometown is Chicago. I'm here for travel.wǒ lǎojiā zài Zhījiāgē. wǒ shì lái lǚyóu de.A little context goes a long way
In casual Mandarin conversation, asking 你是哪国人? is normal and friendly, but it's best to use 请问 with strangers or in formal settings. Chinese speakers often follow up with 你老家在哪儿? to show interest in your background. Note that 老家 refers to your family's ancestral or childhood home, not your current city. If you're from a country with a large Chinese diaspora, you might be asked 你是华人吗? (Nǐ shì Huárén ma?) — Are you ethnically Chinese? — which is usually curious, not hostile. Respond simply and honestly.
One thing to watch for
Answering with 我是美国 (Wǒ shì Měiguó) without 人.
Try this instead: Always add 人 when stating nationality: 我是美国人 (Wǒ shì Měiguó rén). Without 人, 我是美国 sounds incomplete, like saying "I am America." The pattern is 我是 + country + 人.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you ask a new acquaintance which country they are from, politely?
Show a sample answer
请问,你是哪国人? (Qǐngwèn, nǐ shì nǎ guó rén?)
This uses 请问 to soften the question and 你是哪国人? for nationality. You could also say 你是从哪个国家来的?, which is equally correct but slightly longer.
2Someone asks 你是哪国人? and you are from Australia. What do you say?
Show a sample answer
我是澳大利亚人。 (Wǒ shì Àodàlìyà rén.)
This follows the 我是 + country + 人 pattern. You can shorten 澳大利亚 to 澳洲 (Àozhōu) in casual speech: 我是澳洲人。 Both are acceptable.
3How do you ask where someone's hometown is?
Show a sample answer
你老家在哪儿? (Nǐ lǎojiā zài nǎr?)
This uses 老家 for hometown and 在哪儿 for "where." In northern China, you may hear 你老家在哪儿?; in some southern regions, 你老家在哪里? is also common.
Use 你是哪国人? to ask nationality and 我是…人 to answer. Add 请问 for politeness, and follow up with 你老家在哪儿? to keep the travel chat going.
