How to Hedge Opinions in Mandarin Chinese: Softening with 我觉得 and 可能

Learn to express opinions tentatively in Mandarin using phrases like 我觉得 (I think), 可能 (maybe), and 好像 (it seems). This lesson teaches you to soften your statements and avoid sounding too direct.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

In Mandarin Chinese, expressing an opinion directly can sometimes sound abrupt or overly forceful, especially in polite conversation. To sound more diplomatic and considerate, you can use hedging phrases that soften your statement. This lesson introduces common expressions such as 我觉得 (wǒ juéde, I think), 可能 (kěnéng, maybe), 好像 (hǎoxiàng, it seems), and 也许 (yěxǔ, perhaps). You will learn how to combine these with your opinions to make them sound less absolute. We will focus on the pattern '我觉得...' and other softeners, and you will practice using them in a short dialogue. By the end, you will be able to express your views in a way that is both clear and polite.

    By the end, you can…

    • use 我觉得 to introduce a personal opinion softly.
    • use 可能 or 也许 to suggest uncertainty.
    • use 好像 to indicate that something seems to be the case.
    • soften a direct statement by adding a hedging phrase.

    我觉得

I think / in my opinion

    wǒ juéde

Used to introduce your personal view. It softens the statement by making it clear it's just your opinion.

    可能

    maybe / perhaps

    kěnéng

Placed before a verb or adjective to indicate possibility, reducing certainty.

    好像

it seems / it looks like

    hǎoxiàng

Used when you are not completely sure but want to suggest something based on observation.

    也许

    perhaps / maybe

    yěxǔ

Similar to 可能 but slightly more formal. Often used at the beginning of a sentence.

    我不太确定,但是

    I'm not sure, but...

    wǒ bú tài quèdìng, dànshì

A polite way to preface an opinion when you want to acknowledge uncertainty.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

A common pattern for softening opinions is: 我觉得 + [statement]. For example, 我觉得这个菜很好吃 (wǒ juéde zhège cài hěn hǎochī) means 'I think this dish is delicious.' You can also add 可能 or 好像 to further soften: 我觉得他可能不来了 (wǒ juéde tā kěnéng bù lái le) 'I think he might not come.' Another pattern is 好像 + [statement] + 似的 (shìde), but at elementary level, simply using 好像 before the statement is enough: 好像要下雨了 (hǎoxiàng yào xiàyǔ le) 'It seems it's going to rain.'

    When to use it

Use these hedges when you want to avoid sounding too direct or when you are not fully certain. For instance, instead of saying 这个不好 (zhège bù hǎo) 'This is not good,' you can say 我觉得这个可能不太好 (wǒ juéde zhège kěnéng bú tài hǎo) 'I think this might not be very good.' This is especially useful in polite conversation, when giving feedback, or when discussing sensitive topics. It shows respect for others' opinions and leaves room for disagreement.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你觉得这个电影怎么样?

What do you think of this movie?nǐ juéde zhège diànyǐng zěnmeyàng?
    B

    我觉得可能有点长,但是很有意思。

I think it might be a bit long, but it's very interesting.wǒ juéde kěnéng yǒudiǎn cháng, dànshì hěn yǒu yìsi.
    A

    我也觉得。好像结尾有点突然。

I think so too. It seems the ending is a bit sudden.wǒ yě juéde. hǎoxiàng jiéwěi yǒudiǎn tūrán.
    B

    也许吧。我不太确定,但是整体还不错。

Maybe. I'm not sure, but overall it's not bad.yěxǔ ba. wǒ bú tài quèdìng, dànshì zhěngtǐ hái búcuò.

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese communication, indirectness is often valued to maintain harmony. Using hedges like 我觉得 or 可能 is common in everyday polite speech, especially when expressing disagreement or criticism. However, in very informal settings among close friends, directness may be acceptable. Pay attention to tone and context.

    One thing to watch for

Learners often omit 我觉得 and state opinions directly, which can sound abrupt. For example, saying 这个不好 (zhège bù hǎo) 'This is not good' without any softener.

Try this instead: Add a hedging phrase to soften: 我觉得这个可能不太好 (wǒ juéde zhège kěnéng bú tài hǎo) 'I think this might not be very good.' This makes the statement more polite and open to discussion.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'I think this restaurant might be a bit expensive' in Chinese?

    Show a sample answer

    我觉得这家餐厅可能有点贵。

This uses 我觉得 to introduce the opinion and 可能 to indicate possibility, softening the statement. Alternatively, you could say 好像这家餐厅有点贵, but 我觉得...可能 is more personal.

2What does 好像 mean and how is it used?

    Show a sample answer

好像 means 'it seems' or 'it looks like'. It is used to express an impression or uncertain observation, e.g., 好像要下雨了 (It seems it's going to rain).

好像 softens a statement by suggesting it's based on appearance rather than certainty. It can be used at the beginning of a sentence or before a verb.

3Change the direct statement 这个不对 (This is wrong) into a softened opinion using 我觉得 and 可能.

    Show a sample answer

    我觉得这个可能不对。

Adding 我觉得 makes it a personal opinion, and 可能 reduces certainty. This is a polite way to express disagreement. You could also use 好像这个不对, but that focuses more on appearance.

    Take this with you

To soften opinions in Mandarin, start with 我觉得 (I think) and add 可能 (maybe) or 好像 (it seems) to sound less direct. Practice these patterns to communicate politely and flexibly.
