You arrive at a gated residential community in China, but the main gate is for residents and you are a visitor. The security guard (保安, bǎo'ān) is the right person to ask. This lesson teaches you how to politely ask for the entrance using 请问入口在哪里? (qǐngwèn rùkǒu zài nǎlǐ?), how to identify yourself as a visitor (访客, fǎngkè), and how to understand simple directions. The focus is on respectful, clear Mandarin suitable for standard residential areas. You will practice a short dialogue and learn to avoid common errors like using 入口 for a building's door or forgetting 请问.

    By the end, you can…

    • politely ask a security guard where the entrance is using 请问入口在哪里?
    • identify myself as a visitor and ask for the visitor entrance.
    • understand and respond to simple directions like 前面 (ahead) and 左边 (left).

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    请问入口在哪里?

Excuse me, where is the entrance?

    qǐngwèn rùkǒu zài nǎlǐ?

Use 请问 to politely open a question to a stranger. 入口 means entrance (to a place or area).

    保安

    security guard

    bǎo'ān

The person at the gate or in a uniform who manages access. Address them directly without a title, or say 师傅 (shīfu) to be respectful.

    访客

    visitor

    fǎngkè

Use this to describe yourself when you are not a resident. It is neutral and clear.

    我是访客,请问访客入口在哪里?

I am a visitor. Excuse me, where is the visitor entrance?

wǒ shì fǎngkè, qǐngwèn fǎngkè rùkǒu zài nǎlǐ?

A complete, polite request that states your status and asks for the specific entrance.

    谢谢,我明白了。

    Thank you, I understand.

    xièxie, wǒ míngbai le.

A polite closing after receiving directions. 明白了 means 'understood'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 请问……在哪里? (qǐngwèn ... zài nǎlǐ?) is a polite way to ask where something is. Replace the blank with a place noun: 请问入口在哪里? (Where is the entrance?), 请问访客入口在哪里? (Where is the visitor entrance?), 请问电梯在哪里? (Where is the elevator?). 请问 softens the question and shows respect. Without it, the question can sound abrupt. The answer often uses location words like 前面 (qiánmiàn, ahead), 左边 (zuǒbiān, left), 右边 (yòubiān, right), or 对面 (duìmiàn, opposite). For example, 入口在前面 (The entrance is ahead).

    When to use it

Use these phrases when you arrive at a gated community, office building, or campus and need to find the correct entrance for visitors. Approach the 保安 (security guard) at the gate, make eye contact, and say 请问入口在哪里? or 我是访客,请问访客入口在哪里? if you know there is a separate visitor entrance. If the guard gives directions, listen for 前面, 左边, 右边, or 一直走 (go straight). If you do not understand, say 不好意思,请再说一遍 (bù hǎoyìsi, qǐng zài shuō yí biàn, 'Sorry, please say it again'). Always end with 谢谢 (thank you).

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    您好,我是访客。请问入口在哪里?

Hello, I am a visitor. Excuse me, where is the entrance?nín hǎo, wǒ shì fǎngkè. qǐngwèn rùkǒu zài nǎlǐ?
    B

    访客入口在左边,一直走就到了。

The visitor entrance is on the left. Go straight and you will arrive.fǎngkè rùkǒu zài zuǒbiān, yìzhí zǒu jiù dào le.
    A

    好的,谢谢!需要登记吗?

Okay, thank you! Do I need to register?hǎo de, xièxie! xūyào dēngjì ma?
    B

    是的,请到那边登记。

Yes, please register over there.shì de, qǐng dào nàbiān dēngjì.

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese residential areas, security guards (保安) are common at gates and are used to giving directions. Addressing them with 您好 (nín hǎo) or 师傅 (shīfu) is polite. While 请问入口在哪里? is fine, adding 我是访客 makes your purpose clear and can speed up help. Registration (登记) is often required for visitors, but policies vary; ask if unsure. Avoid assuming you can enter without checking in.

    One thing to watch for

Using 入口 (rùkǒu) to mean the door of a specific apartment or building, or omitting 请问 and saying 入口在哪里? directly.

Try this instead: 入口 refers to an entrance to a larger area or building, not a room door. For a specific apartment door, use 门 (mén). Also, always include 请问 for politeness: 请问入口在哪里? (qǐngwèn rùkǒu zài nǎlǐ?). Saying 入口在哪里? without 请问 can sound abrupt to a stranger.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you politely ask a security guard where the entrance is?

    Show a sample answer

    请问入口在哪里?

This uses 请问 to soften the question and 入口 for entrance. You could also say 请问访客入口在哪里? if you know there is a visitor entrance.

2What word means 'visitor' in Chinese?

    Show a sample answer

    访客

访客 (fǎngkè) is the standard term for a visitor. It is neutral and appropriate in residential contexts.

3You are a visitor and want to state that before asking for the entrance. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    我是访客,请问入口在哪里?

This combines 我是访客 (I am a visitor) with the polite question. It clarifies your status and is respectful.

    Take this with you

At a gated community, greet the 保安 with 您好, say 我是访客, and ask 请问入口在哪里?. Listen for location words like 左边 or 前面, and thank them with 谢谢.
