How to Ask Where the Tourist Information Center Is in Mandarin Chinese

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

When you arrive in a Chinese-speaking city, one of the most useful questions you can ask is where the tourist information center is. In Mandarin, the key question word is 哪儿 (nǎr), meaning 'where,' and the verb 在 (zài), meaning 'to be located at.' Together, 在哪儿 (zài nǎr) lets you ask about the location of almost anything. In this lesson you will learn to say 旅游信息中心 (lǚyóu xìnxī zhōngxīn) and the shorter, very common 游客中心 (yóukè zhōngxīn). You will also learn what services these centers usually offer, how to ask whether English is spoken, and how to understand a simple answer with 在 (zài) plus a place. No prior grammar is needed beyond basic greetings.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask where the tourist information center is in Mandarin.
    • name common services offered at a tourist information center.
    • ask whether English is spoken there.
    • understand a simple location answer using 在 (zài).

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    旅游信息中心在哪儿?

Where is the tourist information center?

    lǚyóu xìnxī zhōngxīn zài nǎr?

Full, clear form. Use with staff at hotels, stations, or airports. 旅游 (lǚyóu) means travel, 信息 (xìnxī) means information.

    游客中心在哪儿?

    Where is the tourist center?

    yóukè zhōngxīn zài nǎr?

Shorter and very common on signs and in speech. 游客 (yóukè) means tourist or visitor.

    请问,服务中心在哪儿?

Excuse me, where is the service center?

    qǐngwèn, fúwù zhōngxīn zài nǎr?

请问 (qǐngwèn) politely opens a question. 服务中心 (fúwù zhōngxīn) is a general service center, often the same desk.

    这里有地图吗?

Do you have a map here?

    zhèlǐ yǒu dìtú ma?

Use 有 (yǒu) for 'have' and 吗 (ma) to make a yes-or-no question. 地图 (dìtú) means map.

    你会说英语吗?

    Do you speak English?

    nǐ huì shuō Yīngyǔ ma?

会 (huì) means 'can, know how to.' 英语 (Yīngyǔ) means English. Useful when you need help in English. Note that 你 (nǐ) here is the singular 'you'; the plural 'you all' would be 你们 (nǐmen).

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is: Place + 在哪儿? (zài nǎr?). 在 (zài) means 'be located at,' and 哪儿 (nǎr) means 'where.' So 游客中心在哪儿? (yóukè zhōngxīn zài nǎr?) literally means 'tourist center is located where?' The answer often uses 在 (zài) plus a place: 在火车站里面 (zài huǒchēzhàn lǐmiàn) means 'inside the train station.' You can replace 游客中心 with other places: 洗手间在哪儿? (xǐshǒujiān zài nǎr?) means 'Where is the restroom?' 地铁站在哪儿? (dìtiězhàn zài nǎr?) means 'Where is the subway station?' The pattern does not change with the subject, so it is easy to reuse. Note that 哪儿 (nǎr) is the colloquial northern form; in southern China and Taiwan, 哪里 (nǎlǐ) is often used instead, and both are understood everywhere.

    When to use it

Use 请问 (qǐngwèn), meaning 'may I ask,' at the start when speaking to a stranger or staff member. For example, 请问,游客中心在哪儿? (qǐngwèn, yóukè zhōngxīn zài nǎr?) is polite and natural. If you are already inside a station and want the information desk, you can ask 服务中心在哪儿? (fúwù zhōngxīn zài nǎr?). When you need a map or a brochure, ask 有地图吗? (yǒu dìtú ma?). If the answer is too fast, say 请再说一遍 (qǐng zài shuō yí biàn), meaning 'please say it again.' These phrases work in mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore, though the word for information desk may vary by region. In Taiwan, for instance, 旅客服務中心 (lǚkè fúwù zhōngxīn) is common, and traditional characters are used.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    有,还有会说英语的工作人员。

Yes, and there are also staff members who speak English.yǒu, hái yǒu huì shuō Yīngyǔ de gōngzuò rényuán.

A little context goes a long way

In mainland China, 旅游信息中心 (lǚyóu xìnxī zhōngxīn) appears at major stations and scenic areas, while 游客中心 (yóukè zhōngxīn) is common on signs. In Taiwan, you may see 旅客服務中心 (lǚkè fúwù zhōngxīn), written in traditional characters. Staff are usually helpful, but English ability varies. Starting with 请问 (qǐngwèn) and speaking slowly is polite and improves your chance of being understood.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 游客中心在哪里? (yóukè zhōngxīn zài nǎlǐ?) in casual speech and expecting the same tone as 哪儿.

Try this instead: Both 哪儿 (nǎr) and 哪里 (nǎlǐ) mean 'where,' but 哪儿 is more common in northern speech and 哪里 is common in southern and formal speech. A safe, natural question is 游客中心在哪儿? (yóukè zhōngxīn zài nǎr?) or 游客中心在哪里? (yóukè zhōngxīn zài nǎlǐ?). Do not add 是 (shì) before 在: say 游客中心在哪儿?, not 游客中心是在哪儿?.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask 'Where is the tourist information center?' using the full term?

    Show a sample answer

旅游信息中心在哪儿? (lǚyóu xìnxī zhōngxīn zài nǎr?)

This uses the full term 旅游信息中心 plus the location pattern 在哪儿. The shorter 游客中心在哪儿? (yóukè zhōngxīn zài nǎr?) is also correct and very common.

2What does 请问 (qǐngwèn) add to a question?

    Show a sample answer

It makes the question polite, like 'Excuse me' or 'May I ask.'

请问 (qǐngwèn) softens the question when speaking to a stranger. You can also simply say 你好 (nǐ hǎo) first, which is equally acceptable.

3How do you ask 'Do you have a map here?'

    Show a sample answer

    这里有地图吗? (zhèlǐ yǒu dìtú ma?)

有 (yǒu) means 'have,' 地图 (dìtú) means map, and 吗 (ma) turns the statement into a yes-or-no question. 这儿有地图吗? (zhèr yǒu dìtú ma?) is a common northern variant.

    Take this with you

Remember the pattern Place + 在哪儿? (zài nǎr?) to ask where anything is, and start with 请问 (qǐngwèn) for politeness. Use 游客中心 (yóukè zhōngxīn) for the tourist center and 有地图吗? (yǒu dìtú ma?) to ask for a map.
