A warm illustrated language study space

In Mandarin, to express a present wish about a situation that is not true, you use the pattern 要是 (yàoshi) ... 就好了 (jiù hǎo le). This is similar to the English 'I wish I had more time' or 'I wish I were taller'. Unlike regrets about the past, which often use 后悔 (hòuhuǐ) or 早知道 (zǎo zhīdào), this pattern focuses on an unreal present. The structure is: 要是 + [subject] + [verb/adjective] + 就好了. The subject can be omitted if it is clear from context. The verb or adjective describes the desired but unreal state. For example, 要是我有更多时间就好了 (I wish I had more time). This lesson will teach you to form such wishes accurately, understand when to use them, and avoid common mistakes.

    By the end, you can…

    • form present unreal wishes using 要是...就好了.
    • distinguish present wishes from past regrets in Mandarin.
    • use 要是...就好了 in conversation to express desires about the present.

    Useful pattern

The pattern 要是...就好了 is used to express a wish about a present unreal situation. 要是 means 'if', but here it introduces a hypothetical condition that is not true. 就好了 means 'would be good'. Together, they express 'I wish...'. For example, 要是我是你就好了 (I wish I were you). The subject after 要是 can be different from the speaker. You can also use 如果...就好了, but 要是 is more common in spoken Mandarin. The verb or adjective after the subject describes the desired state. You can use 有 (have), 是 (be), 会 (can), or any verb. For negative wishes, use 不 before the verb: 要是他不走就好了 (I wish he weren't leaving).

    When to use it

Use 要是...就好了 when you want to express a wish about the present that is contrary to reality. It is not used for past regrets. For past regrets, use 后悔 (regret) or 早知道 (if I had known). For example, 我后悔没去 (I regret not going) is a past regret. In contrast, 要是我去了就好了 (I wish I had gone) refers to the past, not the present. To keep it present, use time words like 现在 (now) or 今天 (today). For example, 要是我现在有空就好了 (I wish I were free now). This pattern is common in everyday conversation to express desires, complaints, or hypothetical situations.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    我真累,要是能休息一下就好了。

I'm so tired. I wish I could take a break.Wǒ zhēn lèi, yàoshi néng xiūxi yīxià jiù hǎo le.
    B

    是啊,要是今天不用加班就好了。

Yeah, I wish we didn't have to work overtime today.Shì a, yàoshi jīntiān bùyòng jiābān jiù hǎo le.
    A

    要是我们早点完成工作就好了。

I wish we could finish work earlier.Yàoshi wǒmen zǎodiǎn wánchéng gōngzuò jiù hǎo le.
    B

    别想了,快点做吧。

Stop thinking about it, let's hurry up and do it.Bié xiǎng le, kuàidiǎn zuò ba.

A little context goes a long way

In Mandarin, expressing wishes with 要是...就好了 is common in casual conversation. It can sound slightly resigned or wistful, so it's often used among friends or in informal settings. In formal contexts, people might use 如果...就好了 or more indirect phrasing. Avoid using this pattern to make requests; it expresses a wish, not a demand. For example, saying 要是你帮我就好了 could imply you wish for help but not directly ask for it. To make a polite request, use 你能帮我吗?(Can you help me?).

    One thing to watch for

Using 要是...就好了 for past regrets, e.g., 要是我昨天去了就好了 to mean 'I wish I had gone yesterday'.

Try this instead: 要是我昨天去了就好了 means 'I wish I had gone yesterday' and is a past regret, not a present wish. For clear present wishes, use present time words or contexts. To express past regret explicitly, use 我后悔昨天没去 (I regret not going yesterday) or 早知道我就去了 (If I had known, I would have gone). For present wishes, stick to present situations: 要是我现在有空就好了 (I wish I were free now).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'I wish I had a car' in Mandarin using 要是...就好了?

    Show a sample answer

    要是我有一辆车就好了。

This uses 要是...就好了 with 有 (have) and 一辆车 (a car). The subject 我 is optional but included for clarity. Alternative: 要是我有车就好了 is also correct.

2Translate: 'I wish she didn't have to leave.'

    Show a sample answer

    要是她不用走就好了。

Use 不用 (not need to) before 走 (leave). The negative 不 is part of 不用. Alternative: 要是她不走就好了 (I wish she weren't leaving) is also possible but slightly different in nuance.

3What is the difference between 要是...就好了 and 后悔?

    Show a sample answer

要是...就好了 expresses a wish about an unreal present or hypothetical situation, while 后悔 expresses regret about a past action.

要是...就好了 focuses on present wishes, e.g., 要是我现在在家就好了 (I wish I were home now). 后悔 is for past regrets, e.g., 我后悔没去 (I regret not going). They are not interchangeable.

    Take this with you

Use 要是...就好了 to express present unreal wishes in Mandarin. Remember it's for present situations, not past regrets. Practice with present time words to keep the meaning clear.
