Expressing Curiosity and Appreciation for Other Cultures in Mandarin Chinese

Learn to say you love learning about other cultures in Mandarin, ask respectful questions, and respond warmly when someone shares a cultural difference.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

In this lesson you will learn how to express genuine curiosity and appreciation for other cultures in Mandarin Chinese. The focus is on positive, inclusive language: saying that you enjoy learning about cultural differences, asking respectful follow-up questions, and responding warmly when someone shares something unfamiliar. You will practise useful patterns such as 对……感兴趣 (duì ... gǎn xìngqù, 'to be interested in ...'), 喜欢了解 (xǐhuan liǎojiě, 'to enjoy learning about ...'), and 听起来很有意思 (tīng qǐlai hěn yǒu yìsi, 'that sounds very interesting'). These phrases help you show appreciation without making assumptions or treating any culture as strange.

    By the end, you can…

    • say that I love learning about other cultures in Mandarin.
    • ask respectful questions about someone's cultural practices.
    • respond positively when someone describes a cultural difference.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    我很喜欢了解不同的文化。

I really enjoy learning about different cultures.

wǒ hěn xǐhuan liǎojiě bùtóng de wénhuà.

A clear, positive statement of interest. Use it when someone asks about your interests or when you want to set a friendly tone in a conversation.

    我对你们的文化很感兴趣。

I am very interested in your culture.

wǒ duì nǐmen de wénhuà hěn gǎn xìngqù.

The pattern 对……感兴趣 (duì ... gǎn xìngqù) is the standard way to say you are interested in something. Use 你们 (nǐmen, plural 'your') when speaking to a group or when referring to a community.

    你能多跟我说说吗?

Could you tell me more about it?

nǐ néng duō gēn wǒ shuōshuo ma?

A polite way to invite someone to share more. The repeated verb 说说 (shuōshuo) softens the request and makes it sound friendly rather than demanding.

    听起来很有意思!

    That sounds really interesting!

    tīng qǐlai hěn yǒu yìsi!

Use this as a warm response when someone describes a custom, festival or tradition. It shows appreciation without judging the practice as odd.

    谢谢你跟我分享。

Thank you for sharing that with me.

    xièxie nǐ gēn wǒ fēnxiǎng.

A simple, sincere way to close a cultural exchange. It works in both casual and slightly formal situations.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 对……感兴趣 (duì ... gǎn xìngqù) means 'to be interested in ...'. Put the topic between 对 and 感兴趣. For example: 我对中国历史很感兴趣 (wǒ duì Zhōngguó lìshǐ hěn gǎn xìngqù, 'I am very interested in Chinese history'). You can also use 喜欢了解 (xǐhuan liǎojiě, 'to enjoy learning about') with a direct object: 我喜欢了解不同地方的饮食习惯 (wǒ xǐhuan liǎojiě bùtóng dìfang de yǐnshí xíguàn, 'I enjoy learning about eating habits in different places'). Both patterns are positive and respectful.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when you meet someone from a different background, when a friend shares a tradition from their family or region, or when you are travelling and want to show genuine curiosity. For example, if a colleague mentions a festival you do not know, you can say 听起来很有意思!你能多跟我说说吗? (tīng qǐlai hěn yǒu yìsi! nǐ néng duō gēn wǒ shuōshuo ma?, 'That sounds interesting! Could you tell me more?'). Avoid saying 很奇怪 (hěn qíguài, 'very strange') about a cultural practice; it can sound judgmental. Instead, use 我以前不知道 (wǒ yǐqián bù zhīdào, 'I didn't know that before') to show you are learning something new.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你对什么文化最感兴趣?

Which culture are you most interested in?nǐ duì shénme wénhuà zuì gǎn xìngqù?
    B

    我很喜欢了解不同的文化,尤其是饮食和节日。

I really enjoy learning about different cultures, especially food and festivals.wǒ hěn xǐhuan liǎojiě bùtóng de wénhuà, yóuqí shì yǐnshí hé jiérì.
    A

    我们家乡有一个特别的节日,你想听吗?

My hometown has a special festival. Would you like to hear about it?wǒmen jiāxiāng yǒu yí gè tèbié de jiérì, nǐ xiǎng tīng ma?
    B

    当然想!听起来很有意思,谢谢你跟我分享。

Of course! That sounds really interesting, thank you for sharing.dāngrán xiǎng! tīng qǐlai hěn yǒu yìsi, xièxie nǐ gēn wǒ fēnxiǎng.

A little context goes a long way

In Mandarin-speaking contexts, showing interest in another person's culture is usually appreciated, but tone matters. Direct questions about money, age, religion or politics can feel intrusive in a first meeting, even if asked with curiosity. Start with broad topics like food, festivals, languages or daily routines. Using 你们的文化 (nǐmen de wénhuà, 'your culture') is fine when speaking to a group, but with an individual it is often better to name the specific place or practice, for example 你们家乡的节日 (nǐmen jiāxiāng de jiérì, 'the festivals in your hometown'). This sounds more personal and less like a generalisation.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 我觉得你们的文化很奇怪 (wǒ juéde nǐmen de wénhuà hěn qíguài, 'I think your culture is very strange') to express surprise.

Try this instead: Use 我以前不知道,听起来很有意思 (wǒ yǐqián bù zhīdào, tīng qǐlai hěn yǒu yìsi, 'I didn't know that before; it sounds very interesting'). This shows you are learning without judging. If you want to express surprise, say 这跟我以前了解的不太一样 (zhè gēn wǒ yǐqián liǎojiě de bú tài yíyàng, 'This is a bit different from what I knew before').

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'I am very interested in your culture' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    我对你们的文化很感兴趣。

This uses the pattern 对……感兴趣 (duì ... gǎn xìngqù). You could also say 我对你们的文化特别感兴趣 (wǒ duì nǐmen de wénhuà tèbié gǎn xìngqù) to mean 'especially interested'.

2A friend describes a festival from their hometown. What is a positive response you can give?

    Show a sample answer

    听起来很有意思!谢谢你跟我分享。

This responds with appreciation and thanks. Other valid responses include 真有趣 (zhēn yǒuqù, 'really interesting') or 我以前不知道 (wǒ yǐqián bù zhīdào, 'I didn't know that before').

3How can you politely ask someone to tell you more about a cultural practice?

    Show a sample answer

    你能多跟我说说吗?

The repeated verb 说说 (shuōshuo) makes the request sound friendly and less demanding. You could also say 可以多讲一点吗? (kěyǐ duō jiǎng yìdiǎn ma?, 'Could you say a bit more?').

    Take this with you

Use 对……感兴趣 and 喜欢了解 to express positive curiosity, respond with 听起来很有意思 to show appreciation, and avoid words like 奇怪 that can sound judgmental. Respectful curiosity builds better conversations.
