Chinese for Parcel Pickup: Gate, Shelf, Row, and Layer

Learn to say which gate your parcel locker is at and which shelf, row, and layer it is on. Elementary Mandarin, mainland usage.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

When you pick up a parcel in China, the locker screen or message often tells you a gate and a shelf location. You need to say and understand: 东门 (east gate), 西门 (west gate), 货架 (shelf), 第三排 (third row), and the layer number. This lesson gives you reusable patterns to ask (which shelf?) and to answer with 左边/右边 (left/right). You will also learn to ask staff for help without guessing policies or prices. The language is neutral and works in mainland China. Focus on clear numbers and location words: 东/西/南/北门, 第 + number + 排, 第 + number + 层, and 左边/右边. By the end, you can state your parcel location and confirm it with a staff member.

    By the end, you can…

    • say which gate my parcel locker is at using 东门/西门/南门/北门.
    • ask 在哪个货架? and understand a shelf number.
    • say and understand 第三排 and a layer number like 第二层.
    • use 左边/右边 to locate a shelf or locker.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Which shelf is my parcel on?

wǒ de kuàidì zài nǎge huòjià?

Use 快递 for a parcel or delivery. 在哪个货架 asks for the shelf, not the gate.

At the east gate, third row, second layer.

zài dōngmén, dì sān pái, dì èr céng.

A full location answer: gate + row + layer. 第 + number + 排/层 is the standard pattern.

Is the shelf on the left or on the right?

    huòjià zài zuǒbian háishi yòubian?

Use 还是 for a choice question. 左边/右边 are neutral and common.

Excuse me, how do I get to the west gate?

    qǐngwèn, xīmén zěnme zǒu?

请问 makes the question polite. 怎么走 asks for directions to a place.

Could you help me check where my parcel is?

máfan bāng wǒ kàn yíxià, wǒ de kuàidì zài nǎr?

麻烦 softens a request. 帮我看一下 asks staff to check for you.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is 在 + place + 第 + number + 排/层. (At the east gate, third row, second layer.) (Which shelf?) or 在哪儿? (Where?). For left/right, use (On the left.) (On the right.) If you need the gate, say (Which gate?) and answer with 东门/西门/南门/北门. Keep numbers clear: 第一排 (first row), 第二排 (second row), 第三排 (third row); 第一层 (first layer), 第二层 (second layer), 第三层 (third layer).

    When to use it

Use these patterns when a locker screen or a message shows a gate and a shelf location, or when you ask a staff member for help. Start with 请问 to be polite: 请问,我的快递在哪个货架? If you hear a location, repeat it to confirm: 东门,第三排,第二层,对吗? (East gate, third row, second layer, right?) If you only know the gate, ask Staff may answer 左边 or 右边. Do not assume a fixed layout; ask each time. If you cannot find it, say (I can't find it.) and ask (Please help me a bit.)

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Excuse me, which shelf is my parcel on?qǐngwèn, wǒ de kuàidì zài nǎge huòjià?
    B

At the east gate, third row, second layer.zài dōngmén, dì sān pái, dì èr céng.
    A

Is the shelf on the left or on the right?huòjià zài zuǒbian háishi yòubian?
    B

On the right. There is also a shelf over by the west gate.zài yòubian. xīmén nàbian yě yǒu yí ge huòjià.

A little context goes a long way

In mainland China, parcel lockers and pickup points often use gate names like 东门/西门 and shelf labels like 第三排/第二层. Staff may speak quickly, so repeating the location back is useful. 请问 and 麻烦 are polite and common in service situations. Avoid assuming a fixed shelf layout or service policy; ask for the current location each time. 快递 is the everyday word for a parcel or delivery; 货架 means shelf. 左边/右边 are neutral and widely understood.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 第三货架 when you mean 第三排 (third row).

Try this instead: Use 第 + number + 排 for a row and 第 + number + 层 for a layer. (Third row, second layer.) If you mean a shelf number, ask 在哪个货架? and listen for a shelf label, not a row.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask 'Which shelf is my parcel on?' in Chinese?

    Show a sample answer

This uses 在哪个货架 to ask for the shelf. You can also say 我的快递在哪儿? if you want a general location.

2Say 'At the west gate, third row, second layer.'

    Show a sample answer

The pattern is 在 + gate + 第 + number + 排 + 第 + number + 层. 西门 is west gate, 第三排 is third row, 第二层 is second layer.

3How do you ask 'Is the shelf on the left or on the right?'

    Show a sample answer

Use 还是 for a choice question. 左边 means left, 右边 means right. You can also ask (Is it on the left?)

    Take this with you

Remember the location pattern: 在 + gate + 第 + number + 排 + 第 + number + 层. Ask 在哪个货架? and use 左边/右边 for left/right. Repeat the location back to confirm, and use 请问 or 麻烦 to stay polite.
