Asking About Fish Freshness in Mandarin at a Wet Market

Learn Mandarin phrases to check whether fish is fresh, live, or iced, and to ask how to cook it, using natural wet-market speech.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends talking over coffee in a city café

At a Chinese wet market, the fish stall is where a few precise questions save you from a disappointing dinner. This lesson teaches you to ask about freshness directly, distinguish 活的 (live) from 冰鲜 (iced), and find out whether the fish came in today. You will also learn to ask the seller how to cook it well. The register is casual and practical: short questions, quick answers, no formalities. By the end, you can walk up to a tank or a bed of ice, point, and get the information you need in Mandarin.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask whether a fish is fresh, live, or iced.
    • ask whether the fish arrived today.
    • ask a seller how to cook a fish tasty.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    这鱼新鲜吗?

    Is this fish fresh?

    Zhè yú xīnxiān ma?

A direct, neutral question you can ask about any fish on display.

    是活的还是冰鲜的?

    Is it live or iced?

Shì huó de háishì bīngxiān de?

Use when you cannot tell whether the fish is swimming in a tank or lying on ice.

    今天到的吗?

    Did it arrive today?

    Jīntiān dào de ma?

Asks about arrival day without asking for a guarantee; the seller may answer with a day or a vague reply.

    怎么做好吃?

How should I cook it so it tastes good?

    Zěnme zuò hǎo chī?

A practical request for cooking advice, common at fish stalls.

    帮我挑一条。

    Help me pick one.

    Bāng wǒ tiāo yī tiáo.

Lets the seller choose; useful when you are not confident judging freshness yourself.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 是……还是……? means 'is it A or B?' and is perfect for sorting out fish states. Ask 是活的还是冰鲜的? (Is it live or iced?) and the seller will point to a tank or to the ice. You can swap the second option: 是活的还是冻的? (Is it live or frozen?). For freshness, 新鲜 (fresh) describes the fish itself, while 活的 (live) describes a living fish and 冰鲜 (iced) describes fish kept cold on ice but not frozen. Do not use 新鲜 to mean 'live'; a fish on ice can still be 新鲜.

    When to use it

Use 今天到的吗? when you want to know the arrival day, not a promise. The answer may be 今天早上到的 (arrived this morning) or 昨天的 (yesterday's). If you want cooking advice, ask 怎么做好吃? after choosing the fish. The seller might say 清蒸 (steam it plain) or 红烧 (braise it in soy sauce). These are suggestions, not fixed rules, and they can vary by stall and region. Keep your tone light and friendly; market talk is quick and informal.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    老板,这鱼新鲜吗?

Boss, is this fish fresh?Lǎobǎn, zhè yú xīnxiān ma?
    B

    新鲜,今天早上到的。

Fresh, it arrived this morning.Xīnxiān, jīntiān zǎoshang dào de.
    A

    是活的还是冰鲜的?怎么做好吃?

Is it live or iced? How should I cook it so it tastes good?Shì huó de háishì bīngxiān de? Zěnme zuò hǎo chī?
    B

    冰鲜的,清蒸好吃。

Iced, steaming it tastes good.Bīngxiān de, qīngzhēng hǎo chī.

A little context goes a long way

At wet markets, sellers often use short, direct answers and may not volunteer details. 老板 (boss) is a common friendly address for a stall owner, not a claim about their business. Asking 今天到的吗? is normal, but treat the reply as the seller's statement, not a formal freshness guarantee. Pointing at a specific fish helps avoid confusion when several kinds are displayed.

    One thing to watch for

Using 新鲜 to mean 'live', as in saying 这鱼很新鲜 when you mean the fish is swimming in the tank.

Try this instead: Use 活的 for a live fish and 新鲜 for freshness. For example, ask 是活的吗? (Is it live?) or 这鱼新鲜吗? (Is this fish fresh?). A fish on ice can be 新鲜 but not 活的.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1You see a fish lying on ice and want to know if it is iced rather than live. What do you ask?

    Show a sample answer

    是冰鲜的吗?

This directly asks whether the fish is iced. You could also ask 是活的还是冰鲜的? to offer both options.

2You want to know whether the fish came in today. What do you ask?

    Show a sample answer

    今天到的吗?

This asks about the arrival day. A seller might answer 今天到的 or give another day; the question does not demand a guarantee.

3You have chosen a fish and want cooking advice. What do you ask?

    Show a sample answer

    怎么做好吃?

This asks how to cook it so it tastes good. The seller may suggest 清蒸 or 红烧; these are suggestions, not fixed rules.

    Take this with you

Ask 新鲜吗? for freshness, 活的还是冰鲜的? to tell live from iced, 今天到的吗? for arrival day, and 怎么做好吃? for cooking advice. Keep it short and friendly at the stall.
