Comparing Transport in Mandarin: "Should I take the train or bus?"
Learn to compare transport options in Mandarin using 坐, 还是, 比较, and 方便. Practice asking "Should I take the train or bus?" and discussing pros and cons with a friend.

When you need to get somewhere in a Chinese-speaking city, you often have to choose between the train and the bus. In this lesson, you will learn how to ask "Should I take the train or bus?" and how to compare the two options in natural Mandarin. The key patterns are 坐 (zuò, to take a vehicle), 还是 (háishì, or in a choice question), and comparison phrases like 比较快 (bǐjiào kuài, relatively fast) and 方便 (fāngbiàn, convenient). You will also learn to ask for and give reasons using 因为 (yīnwèi, because) and 所以 (suǒyǐ, so). By the end, you will be able to have a short conversation about which transport is better for a specific trip, using intermediate-level vocabulary and polite question forms.
By the end, you can…
- ask whether to take the train or the bus using 坐火车还是坐公交车.
- compare two transport options using 比较 and 方便.
- give a simple reason for choosing one option using 因为...所以...
- understand and respond to a friend's suggestion about transport.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

我应该坐火车还是坐公交车?
Should I take the train or the bus?
Wǒ yīnggāi zuò huǒchē háishì zuò gōngjiāochē?
Use this when you are deciding between two options. 还是 is used in questions, not in statements.
坐火车比较快。
Taking the train is relatively fast.
Zuò huǒchē bǐjiào kuài.
比较 softens the comparison, meaning 'relatively' or 'fairly'. It is common in spoken Mandarin.
坐公交车比较方便。
Taking the bus is more convenient.
Zuò gōngjiāochē bǐjiào fāngbiàn.
方便 means convenient. Use it to talk about ease of access, not speed.
因为火车不堵车,所以比较快。
Because the train doesn't get stuck in traffic, it's relatively fast.
Yīnwèi huǒchē bù dǔchē, suǒyǐ bǐjiào kuài.
堵车 means traffic jam. This pattern gives a reason and a result.
你觉得哪个更好?
Which one do you think is better?
Nǐ juéde nǎge gèng hǎo?
Use 更 for 'even more' when comparing two things. 哪个 means 'which one'.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
To ask a choice question between two options, use 'A 还是 B?'. For example, 你坐火车还是坐公交车? (Nǐ zuò huǒchē háishì zuò gōngjiāochē?) means 'Are you taking the train or the bus?' In statements, use 或者 (huòzhě) instead of 还是. For example, 我可以坐火车或者坐公交车 (Wǒ kěyǐ zuò huǒchē huòzhě zuò gōngjiāochē) means 'I can take the train or the bus.' Remember: 还是 is only for questions. To compare, use 比较 + adjective, e.g., 比较快 (relatively fast), 比较便宜 (relatively cheap). To say 'more' than something else, use 更 + adjective, e.g., 更快 (faster).
When to use it
Use these patterns when you are planning a trip and want to discuss options with someone. For example, if you are in a hurry, you might say 我应该坐火车还是坐公交车?坐火车比较快,但是比较贵。 (Wǒ yīnggāi zuò huǒchē háishì zuò gōngjiāochē? Zuò huǒchē bǐjiào kuài, dànshì bǐjiào guì.) meaning 'Should I take the train or the bus? The train is relatively fast, but relatively expensive.' Use 因为...所以... to explain your choice: 因为公交车便宜,所以我坐公交车。 (Yīnwèi gōngjiāochē piányi, suǒyǐ wǒ zuò gōngjiāochē.) 'Because the bus is cheap, I take the bus.' These are common in everyday conversation with friends or colleagues.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
我应该坐火车还是坐公交车去机场?
Should I take the train or the bus to the airport?Wǒ yīnggāi zuò huǒchē háishì zuò gōngjiāochē qù jīchǎng?坐火车比较快,但是比较贵。坐公交车便宜,但是可能堵车。
Taking the train is faster, but more expensive. The bus is cheaper, but there might be traffic.Zuò huǒchē bǐjiào kuài, dànshì bǐjiào guì. Zuò gōngjiāochē piányi, dànshì kěnéng dǔchē.因为我现在很赶时间,所以我坐火车吧。
Because I'm in a hurry now, I'll take the train.Yīnwèi wǒ xiànzài hěn gǎn shíjiān, suǒyǐ wǒ zuò huǒchē ba.好的。火车每十分钟一班,很方便。
Okay. The train comes every ten minutes, very convenient.Hǎo de. Huǒchē měi shí fēnzhōng yī bān, hěn fāngbiàn.A little context goes a long way
In mainland China, public transport is widely used and often efficient. Trains (地铁, dìtiě, subway; 火车, huǒchē, train) are usually punctual, while buses (公交车, gōngjiāochē) can be affected by traffic. When asking for advice, using 还是 is neutral and polite. If you are talking to an older person or someone you don't know well, you can add 请问 (qǐngwèn, may I ask) at the beginning. In Taiwan, 捷運 (jiéyùn) is used for metro, and 公車 (gōngchē) for bus. Be aware of regional differences in vocabulary.
One thing to watch for
Using 还是 in a statement: 我可以坐火车还是坐公交车。
Try this instead: In statements, use 或者 instead of 还是. Correct: 我可以坐火车或者坐公交车。 (Wǒ kěyǐ zuò huǒchē huòzhě zuò gōngjiāochē.) 'I can take the train or the bus.' Use 还是 only in questions: 你坐火车还是坐公交车?

所以
因为...所以... is a common pair meaning 'because... so...'. 所以 introduces the result. Other connectors like 因此 are more formal.
Use 还是 for choice questions, 或者 for statements, and 比较 to compare options. Always give a reason with 因为...所以... to sound natural.
