Clarifying the Parking Zone for a Shared Bike in Mandarin Chinese

Learn to ask whether you can park a shared bike here, name parking spots, service areas and no-parking zones, and understand the phrase 超出范围 when an app refuses your lock.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

When a shared bike will not let you end your ride, the problem is usually location, not the bike. In Mandarin, the fastest fix is to ask a person nearby. This lesson gives you the three location words you will see in the app — 停车点 (parking spot), 运营区 (service area) and 禁停区 (no-parking zone) — plus the question 可以停这里吗 (can I park here?) and the phrase 超出范围 (out of range). You will practise asking a passer-by or a staff member to point you to the nearest legal spot, and you will learn how to read the app's refusal message without guessing. Everything here is about clarifying a zone, not about promising what any company will do.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask whether I may park a shared bike in a specific place.
    • name a parking spot, a service area and a no-parking zone in Mandarin.
    • understand and react to 超出范围 when an app blocks my lock.
    • ask a staff member or passer-by to point me to the nearest parking spot.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    可以停这里吗?

    Can I park here?

    kěyǐ tíng zhèlǐ ma

The default polite question. Point at the exact spot as you say 这里. Works with a passer-by, a security guard or shop staff.

    停车点

    parking spot; designated parking point

    tíngchē diǎn

The marked place where the app expects you to end the ride. Often shown as a pin or a blue zone on the map.

    运营区

    service area; operating area

    yùnyíng qū

The wider area where the service operates. Inside it you may ride; the parking spot is a smaller point within it.

    禁停区

    no-parking zone

    jìntíng qū

An area where you must not leave the bike, such as a narrow pavement or a building entrance. 禁 means forbidden.

    超出范围

out of range; outside the area

    chāochū fànwéi

The message you may see when you try to lock the bike outside the allowed area. It describes the location, not a punishment.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is 可以 + verb + 这里吗, literally 'can (I) verb here?'. With 停 (to park) you get 可以停这里吗? You can swap the place word: 可以停那里吗? (can I park there?), 可以停门口吗? (can I park at the entrance?). To ask where the legal spot is, use 最近的停车点在哪里? (where is the nearest parking spot?). To check the boundary, ask 这里在运营区里面吗? (is this inside the service area?). Notice that Mandarin does not change the verb for 'I' or 'you' here; context and the question word do the work.

    When to use it

Use 可以停这里吗? when you are standing at a spot and a person is nearby. Use 停车点 when you are looking at the app map and want a name for the pin. Use 运营区 when you are unsure whether you have left the whole service area, and 禁停区 when a sign or the app warns you off a specific place. If the app shows 超出范围, do not keep trying to lock; ask 最近的停车点在哪里? and walk there. These are questions about location, so they stay useful even if an app's rules change.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    不好意思,可以停这里吗?

Excuse me, can I park here?bù hǎoyìsi, kěyǐ tíng zhèlǐ ma
    B

    这里不行,这里是禁停区。

Not here, this is a no-parking zone.zhèlǐ bùxíng, zhèlǐ shì jìntíng qū
    A

    那最近的停车点在哪里?

Then where is the nearest parking spot?nà zuìjìn de tíngchē diǎn zài nǎlǐ
    B

    前面路口右转,有一个停车点。

Turn right at the intersection ahead; there is a parking spot.qiánmiàn lùkǒu yòu zhuǎn, yǒu yí ge tíngchē diǎn

A little context goes a long way

With strangers, open with 不好意思 (excuse me) before the question; it softens a direct request and is standard in public. Staff in uniforms, security guards and shop workers are usually the easiest people to ask. Keep the exchange short and concrete: name the object (停车点) and ask for direction. Avoid arguing about rules you cannot verify; if someone says 不行, ask for the nearest spot instead. App wording and zone maps differ by city and company, so treat the screen as the current source and the person as a helper, not an authority on policy.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 我可以停这里? without 吗, or adding an English-style subject change like 你 can park here.

Try this instead: Keep the Mandarin question frame: 可以停这里吗? The 吗 at the end marks the yes/no question, and the subject is normally left out when it is obvious. If you want to be explicit, 我可以停这里吗? is fine, but 你可以停这里吗? asks about the other person, not you.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1You are standing on a pavement and see a small sign with 禁停. Ask a passer-by whether you can park there.

    Show a sample answer

    不好意思,可以停这里吗?

This uses the polite opener plus the core question. 可以停这里吗? is the standard way to ask permission about a place; adding 不好意思 makes it natural with a stranger.

2The app shows 超出范围 when you try to lock the bike. What does it mean, and what should you ask?

    Show a sample answer

It means you are out of range. Ask 最近的停车点在哪里?

超出范围 describes your location as outside the allowed area. Asking for the nearest 停车点 gives you a concrete next step. You could also ask 这里在运营区里面吗? to check the boundary.

3A friend says the whole street is a 停车点. Correct this using the three zone words.

    Show a sample answer

    不对。停车点是一个点,运营区是更大的范围,禁停区不能停。

This separates the three terms: 停车点 is a specific point, 运营区 is the wider service area, and 禁停区 is where parking is forbidden. A street is usually not one single parking point.

    Take this with you

When the bike will not lock, ask a person: 可以停这里吗? If the app says 超出范围, find the nearest 停车点 and check you are still inside the 运营区, away from any 禁停区.
