How to Ask to Extend Your Stay by One Night in Mandarin Chinese

When you already have a hotel room and want to stay longer, you do not make a new booking. You ask to extend your stay, and you first check whether the room is available for the extra night. In Mandarin, the key verb is 续 (xù), which means 'to continue or extend' something already in progress. The main request. 续住 (xù zhù) means 'to continue staying'. Use it when you already have a room and want one more night.

A polite way to ask about availability. 请问 (qǐng wèn) softens the question and is very common with hotel staff.

Change 两 (liǎng, two) to any number: 三 (sān, three), 四 (sì, four). 再 (zài) here means 'additionally'.

A short, natural question. 可以 (kě yǐ) means 'can, is it possible'. The 吗 (ma) at the end makes it a yes/no question.
我的房间明天有人订吗？

wǒ de fángjiān míngtiān yǒu rén dìng ma
Useful when you want to know if your exact room is free. 订 (dìng) means 'to book, to reserve'.

The core pattern is 我想 + 续住 + number + 晚 (wǒ xiǎng + xù zhù + number + wǎn), meaning 'I would like to extend my stay by ... nights'. For example, 我想续住一晚 (wǒ xiǎng xù zhù yī wǎn) is 'I would like to extend by one night', and 我想续住三晚 (wǒ xiǎng xù zhù sān wǎn) is 'three more nights'. To ask a yes/no question, add 吗 (ma) at the end: 可以续住吗？ (kěyǐ xù zhù ma) 'Is it possible to extend?' Note that Chinese nouns do not change for plural, so 一晚 can mean 'one night' and 三晚 'three nights' with no ending change.
When to use it
Use these phrases only when you already have a room and want more nights. If you have no room yet, you are making a new booking, and you would say 我想订一个房间 (wǒ xiǎng dìng yí ge fángjiān), 'I would like to book a room'. At the front desk, start with 你好 (nǐ hǎo) and then 我想续住一晚. Staff may answer 可以 (kěyǐ) 'yes, that's fine' or 不好意思，明天没有房间了 (bù hǎoyìsi, míngtiān méiyǒu fángjiān le) 'Sorry, there are no rooms for tomorrow'. If the answer is no, you can ask 附近有别的酒店吗？ (fùjìn yǒu bié de jiǔdiàn ma) 'Is there another hotel nearby?'

In mainland China, hotel staff usually speak standard Mandarin, and 续住 (xù zhù) is the normal word for extending a stay. Politeness comes mainly from tone and from words like 请问 (qǐngwèn) and 不好意思 (bù hǎoyìsi), not from long formal sentences. In Taiwan, people often say 續住 as well, but may prefer 再住一晚 (zài zhù yī wǎn) in casual speech. Speaking slowly and clearly is more helpful than trying to sound formal.
One thing to watch for
Learners often say 我想订一晚 (wǒ xiǎng dìng yī wǎn), 'I want to book one night', when they already have a room and only want one more night.
Try this instead: 订 (dìng) means 'to book' and suggests a new reservation. For an existing stay, use 续住 (xù zhù): 我想续住一晚 (wǒ xiǎng xù zhù yī wǎn), 'I would like to extend my stay by one night'. If you say 订, staff may think you want a separate new booking.

This means 'Sorry, there are no rooms for tomorrow'. 没有 (méiyǒu) is the negative of 有 (yǒu, to have). Other polite refusals are possible, such as 明天客满了 (míngtiān kè mǎn le), 'we are fully booked tomorrow'.
To extend an existing stay, say 我想续住一晚 (wǒ xiǎng xù zhù yī wǎn), and ask about availability with 还有房间吗？ (hái yǒu fángjiān ma). Use 续住, not 订, because 订 means making a new booking.
