Confirming a Building Letter in Chinese on the Phone: 栋, 座 and Asking for a Repeat

Learn to say and confirm a building letter over the phone in Mandarin: A栋, B座, and the polite request 再说一遍 when street noise makes you miss it.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends planning a trip around a map in a warmly lit café

When a delivery rider calls from downstairs, the fastest way to fix a wrong entrance is to say the building letter clearly and, if noise swallows it, ask for a repeat. In mainland residential complexes the letter usually comes after a classifier: A栋 (dòng) or B座 (zuò). These are not interchangeable everywhere, so this lesson teaches both, plus the polite phrase 再说一遍 for asking someone to say it again. You will practise short, loud, phone-friendly sentences that confirm one letter at a time, so the rider knows exactly which gate or lobby to use.

    By the end, you can…

    • say a building letter with the right classifier, such as A栋 or B座.
    • ask a caller to repeat something politely with 再说一遍.
    • confirm which letter I heard by repeating it back as a question.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    A栋

    Building A

A dòng (letter A, then dòng with a falling tone)

Common in complexes where buildings are numbered with letters plus 栋. Say the letter in English pronunciation, then 栋.

    B座

    Block B

B zuò (letter B, then zuò with a falling tone)

座 is very common for towers or blocks. Use it when the sign or address says 座, not 栋.

    再说一遍

Say it again / one more time

zài shuō yí biàn (falling, high, rising, falling)

A neutral, polite way to ask for a repeat. Add 请 (qǐng, please) before it for extra politeness.

    是A栋吗?

    Is it Building A?

shì A dòng ma (falling, letter A, falling, neutral)

Repeat the letter back as a question to confirm. 吗 turns the statement into a yes/no question.

    我听不清

    I can't hear clearly

wǒ tīng bù qīng (dipping, high, falling, high)

Use this before asking for a repeat when there is background noise. It explains why you need 再说一遍.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is a letter plus a classifier: A栋 (Building A) or B座 (Block B). Put the letter first, then the measure word that matches the sign. To confirm, repeat it back with 是…吗: 是A栋吗? (Is it Building A?). If you miss it, say 我听不清,请再说一遍 (I can't hear clearly, please say it again). Keep each sentence short; on a noisy phone call, one letter and one classifier are easier to catch than a full address.

    When to use it

Use 栋 when the complex labels buildings as 栋, and 座 when the sign says 座. If you are unsure, you can ask 是A栋还是B座? (Is it Building A or Block B?). Use 再说一遍 when the rider speaks too fast or a truck passes by. 请再说一遍 is polite and safe with strangers. Avoid stacking many questions; confirm the letter first, then the entrance or gate.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    喂,你好。我在A栋门口。

Hello. I'm at the entrance of Building A.wéi, nǐ hǎo. wǒ zài A dòng mén kǒu.
    B

    A栋?我听不清,请再说一遍。

Building A? I can't hear clearly, please say it again.A dòng? wǒ tīng bù qīng, qǐng zài shuō yí biàn.
    A

    A栋,A、栋。是A栋吗?

Building A, A, dòng. Is it Building A?A dòng, A, dòng. shì A dòng ma?
    B

    对,是A栋。我马上到。

Yes, it's Building A. I'll be right there.duì, shì A dòng. wǒ mǎ shàng dào.

A little context goes a long way

In mainland China, building labels vary by complex: some use 栋, some use 座, and some use 号楼 (lóu hào). The letter is usually spoken in its English pronunciation, then the Chinese classifier. On the phone, short repeats are normal and not rude; 请再说一遍 keeps it polite. If the rider uses a different classifier than your sign, confirm the letter first, then repeat the classifier you see.

    One thing to watch for

Saying just the letter, like “A”, and expecting the listener to know it means Building A.

Try this instead: Add the classifier that matches the sign: A栋 or B座. For example, say 我在A栋 (I'm at Building A) or 我在B座 (I'm at Block B). If you are not sure, ask 是A栋还是B座? (Is it Building A or Block B?).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1You are at the entrance of Block B and the rider cannot hear you. Say the building and ask for a repeat.

    Show a sample answer

    我在B座。请再说一遍。

This gives the location first, then a polite request to repeat. 请 makes it more polite; 再说一遍 alone is also acceptable.

2You think the rider said A栋, but you are not sure. How do you confirm?

    Show a sample answer

    是A栋吗?

Repeating the letter and classifier with 是…吗 turns it into a yes/no question. You could also say 是A栋还是B座? if you want to offer both options.

3The rider says something too fast and you only catch “座”. What can you say?

    Show a sample answer

    我听不清,请再说一遍。

This explains the problem and asks for a repeat. 请再说一遍 is polite and works with strangers; 再说一遍 is fine in casual situations.

    Take this with you

Say the letter with the right classifier (A栋 or B座), confirm it back with 是…吗, and use 请再说一遍 when noise hides the answer.
