Chinese for Rideshare Pickups: Saying the Map Pin Is Slightly Off

Learn to tell a Chinese rideshare driver the map pin is inaccurate, that it is off, and to move a bit forward, using 定位不准, 偏了 and 往前一点.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

When a driver follows the map pin but stops a block away or on the wrong side of a barrier, you need short, calm Chinese that fixes the pickup fast. This lesson teaches three core expressions: 定位不准 (the location pin is inaccurate), 偏了 (it is off), and 往前一点 (a bit forward). You will also learn to ask the driver to wait, to confirm a landmark, and to check whether the pin has updated. The register is polite and practical, the kind of phrasing that works on the phone or through the car window. All examples use simplified Chinese with pinyin and tone marks.

    By the end, you can…

    • say that the map pin is inaccurate using 定位不准.
    • tell a driver the pin is off and ask them to move a bit forward.
    • ask a driver to wait while I check or update the pin.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    定位不准。

    The location pin is inaccurate.

    dìngwèi bù zhǔn

Use this when the driver has arrived but the pin does not match your actual spot. It states the problem without blaming anyone.

    偏了。

It is off. / It has shifted.

    piān le

Short and natural. Use it when the car is close but not quite at the right place, for example across the street or past the entrance.

    往前一点。

    A bit forward.

    wǎng qián yìdiǎn

Use this to guide the driver a short distance ahead. It is a direction, not a long instruction, so keep it brief.

    您在路口等一下,我马上到。

Please wait at the intersection for a moment; I will be right there.

nín zài lùkǒu děng yíxià, wǒ mǎshàng dào

Polite and clear. 您 is respectful, and 马上到 signals you are moving now, which reduces driver frustration.

    我这边显示的位置更新了。

The location shown on my side has updated.

wǒ zhè biān xiǎnshì de wèizhì gēngxīn le

Use this after you refresh the app or move the pin. It tells the driver to check the map again.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 定位 + 不准 states a fact about the pin: 定位不准 means the pin is not accurate. To describe how it is wrong, use 偏了 with a direction: 偏左了 (it is off to the left), 偏右了 (off to the right), 偏前了 (off toward the front). To guide movement, use 往 + direction + 一点: 往前一点 (a bit forward), 往后一点 (a bit back), 往左一点 (a bit left). These are short commands softened by 一点, which makes them sound helpful rather than bossy. For example, 师傅,定位不准,您往前一点,我在便利店门口。This combines the problem, the fix, and a landmark in one calm sentence.

    When to use it

Use 定位不准 when the driver insists they have arrived but you cannot see them, or when the app shows the car at the wrong side of a building. Use 偏了 when the car is visible but misplaced, such as 偏了,您在马路对面 (You are off; you are across the road). Use 往前一点 when the driver needs a small correction, not a new destination. If the driver sounds rushed, add 麻烦您 (please, may I trouble you): 麻烦您往前一点,谢谢. Avoid giving long explanations; drivers are often mid-route. A landmark plus a short direction works best: 定位不准,您往右一点,我在药店门口.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    师傅,您到了吗?我这边定位不准。

Driver, have you arrived? The location pin on my side is inaccurate.shīfu, nín dào le ma? wǒ zhè biān dìngwèi bù zhǔn
    B

    我到了,但是没看到您。您在哪儿?

I have arrived, but I do not see you. Where are you?wǒ dào le, dànshì méi kàn dào nín. nín zài nǎr?
    A

    偏了,您在马路对面。麻烦您往前一点,我在便利店门口。

You are off; you are across the road. Please move a bit forward; I am at the convenience store entrance.piān le, nín zài mǎlù duìmiàn. máfan nín wǎng qián yìdiǎn, wǒ zài biànlìdiàn ménkǒu
    B

    好,我往前开一点。您看到我的车了吗?

Okay, I will drive forward a bit. Do you see my car?hǎo, wǒ wǎng qián kāi yìdiǎn. nín kàn dào wǒ de chē le ma?

A little context goes a long way

In mainland China, 师傅 (shī fu) is a common respectful address for drivers and is warmer than 司机 alone. 您 (nín) is polite and appropriate with strangers, while 你 is fine with peers. Keep instructions short and calm; a rushed driver may not read long messages. If you must cancel or change the pickup point, say so clearly and early rather than repeating 定位不准.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 你走错了 (you went the wrong way) when the pin is simply inaccurate.

Try this instead: Use 定位不准 or 偏了 instead, because the driver followed the map correctly. For example: 定位不准,您往前一点。This keeps the tone cooperative and avoids blaming the driver.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1The driver is across the street from you. What short phrase tells them the pin is off?

    Show a sample answer

    偏了。

偏了 means it is off or shifted, and it fits when the car is close but misplaced. 定位不准 also works, but it describes the pin rather than the car's position.

2You want the driver to move a short distance ahead. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    往前一点。

往前一点 means a bit forward. You could also say 麻烦您往前一点 to sound more polite, but the short form is natural in a quick exchange.

3The driver has arrived but cannot see you. Ask them to wait while you come.

    Show a sample answer

    您在路口等一下,我马上到。

This asks the driver to wait at the intersection and says you are coming immediately. 您 makes it respectful, and 马上到 reassures the driver.

    Take this with you

When the map pin is wrong, stay calm and specific: say 定位不准 or 偏了, then give one short direction like 往前一点 and a landmark. Keep it polite with 您 and 麻烦您.
