How to Disagree Politely in Mandarin Chinese
Learn to express polite disagreement in Mandarin using phrases like '我明白你的意思,但是...' (I see your point, but...). Maintain respect while sharing a different view.

In Mandarin Chinese, disagreeing politely is an essential skill for maintaining harmonious relationships. Unlike some languages where direct disagreement is common, Chinese culture often values indirectness and face-saving. This lesson teaches you elementary-level phrases to acknowledge someone's point and then gently present your own view. You'll learn to use '我明白你的意思,但是...' (I see your point, but...) and similar patterns. We focus on respectful disagreement, not strong confrontation. By the end, you'll be able to navigate everyday discussions with tact and cultural sensitivity.
By the end, you can…
- acknowledge someone's opinion before disagreeing.
- use '但是' (but) to introduce a polite counterpoint.
- soften disagreement with phrases like '可能' (maybe) or '我觉得' (I think).
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

我明白你的意思,但是...
I see your point, but...
wǒ míngbai nǐ de yìsi, dànshì...
Use this to show you understand the other person's view before offering a different opinion. It softens the disagreement.
你说得对,不过...
You're right, however...
nǐ shuō de duì, búguò...
'不过' is slightly more formal than '但是'.
我同意一部分,可是...
I agree in part, but...
wǒ tóngyì yí bùfen, kěshì...
Use when you partially agree but have reservations. '可是' is a common alternative to '但是'.
可能你是对的,但我觉得...
Maybe you're right, but I think...
kěnéng nǐ shì duì de, dàn wǒ juéde...
Soften your disagreement with '可能' (maybe) and '我觉得' (I think). This is very polite.
我理解,但从另一个角度看...
I understand, but from another angle...
wǒ lǐjiě, dàn cóng lìng yí gè jiǎodù kàn...
Use this to shift perspective without direct confrontation. '从另一个角度看' means 'from another angle'.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Useful pattern
A common pattern for polite disagreement is: Acknowledge + 但是/不过/可是 + Your view. For example, '我明白你的意思,但是我觉得这个想法需要更多时间' (I see your point, but I think this idea needs more time). You can also use '虽然...但是...' (although...but...) to contrast: '虽然我同意,但是...' (Although I agree, but...). Note that in Chinese, '虽然' and '但是' are often used together, unlike English where 'although' and 'but' are not used in the same clause.
When to use it
Use these phrases in situations where maintaining harmony is important, such as workplace discussions, family conversations, or when talking to someone older or in a higher position. For example, if a colleague suggests a plan you disagree with, you might say, '你说得对,不过我们也可以考虑另一个方案' (You're right, however we can also consider another plan). Avoid using these phrases in emergencies where directness is needed. Also, tone matters: keep your voice calm and friendly.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
我觉得我们应该周末加班完成这个项目。
I think we should work overtime this weekend to finish this project.wǒ juéde wǒmen yīnggāi zhōumò jiābān wánchéng zhège xiàngmù.我明白你的意思,但是大家已经很累了,可能效率不高。
I see your point, but everyone is already very tired, so efficiency might not be high.wǒ míngbai nǐ de yìsi, dànshì dàjiā yǐjīng hěn lèi le, kěnéng xiàolǜ bù gāo.你说得对,不过项目截止日期快到了。
You're right, however the project deadline is approaching.nǐ shuō de duì, búguò xiàngmù jiézhǐ rìqī kuài dào le.我理解,但从另一个角度看,我们可以先完成最重要的部分。
I understand, but from another angle, we can finish the most important part first.wǒ lǐjiě, dàn cóng lìng yí gè jiǎodù kàn, wǒmen kěyǐ xiān wánchéng zuì zhòngyào de bùfen.A little context goes a long way
In Chinese communication, indirectness is often valued to preserve harmony and 'face' (miànzi). Directly saying '你错了' (you're wrong) can be seen as rude. Instead, using phrases that acknowledge the other person's view first shows respect. However, in some modern or informal contexts, especially among close friends, more direct disagreement may be acceptable. Always consider the relationship and setting.
One thing to watch for
Using '但是' (but) without first acknowledging the other person's point, which can sound abrupt.
Try this instead: Always start with an acknowledgment like '我明白你的意思' (I see your point) or '你说得对' (you're right) before introducing '但是'. For example, say '我明白你的意思,但是...' instead of just '但是...'.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How would you politely disagree with a colleague who suggests a different approach?
Show a sample answer
我明白你的意思,但是我觉得我们可以试试另一个方法。
This answer acknowledges the colleague's point and then offers a different idea politely. Other variations like '你说得对,不过...' are also correct.
2What phrase can you use to soften your disagreement after saying '但是'?
Show a sample answer
可能
'可能' (maybe) softens the statement. For example, '但是可能这样更好' (but maybe this is better). Other softeners like '我觉得' (I think) also work.
3Translate: 'I agree in part, but we need more time.'
Show a sample answer
我同意一部分,但是我们需要更多时间。
This uses '我同意一部分' to show partial agreement, then '但是' to introduce the concern. '可是' can replace '但是' with similar meaning.
Politely disagree in Mandarin by first acknowledging the other person's view, then using '但是', '不过', or '可是' to introduce your own. Soften with '可能' or '我觉得' to maintain respect.
