Your food is on the way, but the main gate is closed and the driver is waiting at the wrong entrance. In this lesson you will learn to give clear, polite directions in Mandarin to redirect a delivery driver to the side gate of a residential compound. You will use three key building blocks: 侧门 (side gate), 从…进来 (enter from…), and 到了打电话 (call when you arrive). The focus is on short, efficient phone instructions that work in real urban compounds in mainland China. You do not need complex grammar; simple, direct sentences with a polite tone are exactly what drivers expect. By the end, you will be able to state the gate name, give a landmark, and arrange a phone call on arrival.

    By the end, you can…

    • name the side gate and tell a driver to enter from there.
    • give a simple landmark to help the driver find the side gate.
    • ask the driver to call when they arrive at the gate.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    请从侧门进来。

Please come in through the side gate.

    qǐng cóng cèmén jìnlái

Use this as your main instruction when the main gate is closed. 从…进来 means 'enter from…'.

    侧门在小区南边。

The side gate is on the south side of the compound.

    cèmén zài xiǎoqū nánbiān

Replace 南边 with 北边, 东边, or 西边 depending on the actual location. 小区 means residential compound.

    到了打电话。

    Call when you arrive.

    dào le dǎ diànhuà

A natural, efficient way to arrange contact. 到了 means 'when you have arrived'.

    我在侧门等你。

I'll wait for you at the side gate.

    wǒ zài cèmén děng nǐ

Reassures the driver that you will be there. 在…等你 means 'wait for you at…'.

    正门关了,走侧门。

The main gate is closed; take the side gate.

    zhèngmén guān le, zǒu cèmén

Explains why you are redirecting. 正门 means main gate; 走 here means 'go via'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 从 + place + 进来 means 'enter from (a place)'. For example, 从侧门进来 (enter from the side gate), 从北门进来 (enter from the north gate). To make it polite, add 请 at the start: 请从侧门进来。 You can also use 从…走 to mean 'go via…': 从侧门走。 This is slightly more casual but still fine on the phone. If you need to say where the gate is, use 在: 侧门在小区南边。 The structure is place + 在 + location. Keep sentences short; drivers are often on a scooter and need quick clarity.

    When to use it

Use these patterns when the driver calls to say they have arrived at the main gate but it is closed or inconvenient. Start with a polite 不好意思 (sorry) or 麻烦你 (sorry to trouble you), then give the instruction: 麻烦你从侧门进来。 If the driver does not know where the side gate is, add a landmark: 侧门在便利店旁边 (the side gate is next to the convenience store). Finally, arrange the handoff: 到了打电话,我下来拿 (call when you arrive, I'll come down to get it). This sequence—apology, instruction, landmark, call arrangement—covers most situations. Avoid long explanations; the driver is likely in a hurry.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    喂,你好。我到了,但是正门关了。

Hello. I've arrived, but the main gate is closed.wèi, nǐ hǎo. wǒ dào le, dànshì zhèngmén guān le.
    B

    不好意思,请从侧门进来。侧门在小区南边。

Sorry, please come in through the side gate. The side gate is on the south side of the compound.bù hǎoyìsi, qǐng cóng cèmén jìnlái. cèmén zài xiǎoqū nánbiān.
    A

    南边?是那个有便利店的门吗?

South side? Is it the gate with the convenience store?nánbiān? shì nàge yǒu biànlìdiàn de mén ma?
    B

    对,就是那个。到了打电话,我在侧门等你。

Yes, that's the one. Call when you arrive, I'll wait for you at the side gate.duì, jiùshì nàge. dào le dǎ diànhuà, wǒ zài cèmén děng nǐ.

A little context goes a long way

In mainland Chinese compounds, delivery drivers often cannot enter without a resident's confirmation. Speaking clearly and politely on the phone is expected; use 请 and 麻烦你 to soften instructions. Drivers may use 到了 to mean 'I've arrived at the gate', not necessarily at your building. It is common to meet the driver at the gate rather than have them come to your door. Keep the call brief and confirm the gate name and your meeting point.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 从侧门进去 instead of 从侧门进来 when you are inside the compound and the driver is outside.

Try this instead: Use 进来 when the movement is toward you (the speaker). 从侧门进来 means 'enter from the side gate' and is correct when you are inside. 从侧门进去 means 'go in through the side gate' and is used when you are outside with the driver or giving directions to someone else. For example, if you are at home: 请从侧门进来。 If you are outside pointing: 从侧门进去。

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you tell the driver to enter from the side gate?

    Show a sample answer

    请从侧门进来。

This uses the pattern 从 + place + 进来. Adding 请 makes it polite. You could also say 麻烦你从侧门进来。

2The side gate is on the north side. How do you say that?

    Show a sample answer

    侧门在小区北边。

The structure is place + 在 + location. 北边 means north side. You can replace 北边 with 南边, 东边, or 西边 as needed.

3How do you ask the driver to call when they arrive?

    Show a sample answer

    到了打电话。

This is a common, efficient phrase. 到了 means 'when arrived', and 打电话 means 'call'. You can add 我下来拿 (I'll come down to get it) if you plan to meet them.

    Take this with you

When the main gate is closed, stay calm and use three key phrases: 请从侧门进来 (please enter from the side gate), 侧门在… (the side gate is at…), and 到了打电话 (call when you arrive). Keep it short, polite, and confirm the meeting point.
