Chinese for Finding the Right Gate: 北门 vs. 东北门 and 不是…是…

Learn to distinguish 北门 (north gate) from 东北门 (northeast gate) and use 不是…是… to correct a friend at a large exhibition center.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

At a big exhibition center, gates are often named by compass direction: 北门 (běimén) is the north gate, 东北门 (dōngběimén) is the northeast gate. They sound similar, but they are different entrances. In this lesson you will learn to say both clearly, ask staff which gate is which, and correct a friend who went to the wrong one using the pattern 不是…是… (bú shì… shì…), meaning 'It's not X, it's Y.' This is practical, slightly urgent language for when you need to meet someone quickly.

    By the end, you can…

    • say 北门 and 东北门 clearly and understand the difference.
    • ask which gate someone is at using 你在哪个门?
    • correct a wrong gate using 不是…是….
    • tell a friend to come to the correct gate with 来北门.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    北门

    north gate

    Běimén

Use for the gate on the north side. Tone: third tone + second tone.

    东北门

    northeast gate

    Dōngběimén

Use for the gate between north and east. First tone + third tone + second tone.

    你在哪个门?

    Which gate are you at?

    Nǐ zài nǎge mén?

Ask a friend or staff to find out their location. 哪个 means 'which'.

    不是北门,是东北门。

It's not the north gate, it's the northeast gate.

    Bú shì běimén, shì dōngběimén.

Correct someone who mixed up the two gates. 不是…是… highlights the correction.

    来北门。

    Come to the north gate.

    Lái běimén.

A direct, slightly urgent instruction to tell someone where to go.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 不是…是… (bú shì… shì…) means 'It's not X, it's Y.' Put the wrong item after 不是 and the correct item after 是. For example: 不是北门,是东北门。 (It's not the north gate, it's the northeast gate.) You can also use it with people: 不是他,是我。 (It's not him, it's me.) Keep the two parts short and clear. In a noisy exhibition center, this pattern helps you correct a mistake quickly without long explanations.

    When to use it

Use 不是…是… when someone has the wrong information and you need to fix it immediately. For example, if your friend says 我在北门 (I'm at the north gate), but you know the meeting point is the northeast gate, you say: 不是北门,是东北门。 Then add 来东北门 (come to the northeast gate). This is direct but not rude; it focuses on the facts. If you want to be softer, you can say 不是北门,是东北门,你走错了 (You went to the wrong one).

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你在哪个门?

Which gate are you at?Nǐ zài nǎge mén?
    B

    我在北门。

I'm at the north gate.Wǒ zài běimén.
    A

    不是北门,是东北门。来东北门。

It's not the north gate, it's the northeast gate. Come to the northeast gate.Bú shì běimén, shì dōngběimén. Lái dōngběimén.
    B

    好,我马上来。

Okay, I'll come right away.Hǎo, wǒ mǎshàng lái.

A little context goes a long way

At large exhibition centers in China, gates are often labeled with compass directions, and staff are used to giving directions. It is normal to ask 请问北门怎么走? (Excuse me, how do I get to the north gate?) Politeness markers like 请问 (qǐng wèn) soften the request. When correcting a friend, a direct 不是…是… is fine among peers, but with strangers or staff, add 不好意思 (bù hǎo yì si) to sound polite.

    One thing to watch for

    Saying 不是北门,是东北门 as 不是北门,东北门 without 是.

Try this instead: The pattern requires 是 before the correct item: 不是北门,是东北门。 Without 是, the sentence sounds incomplete. Remember: 不是 X,是 Y。

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'northeast gate' in Chinese?

    Show a sample answer

    东北门 (dōng běi mén)

东北 means northeast, and 门 means gate. Together they form 东北门. A valid alternative is to say 东北边的门 (the gate on the northeast side), but 东北门 is the standard short form.

2Your friend says 我在北门. You know the correct gate is the northeast gate. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    不是北门,是东北门。

This uses 不是…是… to correct the gate. You could also add 来东北门 to tell them where to go. Both are correct; the key is to include 是 before the correct gate.

3How do you ask 'Which gate are you at?' in Chinese?

    Show a sample answer

    你在哪个门?

你在 means 'you are at', 哪个 means 'which', and 门 means 'gate'. A slightly more polite version is 请问你在哪个门? (Excuse me, which gate are you at?).

    Take this with you

Remember: 北门 is north gate, 东北门 is northeast gate. To correct a mix-up, use 不是…是…: 不是北门,是东北门。 Ask 你在哪个门? to find out where someone is, and say 来北门 or 来东北门 to tell them where to go.
