How to Say Thanks for Having Me in Mandarin Chinese

Learn to thank a host in Mandarin with phrases like 谢谢你的招待 and 我玩得很开心. This lesson covers when to use each, how to follow up, and common mistakes.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

Thanking a host in Mandarin is not the same as a general thanks. Chinese has specific phrases for appreciating someone's hospitality, and the most natural choice depends on whether you are leaving, writing a message, or speaking to a close friend. This lesson teaches you five practical expressions, shows you how to follow up, and explains the difference between thanking a host and thanking someone for a gift or favor. You will practice with a short dialogue and avoid a common error that can sound distant or overly formal.

    By the end, you can…

    • thank a host for inviting me using 谢谢你的招待 or 谢谢你请我.
    • say I had a good time with 我玩得很开心 or 我过得很愉快.
    • follow up after an event with a short message like 下次再聚.
    • choose between casual and polite host thanks depending on the situation.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    谢谢你的招待。

    Thanks for your hospitality.

    Xièxie nǐ de zhāodài.

A warm, standard way to thank a host after a meal or party. Use it when leaving or in a follow-up message. 招待 means hospitality or hosting.

    谢谢你请我。

    Thanks for inviting me.

    Xièxie nǐ qǐng wǒ.

Use when the host paid for or arranged the event. It focuses on the invitation itself, not the hosting effort.

    我玩得很开心。

    I had a great time.

    Wǒ wán de hěn kāixīn.

A friendly, common way to say you enjoyed yourself. 玩 means to play or hang out, so it fits casual gatherings, dinners, and trips.

    我过得很愉快。

I had a very pleasant time.

    Wǒ guò de hěn yúkuài.

Slightly more formal than 我玩得很开心. Good for a business dinner or when speaking to an older host.

    下次再聚。

Let's get together again next time.

    Xià cì zài jù.

A natural follow-up that keeps the relationship warm. It is not a firm plan, but a friendly wish to meet again.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

A simple pattern for host thanks is 谢谢你的 + noun, where the noun names what you appreciated. For hosting, say 谢谢你的招待 (Xièxie nǐ de zhāodài). For a meal, say 谢谢你的晚饭 (Xièxie nǐ de wǎnfàn). To focus on the invitation, use 谢谢你请我 (Xièxie nǐ qǐng wǒ). After the thanks, add a feeling: 我玩得很开心 (Wǒ wán de hěn kāixīn) or 我过得很愉快 (Wǒ guò de hěn yúkuài). You can combine them: 谢谢你的招待,我玩得很开心。 (Xièxie nǐ de zhāodài, wǒ wán de hěn kāixīn.) This two-part structure sounds complete and sincere.

    When to use it

Use 谢谢你的招待 when you are leaving a host's home or after a meal they prepared. Use 谢谢你请我 when the host invited you to an event or paid for dinner. For a close friend, 我玩得很开心 alone is enough and sounds natural. For a boss or an older relative, choose 我过得很愉快 and add 谢谢你的招待. If you are writing a message the next day, start with 昨天谢谢你的招待 (Zuótiān xièxie nǐ de zhāodài) and end with 下次再聚 (Xià cì zài jù). Avoid using 谢谢你的招待 for a gift; for a gift, say 谢谢你的礼物 (Xièxie nǐ de lǐwù).

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    谢谢你的招待,我玩得很开心。

Thanks for your hospitality, I had a great time.Xièxie nǐ de zhāodài, wǒ wán de hěn kāixīn.
    B

    不客气,你能来我很高兴。

You're welcome, I'm glad you could come.Bú kèqi, nǐ néng lái wǒ hěn gāoxìng.
    A

    下次再聚,我请你。

Let's get together again next time, my treat.Xià cì zài jù, wǒ qǐng nǐ.
    B

    好啊,一言为定。

    Sure, it's a deal.Hǎo a, yì yán wéi dìng.

A little context goes a long way

In Mandarin, thanking a host often includes acknowledging the effort or the invitation, not just saying 谢谢. A short follow-up message the next day is common and appreciated, especially after a meal at someone's home. Among close friends, too much formal thanks can feel distant, so a simple 我玩得很开心 works well. For business or older hosts, adding 谢谢你的招待 shows respect. If the host gave you a gift, thank them for the gift separately with 谢谢你的礼物.

    One thing to watch for

Using 谢谢你的招待 for any kind of thanks, including for a gift or a small favor.

Try this instead: 招待 specifically means hosting or hospitality, so it fits meals and events at someone's home or arranged by them. For a gift, say 谢谢你的礼物 (Xièxie nǐ de lǐwù). For a favor, say 谢谢你帮我 (Xièxie nǐ bāng wǒ).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1Your friend cooked dinner for you. You are leaving. What can you say to thank them for hosting?

    Show a sample answer

    谢谢你的招待,我玩得很开心。

This combines thanks for hospitality with a positive feeling. 谢谢你请我 is also acceptable if your friend invited you, but 招待 focuses on the hosting effort.

2You want to say 'I had a great time' in a casual way. Which phrase do you use?

    Show a sample answer

    我玩得很开心。

This is the most common casual phrase. 我过得很愉快 is also correct but sounds a bit more formal.

3You are writing a follow-up message the next day. What is a natural way to end it?

    Show a sample answer

    下次再聚。

This keeps the relationship warm and suggests meeting again. You could also say 下次我请你 if you want to offer to host next time.

    Take this with you

Thank your host with 谢谢你的招待 or 谢谢你请我, add 我玩得很开心 or 我过得很愉快, and follow up with 下次再聚. Keep it specific to hosting, not general thanks.
