Learn to disagree with a suggestion politely in Mandarin Chinese using collaborative phrases like 'That's an idea, but maybe we could...' for elementary learners.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

In Mandarin Chinese, disagreeing with a suggestion politely is a key collaborative skill. Instead of saying 'No' directly, you can acknowledge the idea and then offer an alternative. This lesson teaches you phrases such as 这个主意不错,不过也许我们可以... (Zhège zhǔyi bùcuò, bùguò yěxǔ wǒmen kěyǐ...) meaning 'That's a good idea, but maybe we could...'. You will learn to use 不过 (bùguò, but) and 也许 (yěxǔ, maybe) to soften disagreement, and 可以 (kěyǐ, could) to propose alternatives. This approach maintains harmony and shows teamwork. We will focus on polite, collaborative disagreement, not general disagreement. By the end, you will be able to respond to suggestions in a way that respects others and moves the conversation forward.

    By the end, you can…

    • politely disagree with a suggestion using 不过 and 也许.
    • propose an alternative using 我们可以...吗?

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    这个主意不错,不过...

    That's a good idea, but...

    Zhège zhǔyi bùcuò, bùguò...

Use to acknowledge a suggestion before politely disagreeing. 不过 means 'but' and softens the disagreement.

    也许我们可以...

    Maybe we could...

    Yěxǔ wǒmen kěyǐ...

Introduce an alternative suggestion. 也许 means 'maybe', 可以 means 'could'.

    你觉得怎么样?

    What do you think?

    Nǐ juéde zěnmeyàng?

Ask for the other person's opinion after proposing an alternative, showing collaboration.

    我明白你的意思,但是...

I understand what you mean, but...

Wǒ míngbai nǐ de yìsi, dànshì...

Show empathy before disagreeing. 但是 is a slightly stronger 'but' than 不过.

    我们能不能...?

    Can we...?

    Wǒmen néng bu néng...?

A polite way to suggest an alternative, literally 'Can we or can we not...?'

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern '这个主意不错,不过也许我们可以...' (Zhège zhǔyi bùcuò, bùguò yěxǔ wǒmen kěyǐ...) is very useful. It starts with praise (这个主意不错), then uses 不过 (bùguò, but) to introduce a gentle contrast, and 也许 (yěxǔ, maybe) plus 可以 (kěyǐ, could) to propose an alternative. For example: 这个主意不错,不过也许我们可以换个时间。 (Zhège zhǔyi bùcuò, bùguò yěxǔ wǒmen kěyǐ huàn ge shíjiān.) 'That's a good idea, but maybe we could change the time.' You can also use 我们能不能...? (Wǒmen néng bu néng...?) 'Can we...?' to make a suggestion. Remember to keep your tone soft and friendly.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when you are in a group discussion and want to disagree without causing offense. For example, if a colleague suggests meeting at 3 PM but you have a conflict, you can say: 这个主意不错,不过也许我们可以改到4点? (Zhège zhǔyi bùcuò, bùguò yěxǔ wǒmen kěyǐ gǎi dào sì diǎn?) 'That's a good idea, but maybe we could change it to 4 o'clock?' This shows you value their input but have a different idea. It is appropriate in work, school, or social planning. Avoid using direct '不' (bù, no) as it may sound abrupt. Instead, always acknowledge first, then suggest an alternative.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    我们周末去爬山吧。

Let's go hiking this weekend.Wǒmen zhōumò qù páshān ba.
    B

    这个主意不错,不过也许我们可以去公园?

That's a good idea, but maybe we could go to the park?Zhège zhǔyi bùcuò, bùguò yěxǔ wǒmen kěyǐ qù gōngyuán?
    A

    为什么?爬山不好吗?

Why? Is hiking not good?Wèishénme? Páshān bù hǎo ma?
    B

    爬山很好,但是我腿有点疼。我们能不能去公园散步?

Hiking is great, but my legs hurt a bit. Can we go for a walk in the park?Páshān hěn hǎo, dànshì wǒ tuǐ yǒudiǎn téng. Wǒmen néng bu néng qù gōngyuán sànbù?

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese communication, indirectness and politeness are highly valued, especially in group settings. Directly saying '不' (bù, no) to a suggestion can be seen as blunt. Using phrases like 不过 (bùguò) and 也许 (yěxǔ) shows respect and maintains harmony. It is common to first affirm the other person's idea before offering an alternative. This collaborative style is appreciated in both professional and casual contexts.

    One thing to watch for

Saying '不,我们不去爬山' (Bù, wǒmen bù qù páshān) directly, which means 'No, we are not going hiking.'

Try this instead: Instead, use a softer approach: '这个主意不错,不过也许我们可以去公园?' (Zhège zhǔyi bùcuò, bùguò yěxǔ wǒmen kěyǐ qù gōngyuán?) This acknowledges the suggestion and offers an alternative politely.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you politely disagree with the suggestion '我们去看电影吧' (Let's go watch a movie) and suggest going to a café instead?

    Show a sample answer

    这个主意不错,不过也许我们可以去咖啡馆?

This answer uses the pattern to acknowledge the idea and propose an alternative. Other alternatives like '不过我们能不能去咖啡馆?' are also correct.

2What does '不过' mean in the phrase '这个主意不错,不过...'?

    Show a sample answer

    It means 'but'.

'不过' is a conjunction that introduces a contrasting idea, similar to 'but' in English. It softens the disagreement.

3Translate into Chinese: 'I understand what you mean, but maybe we could try another way.'

    Show a sample answer

    我明白你的意思,但是也许我们可以试别的方法。

This uses '我明白你的意思' to show empathy, '但是' for contrast, and '也许我们可以' to suggest an alternative. Other variations are possible.

    Take this with you

To disagree politely with a suggestion in Mandarin, start by acknowledging the idea, then use 不过 (bùguò) and 也许 (yěxǔ) to offer an alternative. This keeps the conversation collaborative and respectful.
